PHP/Drupal programmer | Lifelong AIDS Alliance

Lifelong AIDS Alliance, the Pacific Northwest’s leading AIDS service organization, is looking for a programmer to update our website (www.llaa.org) and to provide occasional tech support as needed. The first, major project will be to upgrade us from PHP 4/Drupal 4.7.3 to the current versions of each – and to update existing templates and Drupal modules as necessary (from Flexi-node to CCK). Our website is proving unstable in its current configuration, so we are looking for somebody who is also willing to provide ongoing tech support during the code upgrade project and beyond. There is also a strong possibility of future site development work, but that phase of the project is still under internal discussion.

If you have questions, or want to send a resume, please contact us at drupal@llaa.org.

Intern Developer | One Day's Wages

We're an upcoming non-profit that is about 80% ready to go (i.e. we have a themed, drupal 6 installation with quite a bit of functionality). We need someone who can help make the social networking aspect really solid and slick as well as help us integrate CiviCRM contribution module into our donation setup (and of course, hiccups in working out kinks and bugs). Looking for someone interested in an unpaid internship over the summer or someone that kicks ass in Drupal that simply wants to be involved with a non-profit that seeks to utilize human relationships + technology/social media + vision to fight extreme global poverty = create a global grassroots movement.

One Day's Wages is gearing up for a soft beta launch in early July and a full launch in September. We were recently featured in the Puget Sound/Seattle Business Journal:
WOW! DrupalCampLA 2009 - Aug 8-9 - planning wiki - help make drupal great!

First, do this ... block these dates! Aug 8 & 9.

Second, please, please, we will need help, volunteers, and session proposals at all levels.

Third, we still need some more sponsors. We've already had some great verbal commitments, but we're looking to lock 'em down.

Fourth, follow LAdrupal on twitter

Lastly, check back often... this is just a planning wiki, so details are still slushy right now.

what is it? DrupalCampLA is a greater Los Angeles area camp or unconference focused on Drupal open source goodness.

will it be as cool as last year? idk, last year was pretty cool. But maybe you want to get your drupal on before you drop by Drupalcon Paris 2009 or perhaps the economy is keeping you local? Either way, this event will do you good! awesome weather. cheap. fun. plus a laid back LA 'tude. did we mention Drupal?

will it be as big as last year? bigger? OMG, please stop asking that. It will depend on you. This year DrupalCampLA will bring a g33k'n good time with sessions of interest from n00b to l33t! (newbies to elite). Our aim is to have lots of goodness useful to all levels of drupalistos! We need awesome session proposals, and volunteers/friends to help bring everything together and make this sweet.

where is it? The School of Engineering at UC Irvine, stepped up to help. We're excited to take the camp into a campus setting as many schools are adopting Drupal so we see a natural fit as UCI being the venue. What school will be next?! We think the place is gonna be cool. The venue holds a lot of people so we can hold an awesome event! But we still have some costs. How cheap and free depends on us getting sponsors!

where to register? REGISTRATION HASN'T STARTED. For now, block your calendars and start lining up a carpool or bunkmate. August 8-9th, 2009. Irvine, California. United States.

what's in it for sponsors? lots! show the community some love, and you'll get exposure and face-time of course. Plus, tell us what you'd like to get out of helping, and together we can work out the logistics to ensure community knows how much you helped!

how to get involved? step up if you can help. Let us know if you have ideas or you want to be involved. Many other Drupal user groups are helping us on this one: San Diego Drupal, OCPHP/Drupal, Santa Barbara Drupal, High-Desert Drupal, San Francisco Drupal, and others we will list later. We're open to to everyone that wants to help and be involved.

Help With General Tasks

There are several areas that still need help:

<strike>Defining sponsor packages and</strike> soliciting sponsors. Sponsor packages breakdown $100, $250, $500, $1k.

Design Contest: T-Shirts, Banners, Stickers, Pins, etc.

Printing - the above

Soliciting remote presenters, soliciting high quality local presentations

Deciding on any food we may want and then coordinating how that will be purchased/delivered

Looking for "in kind" sponsors who may donate services we need

Something Else

We also need help with
* Something else

If we didn't list it but you really enjoy coordinating that part of events or have good contacts in a field, please let me know.

