Views Filters with Exposed Select Lists

Views Filters with Exposed Select Lists

Problem: Long lists in exposed filters require control key + multi-selects which are subject to keyboard errors.

Solution: Convert select lists to scrolled check box items for specific filters (not globally)

Some Possible Approaches:
irc:drupal-support 6/30/2008
[18:30]  http://drupal.org/project/views_checkboxes
[18:31]  I've tried this using phptemplate_form_alter in my template.php
[18:31]  http://drupal.org/node/138374#comment-545078
[18:31] http://drupal.org/node/138374 => Exposed views filter widgets as checkboxes and radio buttons => Form Tweaker, Code, normal, patch (code needs review), 3 IRC mentions
[18:32] I think this does it globally too, but that could be modified
[18:32] <DT> ipwa you can't use hook_form_alter in template.php you'd need to use a module
[18:32] <DT> template.php is for theming
[18:34] <_DT> ipwa I've used views filter block and done a little theming of it yes
[18:35] <DT> ipwa: this one can be useful: http://drupal.org/project/views_filterblock

Other approaches?

Looking for Room Starters on Friday Morning

We have two classrooms that need some setup on Friday morning. It won't take long, but I'm hoping to have two folks who can manage the North Classroom ( rm 105 also called Small) and the South Classroom (rm 111, Large). We need to setup some tables and chairs in both. In addition, the small classroom is the "break" room. Coffee, water, and snacks need to be setup ASAP i.e. before 9:30 when folks are expected to arrive. The small room also needs butcher paper applied to the windows so a projector can be worthwhile. I'm bringing the paper and tape.

Any takers? Don't you feel like bossing people around for just a little bit? Then you can sit back and relax :)

small business site developer | webeddy.com

I'm looking for someone in my time-zone (Seattle) who can develop small business websites for me. I generally use the same modules over and over with some variation for customers. I need someone who can do the installation, tweak the modules and do theme integration or design. Theme integration and design can be done by another person. This can be very flexible. These are the standard elements that I usually include in my websites. I have no preference for which module accomplishes the task, as long as it can be made to look attractive. All the hosting is on my server.

Standard story/post
Drop-down or expandable menus
Calendar
Photo Gallery (mutiple galleries)
Searchable Business Directory/Phone book with categories
Links
Ecommerce (I often use X-cart but not adverse to using Ubercart or whatever drupal implementation)
Testimonials
Products/Services directory without ecommerce
Company roster or employee list

I recently have a request for a multi-site installation for an organization with multiple chapters as well. Each sub-site would have identical features. I have examples of sites that are already completed to show you what kind of work needs to be done.

I need someone who can install these sites quickly (since they are virtually all the same structure) and can take on at least one job per week, or more depending on their capacity. The main thing is speedy completion of each job, and the ability to communicate in real time - like from somewhere in Seattle's morning to Seattle's afternoon :)

Please contact me if you are interested in taking on this type of work.

Lunch 2.0 was originally started in Silicon Valley in 2006 by a few folks looking for a free lunch. They quickly found that there were lots of free lunches to be had, cool people to have them with, and cool companies to check out in the process!! After it gained in popularity a few local Seattleites started to wonder why no one up here was buying the local Seattle geek crowd free lunch.... and the rest is history!!

MeBeam chat module

MeBeam is a free flash video chat service. This module allows randomizing the room name via the cron hook to minimize unwanted traffic / bookmarking etc. Just posting here so local Drupal users find it first.

CCK_Create_Install module

I am looking for some feedback on a module I created recently.
http://drupal.org/project/cck_create_install

On several sites lately I have used cck and views, and usually end up using the cck node types as special node types with supporting modules. The problem is that the cck export module doesn't seem to work very well so it is difficult moving the created cck / taxonomy stuff from the production site to the live site.

CCK_Create_Install solves the problem by generating install code for the cck content type and all of the referenced taxonomy.
It has solved my problems, basically I am just looking for code review / suggestions.

In working with cck and taxonomy I have also run into several wish list for wich I have created patches where applicable like adding view filter support for the email module and hacks when I was pressed for time. Would any body be interested in a cck_taxonomy_checkboxes module/widget for cck_taxonomy_field or a taxonomy_profile / cck taxonomy_profile module?

Drupal Camp Video Team

This year's Seattle Drupal camp is shaping up and the presentation line-up is looking great!

I am heading up an effort to record and share the valuable sessions at Drupal Camp. The goal is to get recordings of the sessions and push to get the video online at or shortly following camp.

This is my call for help with publishing video of sessions.

Here is a list of needs:

Video Equipment - Cameras, Tripods, Tapes, Microphones

Volunteers to help transcode video and publish to our online host

Someone to be in charge of video recording on Saturday, I will not be there

I feel like this is a way for me to help contribute back to the community at large by sharing the knowledge from our camp...
Do you feel the same? If so, get in touch and help make sharing the Drupal Video goodness a reality.