MANY more details to come. sign up below or contact us directly.

Nicole Bluto - I would love to help with anything needed. I would be able to teach a session or two and for sure help out with an install fest. I can bring copies of wamp, xamp, mamp on flash drives so people don't have to download it. I can get a projector probably if you want too. I would like to see Chris teach another session about Drupal/dreamweaver and the extension he made. Jassen and I could also provide a small sponsorship donation.

Rain Breaw - Definitely there to help out! Will bring my camera and take pictures, too. And to everyone: Nicole (above) and I are going to spearhead a drupalchix track of some sort. We are currently interested in feedback about what might be of interest. I posted to the drupalchix group -- http://groups.drupal.org/node/23188 -- please check out the post and log your thoughts/comments! And if you are interested in helping us organize this, we welcome your help. Thanks!

dougvann (www.dougvann.com) - I am SO wanting to come and present some seriously organized BEGINNER sessions. I will have SandBoxes for each attendee and we'll take a step by step approach to getting started. I have done this at http://www.cmsexpo.net/pre-conf-sessions/354-drupal-kickstart.html and even more so with the recent http://drupalcampwi.com/ last week Over here in Indy, where I lead the local Drupal Users Group, I put on a quarterly Indy Drupal HackFest where I teach the basics of CCK and Views, etc. for the 6/27 HackFest we have ppl coming to Indianapolis from Cincinnati and Columbus just for the training! I would love to either join up with people doing beginner sessions OR take on most of it myself if need be. While I can wax poetic about APIs and MashUps, I find that many Camp attendees REALLY need some basics before sitting in front of Drupal Core Developers and Module Authors.
I don't want to profit from coming to the camp but if my costs could be covered I'd LOVE to pop in [even just for day1] and rock the schnizzle out of the Beginner Sessions! Financial help appreciated! :-)

ChristophWeber (www.dialogconsulting.biz) - Seeing an install fest and beginner sessions already proposed, I'd like to extend those ideas to a site building track similar to what we did at SANDcamp. Let noobs learn Drupal by getting their feet wet, and even better, have them take home a working site built the right way. dougvann is right, many camp attendees REALLY need some basics before sitting in front of Drupal Core Developers and Module Authors.
I'd be happy to help coordinate, and I can contribute a session or two. E.g. "Image Handling with ImageField and ImageCache - Regain Sanity and Control" or maybe one on WYSIWYG. We could use Mike Stewart's virtual box or Doug's SandBox. Installing X|M|WAMP and a few modules from scratch is guaranteed to take more time than planned, and turn off people before you have them hooked on the cool stuff of Drupal. Been there, done that.

John Romine - I'm helping out coordinating the venue at UC Irvine.

Karl Scheirer (http://drupalhigh.onsugar.com) - Happy to do a session and volunteer for things that need to get done during the camp like signups table. Is there a list of suggested topics, or even better, ones that have been requested? It's always hard to come up with something new and interesting.

YOUR_NAME_HERE (optional website link) - please copy this line, paste it below, then customize it for you. add a sentence to a paragraph in this area about how you might be able to help.

25% Off Offer for Open Web Vancouver 2009

We Drupaler's of the Pacific Northwest have been given a special offer for Open Web Vancouver 2009 on June 11/12. The first 10 people using the discount code: DRUPALISTA at registration get 25% off on their ticket.

This is going to a great conference. Not only are Drupal notables like Angie Byron, Karoly Negyesi, and James Walker presenting, there's many presentations relevant to what's happening in the Drupal community. There's presentations on mobile technology, mashups and cloud computing, and Vancouver Drupal's favorite son, Boris Mann, is speaking on semantic web. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention presentations by locals Rick Vugteveen and Djun Kim.

The other big news revolves around the City of Vancouver's Open City initiative. The conference organizers are working with the City of Vancouver IT and City Council to help promote the new Open City initiative. There will be a talk from David Eaves and Councilor Andrea Reimer on this new initiative by the city to open up their data, as well as a workshop on Friday afternoon with City IT Staff to brainstorm on the possibilities.

Conference schedule: http://www.openwebvancouver.ca/schedule
Digital Democracy Non-Profit

Greetings again SEADUG,

Sorry again on not being able to stay for the duration of the last meeting. I will better introduce myself. I became a Drupal user about 1.5 years ago in Minneapolis and worked with several others in the initial creation of Twin Cities Open Circuit, http://www.tcopencircuit.org/ which operates as a tech skill share collective with a heavy focus on Drupal use. My career is much more involved in marketing, particularly SEO and viral marketing. I operated TCSEM back in MN: www.twincitiessem.com

The non-profit I am looking to start will act as an online clearinghouse for the creation of city, county, and state legislation. The web site will allow users to caucus together for the purpose of creating ballot initiatives as well as organize signature gathering campaigns. The site will feature a social network (twitter and FB API integration), multi-user blog, a module that enables users to create their own legislation, a system featuring the google map API that enables users to coordinate signature gathering campaigns, Ubercart for membership dues, and CiviCRM for fundraising and communications capabilities.

My first concern is that someone at the meeting mentioned that a group of people were considering this business plan last year. Has anyone heard anything about this? I emailed the guy Richard Leeds from Neon Gecko and he didn't respond.

Some basic workflow issues regarding the legislative system I can imagine without meditating too deeply seem similar to the phpcollab project management software I've used.

How I imagine the process going is something like this. Some user writes a blog post that resonates with the community. Several people 'rec' the Communique (our brand for blog post(we're going for slightly subversive)) and it is raised to the Rec'd list which is prominently featured on the home page. From here, a good deal of discussion would commence on the post and users would begin to offer legislative solutions for the perceived problem. From here, should a good number of users (an arbitrary number I can determine later) draft a site-wide poll, in which a majority agree that a bill should be created remedy said societal ill, and a Caucus (our brand for groups) is created. Users are forced into 2 caucuses when they register for the web site, which are comprised of their county and city. These smaller caucuses are mostly left to the users in those areas to manage and should be decentralized. Caucusing on a state level can only occur when an issue is polled and passed by a majority (allowing 24 hours until cloture).

From the creation of the state-wide issue caucus, the only users allowed to join the caucus are the users who voted in favor of it, removing any roadblocks from the final bill's passage in the spirit of its original intent. So now we come to the document drafting process. Each issue caucus' chairpersonship is initially offered to the individual who first proposed it, although they can deffer this responsibility to whichever user they choose. Ideally I think I would like to see a system whereby the caucus chair writes the initial legislation and users can offer amendments to it and vote accordingly. When all of the editions have been voted on, then the bill is reviewed by a legislative analyst who will either approve the language as viable or not. If not, the decision goes back to the caucus to either remove the language and pass the bill as is, or quash it. If approved by the analyst, the initiative is complete and is added to the final list of approved bills. This same process would be used to write our org's bylaws.

Our agenda is a time sensitive one. We work mostly in 2 year cycles following the electoral schedule. For example, after November 2008 we would mostly focus on creating legislation. When we reach the same time the following year, we would then utilize an Instant Runoff Poll whereby users would pick their top 3 choices of bills from the list of approved bills. The entire community would determine by this vote which 3 approved bills would comprise our statewide agenda for the following year's election. Only members claiming membership longer than 6 months would be permitted to vote in this one to prevent last-minute malfeasance. These three bills are presented to all state organizations that might wish to endorse and/or participate in the political committee which is required to be established for the organizing and fund-raising required to pass the bill. From here, all community members are required to collect signatures for the 3 bills that passed, regardless of their initial preference.

Each user's home page, similar to Facebook, will have a link for, "my petitions", which link to PDF docs of the signature petition specific to the county the user registered in.

Other potential features of the site could include:

-Q&A similar to the Match system used by OKCupid. This system allows users to create questions which are moderated and included in a list which users can choose to answer or not. When a user runs into people via people search, a %age of how similar the users are is included in the results. A part of me thinks this would increase socialization on the site, which is good, but again, I don't want to encourage people to be negative to someone because they have a low %ago of agreeability.

-Daily Polling is similar to the above module. Users suggest poll questions which are moderated and added to a queue which releases a new poll every day.

-A js chat module similar to FB.