Thanks

Help!  Problem with Views/Taxonomy

We're having a problem where Drupal will intermittently create an invalid SQL query when displaying one our our views. The view has a Taxonomy field displayed in the last column. What's weird is that the view works immediately after we create it - but then breaks spontaneously without anything changing in the view or underlying data.

The SQL query includes a SELECT clause for "term_node_3.name". But, there is no table in our Drupal installation called term_node_3 (there is one called term_node). We found a reference to this table name in view_tablefield. It looks to me that Views is overloading the meaning of the "table" column to append the vocabulary table "vid" of the taxonomy we are displaying. But that is not getting stripped out appropriately.

We have the most up-to-date Views for 5.x on our site. So this bug doesn't seem to be fixed. Does anyone know anything about this - it's kind of driving us crazy to have our site sporadically crash like this.

Thanks!
Mike (and Zach)
StartPad.org

P.S. The view in question is at this URL:

http://startpad.org/services

(you'll need to sign up for a StartPad.org account in order to view it).

Module Development Talk - D5 or D6?

On Friday, May 9, I am giving an a talk about module development at DrupalCamp Vancouver. The first I gave this talk was a month ago for folks who were going to create a Drupal site the next weekend. With CCK and Views still under development for D6, I focused on Drupal 5 and my code snippets were Drupal 5 examples.

For DrupalCamp Vancouver, I'm wondering if I should offer the same talk but with Drupal 6 code snippets. CCK is in alpha and Views is in beta for D6. My guess is it will be another month or two before those modules are ready and when most of us will start new sites on Drupal 6. I like the clarity of choosing one version or the other. I have seen talks that try to compare the two, but they tend to get muddy.

If you were interested or if you are actually going to see my talk :) would you rather see module development focused on Drupal 5 or 6?

module permissions for query?

Hi, can I add any custom functions to a module or, do they need to be registered in the menu system? I have some lookup routines that work fine for admin but are not called for anonymous users. I tried using the _underscore naming and that didn't allow them. template.php is in a different scope or something, nothing from there... Should they get added as menu_tasks? Thanks for any help

Drupal Camp Vancouver

Now that the Drupal presence at LinuxFest Northwest is done (talks all day today!) Drupal Camp Vancouver is coming up in 2 weeks (Fri/Sat May 9/10). http://www.drupalcampvancouver.org/

I took at look at transportation options.
* The folks I talked to at LinuxFest today seemed to think a car would not be necessary once one got to Vancouver. Seems likely.
* The train station is 1.6 km or less from the Friday and Saturday locations of Drupal Camp
* I think the bus station is the same place (not sure).
* Amtrak: Northbound - one train a day is a morning train (7:40 AM arrives 11:35 AM). Express buses run the rest of day; one at 6:30 PM arrives at 10 PM.
* Amtrak: Southbound - train at 6 PM, arriving 10:05 PM.
* Greyhound has buses leaving around 7 PM both directions, arriving around 11 PM.
* Fares are $50-$70 for both options

Here's one hotel option I found on the Yahoo travel site: http://www.budgetpathotel.bc.ca/index.html (definitely budget; very close by the train and venue)

Who's going?

Should I give my talk from the LinuxFest up in Vancouver?

And by the way, register now if you have not already! There are only 16 slots left, and even speakers and volunteers need need to register. CAD$20 only. [5pm update: 7 slots left!]

Seattle DrupalCamp Location and Dates Determined

Finally...we have a location for the dates we want! DrupalCamp will be held at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center this year. Dates are solid for June 27 and 28th. Thanks for hanging in there as we all tried different locations. My one concern with YCAC is wifi access. Gregory and Shawn say they have extra routers they can bring, but I'm looking for someone to help and coordinate network issues. We are renting both classrooms plus the theater which holds 150 people. We can start ramping up PR and coordinating the rest of event now that we have location and dates. Let's get to it. My first thought is...do you we need to have folks register? I think we have plenty of speakers, but should we also promote the event more with a focus on bringing in more experts to give talks? Vancouver is doing both of these on a separate web site: http://drupalcampvancouver.org/. Add comments...your opinion matters.

LinuxFest Northwest - Transportation

Anyone going to LinuxFest Northwest next weekend (Sat/Sun, April 26-27)? Events of interest (see web site for more info):

4 members of SeaDUG are giving Drupal talks at LinuxFest Northwest, all day Saturday

Other talks on Saturday and Sunday on all kinds of open-source software subjects

Raffle - Saturday at 4 PM

Salmon lunch - Saturday at noon

Alternative Energy and Robotics displays going on all day both days

Here are some transportation options:

Free bus - leaves from North Seattle Community College at 8 AM both days, departs Bellingham at 5 PM both days to return, limited space, register now!

Drive by yourself - it's about 90 miles / 1.5 hours from Seattle

nodeaccess trouble

Has anyone been using the nodeaccess module in production? We've got it setup on our site but I'm having trouble getting grants to take.