-Events management where users suggest events. A moderator then either confirms or denies the legitimacy of the event and assigns the event a number of members who can volunteer to fill the holes.

I will not be allowing any ideological or partisan caucusing, as this is an experiment in anti-partisanship (vs non or post). Users must also agree to a code of conduct when they join which expressly forbids the use of ideological arguments and rude comments. Any abuse of community rules results in a forfeiture of membership and membership dues.

Currently I am having the logo drawn up by a designer in Yelm. I'm not even considering the front end yet. Right now my priority is the back end, but I'm hesitant to incorporate until I know nobody else is doing this.

I am more than capable of doing all the data entry and monotonous crap work. That said, I will likely need someone to do the PHP and basic layout. My wife is a usability analyst so we will likely conduct usability testing with our friends in the Search marketing community. When I get the logo back I will do some focus groups amongst my Facebook friends to get a sense of how they related to the image. Given that some of this will require original programming, I am confident I can find people in this group that I can assist with advice as well as paid labor.

My other imperative is keeping it local. This is to be Washington made and hosted. If anyone knows of a green host in the area, I would love to know of it.

But I first want to open this up to get your ideas on the project's scope as well as potential criticism for the ideas I've presented. I know every idiot out there believes in their own cause, and I don't want to delude myself so be honest. I can take it, promise.

Again, thanks for your feedback and if anything I will see you at next month's meeting,

Bretton Jones

five tracks connecting people across projects, languages, and backgrounds
to explore how we do our work, and why we participate in open source. The
conference structure is designed to provide developers with an opportunity
to learn from people they might not connect with at other events.

Through this conference, we hope to answer a question: what are the rights
and responsibilities of an open source citizen? As developers, we find
ourselves in many roles; we are users, creators, and leaders. The Open
Source Bridge team believes that our role as open source citizens informs
our work whether we are conscious of it or not. Open Source Bridge is
intended as a call to action to become better citizens, by sharing our
knowledge with each other.

In addition to conference sessions, the conference includes two dedicated “hacker lounge” spaces for attendees to hang out, schedule code sprints, and connect with each other. One will be at the Oregon Convention Center, and one at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower, our official conference hotel.

Outside of the conference, Portland offers many attractions for visiting geeks: Powell’s technical books, dozens of local brewpubs, and large
greenspaces like Forest Park, all accessible by mass transit.

Open Source Bridge is a 100% volunteer-run, non-profit conference. Find out how to get involved at http://opensourcebridge.org/volunteer/.

Webdevelop/ database developer | AltRider

AltRider is a Seattle-based start-up that will provide motorcycle accessories for the Adventure Touring niche. The company will sell in-house designed AltRider branded products not seen in the industry as well as proven products from other manufacturers. At the company launch, the site will contain less than 200 parts but by the 3rd year the capacity need to exceed 2000 parts. The AltRider website will be one of the company’s most important assets, since it will be the portal in which most customers interface with the company. AltRider.com will become a “go to” source, not just for products but community and information for the motorcycle adventure touring market. The website needs to be completed well before company launch in Fall 2009. The target launch date for the site is July 2009. While this document is detailed, if there is any additional information you need; we encourage you to contact us.

Most of AltRider’s target market is usually between the ages of 39 to 52 years old, with an annual income between $60k and $100k. Often the customer rode a dirt bike as child and remembers the fun and wants to attain that carefree feeling again. Some are in search for a sense of adventure. We have identified three profiles:
1. Leader: This person has lots of product and mechanical knowledgeable, while critical a strong brand advocate. This is your “everyday Joe” -- the guy that is easy to talk to and who buys the most product.
2. Follower: The customer that has joined for mainly social reasons and may lack riding skill. These are educated or intellectual men, often retired or in a position that allows them to enjoy their hobby. Most are computer savvy and do utilize forums and blogs.
3. Women: The female market is currently small but growing rapidly and motorcycle manufacturers and others in the industry are now taking notice. These women realize they can take these adventures and become an inspiration for more women to join the community.

The top goals of the website are:
1. To be easy to use for the customer to find products and facts they are looking for. The site should be easier to navigate and “cleaner” than competitors’ sites. A dramatic improvement over the competitors sites is a large part of the success for AltRider:
• Touratech: http://touratech-usa.com
• Wunderlich: http://www.wunderlichamerica.com/
• Twisted Throttle: http://www.twistedthrottle.com/

A good example of motorcycle part relations management can be seen in these sites please note these site do not provide community just good part management:
• Bike Bandit: http://bikebandit.com
• Rocky Mountain ATV: http://www.rockymountainatv.com/home.do

To feature a design that highlights the AltRider brand attributes. (see attached)

To beat out the competition for Search Engine Optimization for commonly searched industry words and comments. (Upon project start, we will provide this list)

To provide a place not only for business, but also for shared industry information. The site should be a place where our customers and riders alike go to find out about interesting rides, news, and blogs.

Very successful, user friendly, and intuitive e-commerce functionality. Features such as building a customer’s “garage” which stores the type of motorcycle owned, demographics and relationship database to auto filter the correct parts that customer would want to view.

Complete integration to the internal database and the customer relationship management program (CRM). The goal is efficient quick order fulfillment and recording customers’ likes and dislikes through their behavior on the site

Website sales/ inventory system requirements
We are looking for a multifunctional site that can handle the entire sales process from website shopping cart to the shipping table.

Sales data management (customer database, product database, product line item/invoices database)
• Our sales agents will be able to log into the website and into the customer’s account, then be able to experience the exact same processes the customer is going through. This will better enable the sales agent to help the customer as well improve the website by identifying where flaws are located.
• This will need to feature sales reporting in multiple configurations: by product, customer, sales through website vs. phone at the customer level.
• The database needs to maintain a minimum of 5 year sales history at the customer level

Inventory module
• Demand forecasting :at least a weighted 3 month average of sales
• Product data: information on shipping (to allow the system to select lowest shipping rates from multiple suppliers), dimensions, burn rate, lead time, history, notes, Pop up flags (i.e. this part does not fit on 2007 model year)
• Receiving and packing to interface with a scanning device

FUNCTION AND CAPABILITY NEEDS
- E-Commerce Functionality: The majority of the company’s sales transactions will take place through the website. All of the product pages need to link to single page check-out. From the single page check out the customer can see cart contents, shipping method, and payment information.
- Back-loading Capabilities: The content will need to be continually added to and updated as new products as well as news comes out. Since the majority of the pages will need this type of functionality, we believe it is best to build the site on this type of platform.
- SEO: The site should appear in the top five Google and other search engine’s results for specific industry key words and phrases. The latest knowledge on SEO should be utilized in the building of the company’s website.
- Look: AltRider has begun the branding process by having a logo, tagline, and brand aspirations. The website should reflect these.

FEATURES
- Impressive Design: Many website designs are not impressive. AltRider’s website should stand out from the competition with a modern, inviting design.
- Newslettter/Opt-in Function: The site should feature a place where both customers and non-customers can opt-in to get emails and newsletters from AltRider as well download past newsletters. Our goal is to create a comprehensive customer distribution list. In order to entice people to join, we will create incentive through multiple benefits such as a “Rides” section of the site where GPS track logs will only be accessible if you have a username and password.
- Blog: The blog will be a place where riders can post their thoughts. All blog posts will be submitted directly to the staff of AltRider (probably by filling out a form that gets emailed to AltRider) for approval prior to posting.

SPECIFICS
- Timeline: Entire site needs to be completed before July 2009
- URL: We have already secured the url: www.altrider.com
- Flash animation: We are hoping to include some Flash animation on some product pages and some rotating images on a few of the pages. The flash animation will be limited by the loading time of only several seconds.

YOUR PROPOSAL TO ALTRIDER
The proposal you send to AltRider no later than May 14, 2009 should include the following information:
- Price to include all possible additional costs
- Payment terms
- Timeline: Include milestones and expectations of AltRider in terms of responses
- Case Studies and/or Samples of Work: This should include the scope of work performed and contact information from the company
- Brief resumes of the people on your team that will be working on this project

Database/Web Admin Project | zgoddess

We have a beta site that is based on Drupal that needs a quick fix.

Objectives:
The website has recently moved from the IP address to the live URL. Since then, users have not been able to log into the site, or leave a message in the "Sir VentALot" flash program.