I don't see what the pattern is but but after 'granting' a user view & edit permission, there's still no 'View| Edit' link.

I tried clearing the menu and other caches. This happens to be a section of the site that anonymous users are denied 'view.'

Are there any other good ways to grant or deny on pages? It seems like the most solid way is to create another node type but we're a little to far along for that. I've also read taxonomy can be hooked for privelages. Any ideas on this module?

Thanks!

Node Import & UID assignment with email address

A new website will help Seattle startups find worksites for rent or lease. Initially, worksite information will be bulk entered with a customized Node Import module. One data import field will be email. A module modification is needed to assign UID with an email lookup. If a UID is not found, a stub user account automatically would be created as node owner. Once a worksite node is imported, an anonymous user, who owns the associated email, could claim ownership with a request for new password.

Anyone who would like to help develop the custom Node Import module, provide technical support, or make suggestions in the comments is very welcome. After Seattle gets going, other cities could be added.

For background information:
http://drupal.org/project/node_import
http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SiteFinder/HomePage
http://groups.google.com/group/shs-SiteFinder?hl=en

The next project meeting is scheduled for April 12.

=====================
Update: April 8 - 3am
Strategy: 1) Import users with email addresses; 2) Import nodes and assign to users with matching email addresses.

With the following code changes to node_import.module:
// $Id: node_import.module,v 1.50.2.3.2.13 2008/03/17 09:05:56 robrechtj Exp $
// Assign the mapped fields to the $node.
foreach ($row as $i => $value) {
if (!empty($match[$i])) {
$fieldname = $match[$i];
$node->$fieldname = $value;
}
//      if ($match[$i] == 'name' && $type == 'node_import') {
//        if (($account = user_load(array('name' => $value))) ||
//            (is_numeric($value) && ($account = user_load(array('uid' => $value))))) {
//          $node->uid = $account->uid;
//          $node->name = $account->name;
//        }
//       else {
//          $errors[] = t('The username %name does not exist.', array('%name' => $node->name));
// start replacement code
if ($fieldname == 'mail' && $type == 'node_import') {
$result = @db_query('SELECT uid FROM {users} WHERE mail = $value');
if (is_numeric($result) && ($account = user_load(array('uid' => $result)))) {
$node->uid = $account->uid;
$node->name = $account->name;
}
else {
$errors[] = t('A userid does not exist for %mail .', array('%mail' => $node->mail));
// end replacement code
}
}
}

=====================================
Update: April 9 - 1am
I opened an issue under node import:
Assign node uid with user email - http://drupal.org/node/244367

Six Hour Startup: SiteFinder

The next Six Hour Startup project is nearly here and it's looking great!!! It's called Project SiteFinder and we want you there! Come and be a part of building a fantastic tool that will help the local startup community (and perhaps beyond!) grow and expand. Also get a chance to learn and work with the cool open source content management system "Drupal" with some of the leading experts.

About Project Site Finder: As your startup outgrows your basement, dining room, or even that great co-working space and you need to find the right place to take your growing business to the next level, where do you turn? Currently it's a pain. But what if there was a community-maintained site where you could search for and find exactly the types of spaces your looking for, a site with commentary, ratings and recommendations about the locations by other like-minded users?

The SiteFinder? project, aims to help you find that great new space, it is a website dedicated to providing a community-maintained, searchable database of space for your new company in the Greater Seattle Area. You can be part of the team that pulls together this website for the Seattle startup community.

This project will be built with the Drupal Content Management System and its associated modules. See http://drupal.org for more. While much of the site's functionality will be achieved through existing modules, we expect that this project will require some additional module development which will be returned to the community.

PHP programmers, CSS theming people, business/product planners and community participants are all needed to make this site sing.

Project SiteFinder schedule:

* 4/6 11:00 am - Drupal 101 Introduction and Tour
* 4/6 1:00 pm - Drupal Module Writing primer
* 4/6 Remaining Time - Site Sprint Planning
* 4/12 12:00 - 6:00 SixHourStartup Site Sprint

Please RSVP by going to http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SiteFinder/RSVP and let us know that you are coming.

Location: http://www.saturdayhouse.org/

Directions: http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/House/SaturdayHouseLocation

For more information, please goto the SiteFinder? project wiki at: http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SiteFinder

And join the Google Group discussion at: http://googlegroups.com/group/shs-SiteFinder

Please bring a laptop, an open mind, and an urge for trying something new, different, and fun.

The fine print: Six Hour Startup is an open event that occurs on the second Saturday of each month. This is a learning experience… any project that occurs is a success, so long as there is something to be learned. Everyone is encouraged to fail early, fail often and have fun.

Anyone who participates will be named in the credits and their name will be on the press release. The source code to the project will be released under the BSD license.

Our website can be located at http://www.sixhourstartup.com