It would appear that there are site settings that need to be altered to point to the domain name rather than the IP address. Contractor will investigate the site settings and ensure that they are all pointing to the domain name.

Project Description:
Contractor will ensure that all the site settings are pointing to the domain name rather than the IP address. If this does not fix the issue, so users can log in or can leave a message in the Sir VentALot flash program, the problem will be further investigated and an appropriate solution will be implemented.

Longer-term relationship possible but not required.

If interested, please contact: lauren@zgoddess.com

Upcoming Events

Here's a quick list of the upcoming events we discussed at last Thursday's SeaDUG meeting:

LinuxFest Northwest - THIS WEEKEND, April 25 & April 26, Bellingham, WA, http://linuxfestnorthwest.org/ - Includes quite a lot of Drupal programming (talks and Drupal Clinic room on Saturday, Drupal mini-camp/BarCamp on Sunday). And it's free!

BarCamp Seattle - Sat/Sun June 13-14, Seattle, http://barcampseattle.org - Could include Drupal content (BarCamp means anyone who comes can contribute what they want to contribute). Free, I think?

Open Source Bridge - Wed-Fri Jun 17-19, Portland, http://opensourcebridge.org/ - Covers all sorts of open-source software and open-source culture. Not free, but it does have a User Group discount, and SeaDUG also has a single scholarship available (talk to Gregory)

Seattle Drupal Camp - We plan to do this in October or so, hopefully at Adobe. We might have a beginner workshop in September as well.

Did I forget anything?

LinuxFest Northwest - Sign up NOW!

LinuxFest Northwest is coming up soon -- April 25-26 in Bellingham, http://linuxfestnorthwest.org

We are planning to hold a mini-DrupalCamp at LinuxFest -- see http://groups.drupal.org/node/20345 for format.

However, deadlines are approaching! Only a few people (from Vancouver I think?) have signed up to give formal talks on Saturday (Jakob assures me that even though the deadline is past, if you sign up now (4/8), you can still get in). Please do so if you want to give a formal talk on Saturday.

We are also planning to have a "BarCamp" style camp on Sunday, but so far, only a few people have signed up as planning to attend LinuxFest Northwest. If you think you'll be there and are interested in the Sunday BarCamp, please go to http://groups.drupal.org/node/20598 and sign up now. Thanks! We need to know how many to plan for.

Also, we'd like to have a "Drupal Clinic" room at LinuxFest on Saturday. The idea would be that people could drop in with Drupal questions, and experts (meaning you!) would be there to answer the questions.

So, if you would like to staff the Drupal Clinic room for an hour (or two or three) on Saturday, please sign up here (this is a Wiki page). Thanks! Please include your name and a link to your user page on groups.drupal.org or other contact information. Anyone from Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, Portland, or farther afield is welcome to be an "expert".

Sign up to be an "expert" in the Saturday "Drupal Clinic" room

Note: Talks the last few years went 10 - 11, 11-12:30, 1:30-3, and 3-4.

10 AM - 11 AM
1.
2.

11 AM - 12 PM
1.
2.

12 PM - 1 PM

3 PM - 4 PM
2.

Any time that's needed (check back and fill in slots closer to LinuxFest; indicate how many hours)
Drupal book exchanges at meetings

We can generate more interest for the monthly meetings with book exchanges. Members bring Drupal books to the monthly meetings and exchange with one of these methods: Book drawings: The donor holds up the book and explains its significance. Anyone who wants the book draws from a deck of cards. High card gets the book. Book swaps: Two members swap their books at the meeting Book lending: Members lend to other members. If members agreed to make the exchange at meetings that would be another reason to attend. A lending book registry could facilitate the process.

Personalized content for portal site

Hi All,

Let's say I have a site built in drupal that is both producing new content and aggregating content from other sites. I was wondering if there was a module that would then allow someone to somehow choose categories of content that they would like to see.

MySite seemed promising but its d5
Linuxfest Northwest

Linuxfest Northwest 2009 this year will include the efforts of SeaDUG and many Vancouver drupal users. Bellingham is about 1.5hrs north of Seattle, 1 hour south of Vancouver, BC. This year we're expecting between 800-1000 attendees. There are various after parties being held on saturday night. So stick around and enjoy Bellingham! There are some cheap lodging options as well.

We're still planning the events for the drupal rooms reserved. If you have ideas, please comment! While most of the presentation spots have filled, we still have a few spots open. We'll post a list of presentations here as soon as its available. Deadline is April 1st to get presentations in.

In addition to Drupal, linuxfest covers all aspects of open source technology around the northwest and the world. This year, Jon 'Maddog' Hall, executive director of Linux International will be our keynote speaker.

We also need booth hosts. We will have a large 12' booth. Rumor has it there will be some t-shirts to give away ;-)

Why We Have Events

At the March meeting of the Seattle Drupal Users Group, we had a spirited discussion of the reasons we hold events, what we get out of events, and what formats for events fulfill which purposes.

Here's a brief summary -- this is a Wiki page, so feel free to edit.

Types of Events

Here's a list of types of events we have held in the past, or people expressed interest in holding. Note that some events we hold might be combinations of two or more of these types of events.

Monthly meeting - introductions, lightning talks, Q and A, planning other events, review of other events, occasionally longer presentations

Barnraising - meet as a group to build a site for a non-profit, from start to finish

Un-Conference (also known as BarCamp, MiniCamp) - self-organized conference, where people propose sessions/topics on the day of the event, and the expectation is that everyone participates actively

Camp - formal conference, with session schedule arranged and published ahead of time

Workshop - seminar or participatory session on a particular topic, such as an all-day Introduction to Drupal for Beginners

Sprint - Work on core Drupal code, bug fixes, Drupal documentation, or contributed projects (modules, themes, etc.)

FOSS Event - outside event with a Free and Open-Source Software focus, such as LinuxFest Northwest, that we participate in

Motivations for Events

Here are reasons people gave for attending events, what they get out of them, etc.

Build stronger local Drupal community (strengthen connections to existing members, bring in new members)

Build connections to nearby Drupal communities (especially Vancouver, Victoria, Portland)

Get beginners up to speed on Drupal

Learn things other advanced Drupalers know, get exposed to new ideas

Do something good for Drupal (software, documentation)

Do something good for the Seattle community, outside of Drupal people

Matrix

Here's a matrix of which types of events do what for which motivations, as well as their costs in planning, space, and money. Note that some events we hold might be combinations of two or more of the "pure" event types listed here. See definitions above for what the row and column headers mean.

Monthly Meeting

Barnraising

Un-Conference

Camp

Workshop

Sprint

FOSS Event

Our Seattle Drupal Group has decided that instead of holding a Drupal Camp in April, we will instead hold our spring camp at LinuxFest Northwest. That will be held on April 25-26 in Bellingham, http://linuxfestnorthwest.org

We plan to hold an "un-conference", "bar-camp", or whatever else you want to call it (self-organized conference) on the Sunday of LinuxFest. We encourage everyone who knows something about Drupal to come and be ready to particpate. We'll have 3 rooms available, and paper/pens to organize who will go where to talk about what. This format worked really well for us at our mini-camp in February, and we're excited to do it again.

On Saturday, there will be more formal presentations about Drupal. If you would like to present, go to the LinuxFest web site and submit your presentation -- the LinuxFest folks will organize these talks into a schedule. At time of writing, someone is already proposing a talk about images in Drupal, and someone else is giving an introduction to Drupal. All Drupal topics are welcome; the audience at LinuxFest tends to be people who are steeped in open-source technology, but they may not be all that up on Drupal.

We will also have a room available on Saturday as a "Drupal Clinic", where people can come with their Drupal sites they are working on, and ask questions. We are hoping that Drupal experts will be willing to spend an hour or two in that room to answer questions. If you would like to staff that room, please reply here.

We'll probably have a more formal Drupal camp in the fall (October or so).

See you in Bellingham!

DrupalCampPDX Dates

We've picked some tentative dates for the next Portland DrupalCamp: August 22-23, 2009.

So scour your calendars and make sure there aren't any other big tech events that weekend. Obviously any date is going to cause problems for some subset of people but we want to make sure we're not up against another regional DrupalCamp. It'll be close to DrupalCon Paris but hopefully we'll still be able to draw in some other people on the West Coast.

Official Layout Studio Theme

Hi Everyone,

We’ve almost completed the demo and documentation websites for the Layout Studio development theme. This brings us one step closer to having it officially released on drupal.org. Have a look, and please feel free to send me your comments if you see any spelling mistakes or errors.

You can also leave comments on the documentation site.

http://layoutstudiotheme.com

Until we get approved as a Drupal Project, you can download the theme on the documentation site.

Thanks,
Rene

I am forwarding this for a friend of a very good friend. I don't really know anything more about the company than what is here and on their website. As far as I know they are not currently using Drupal, but they are looking for PHP/MySQL expertise, so there should be some crossover in this group.

The company is in Seattle...

CarbonContest.com is building a multi-platform environment to help our users track and reduce their energy consumption while at the same time keeping more money in their wallets and protecting the environment. We have just released v2.0 in beta which includes improved tracking and predictions of user consumption. We now want to hire a full time software architect who can help us take the site “Live” later this year.

-Experienced at programming in X/HTML, PHP and Javascript.
-Must be able to create and modify php classes as well as program using ajaxx.
-Knowledge of MySQL databases and database interactions.
-Ability to code in compliance with W3C web standards.
-Knowledge of how to assure html forms are secure, and safe for database insertion.

Bonus Skills
-Ability to program for other platforms (iPhone, Blackberry, Android, fb & iGoogle)
-An eye (or two) for design.

Meeting on IRC

Did you know the Seattle DUG also has an IRC channel?

check it out at #drupal-seattle (on irc.freenode.net)

There are a couple of us (like heyrocker, japerry, and myself) who are hanging out there daily. We've decided to open a Q&A gathering at 1 pm - 2 pm PST each day. Of course, we are assuming you will ask about Drupal not about the meaning of life. :)

Firefox has a plugin called Chatzilla which will allow you to connect to an IRC channel. That's an easy way to get started. See you there!

Drupal camp site...

At the Mini-Camp yesterday, several people (John, Robert, Josh R, Gregory H, Shawn, and I, and did I forget anyone?) set up a new Drupal 6 web site for Seattle Drupal Camps. I did a little more work on it today (mostly content creation, and a little additional tweaking). You can see the process we went through (including module list) in this wiki: http://groups.drupal.org/node/18879.

I'd also like to extend a big thank you! to those who participated in the all-day session yesterday. You were all a great help, and your time, editing, module downloading, content type creation, and ideas were all greatly appreciated.

The site is at http://seattle.drupal-camp.org/ - there is some content you will not be able to see/use unless you log in. If you would like an account, contact me (user contact form if you link to my user name above) or leave a message here. We currently have account registrations disabled (spam issue, see below).

The site is nearly ready to go. We could use some help and/or answers with the following:

a) Visit the site and see if you have any comments/questions/corrections. Leave comments here, please (or edit if you have permission).

b) Do we have plans for t-shirts for this year's camp? Do you want to just sell last year's t-shirt again? Let me know.

c) If you would like to suggest locations for this or other camps, they can now be entered in as Venue content on the new site (if you have an account, see above).

d) Currently, user registration on the new site is turned off, because we already got spam registrations (they were set to "blocked", so no harm done) in the short time it was enabled yesterday through this morning. So we need to set up some kind of anti-spam for user registrations for the site. Any suggestions? I think Gregory suggested Mollom -- is that enough to block most of the registration spam? I don't think individual moderation is practical, since people will need to register to sign up for the camp, etc.

e) A better theme? If somone wants to volunteer to create a nicer theme, or has one to suggest, leave a comment here. I am having an issue with the current theme (Garland with modified colors), that the main area is too narrow to accomodate data entry forms. It's not gorgeous either, but that is probably OK.

Grantmakers in the Arts, a 501(c)(3) affinity organization for Arts Funders, is seeking a contract Drupal developer to assist in a redesign of the website www.giarts.org.

Experience with Drupal 6 and mySQL and the ability to migrate data from existing systems will be central to this project. Content findability and db usability are project priorities.

A Request for Proposal document detailing the project is attached to this notice. The deadline for proposals is Friday, February 27.

Cheers!
