Improve CiviCRM / views integration

CiviCRM is an open source constituent relationship management system that works very well with Drupal (as well as with Joomla! and stand-alone). Where Drupal concentrates on content management, CiviCRM shines at managing contact interactions. CiviCRM data can be accessed using some existing modules, but it would be great to see more robust support for accessing CiviCRM data using Views.

Views allows relationships between defined between tables in order to allow fields in these related tables to be properly presented in views. I'd like to suggest adding views support to the civicrm module, so that information about CiviCRM contacts who are not Drupal users can be displayed in Views, and so that other information about them including their activities, memberships, events, etc can also be pulled into Drupal views. Some tables that define objects like events and memberships would also need to have Views support created for them.

This is more than a single week of work, obviously. Perhaps a good SoC project could hive off a nice chunk that could provide a model for further work. For example, providing support for contact info and activity history and related tables.

IATS and CiviCRM

IATS is a subsidiary of Ticketmaster that offers an excellent way for non-profits in Canada to get transaction processor services - you don't even need a merchant account, and it's relatively inexpensive. It's a step up from a service like 'canadahelps' because you can integrate it into your site and get the donor data into a CRM automatically, and can also be used for e-commerce (in theory).

Up until now though, there was no plug-in for their service with CiviCRM. I had begun a project to write one about a year ago, and after a long hiatus, just finished one. If you're using CiviCRM 1.7 or above and have an IATS service in Canada, please try it here:

If you're in the US, and want to help out, either take a look at the code and enable the US section, or bug me and I'll send you a US-enabled version for testing. I've been reluctant to have it work out of the box because I don't know anything about US credit card requirements/law, and it seems to be different that Canada (e.g., different required fields).

Hey, Canadians! Internationalization patches for Drupal 6 need review!

Since I know internationalization is a big deal to Canadians, I figured I'd cross-post this to some groups. Please don't kill me, this is important. :) There's very little time to get these patches in before code freeze! (June 1)

The following patches desperately need reviews from people familiar with internationalization of site content. The goal is to get Drupal 6 to have internationalization right in core:

- translation of site settings, content types, user profile fields
and so on by storing translations of their string properties with
the locale infrastructure, enabling import/export and simple editing:

I registered civicrm.ca some time ago because it was available, and have just gotten around to setting up a basic 5.1 install with the links module on the community subdomain with the goal of having a directory of Canadian organization installs of Civicrm.

So - if you are a developer or site administrator of a Canadian organization using civicrm - please add yourself to the directory! I've left the registration open for now, but I'll probably have to moderate it when the new breed of drupal comment spammers discover me.

I'm noticing that the civicanada group (http://groups.drupal.org/civicanada where i'm posting this), which I setup after an ad hoc session on civicrm at the last toronto drupal camp, is pretty defunct. I'm hoping that's due to a lack of leadership on my part rather than a lack of interest in the topic. civimail - ready for prime time?

spiderman did some work last december to test the feasibility of a shared civimail install. Turned out to be harder than planned. But it looks like civicrm 1.4 might be ready for use by mere mortals and there's definitely a need out there for industrial strength targetted mailing engines, so post your experiences here if you succeed in making it work. I'm signed up to get it working with http://www.telecentre.org. Aside from techinical issues, there are also issues of spam and white-listing, shared installs and permissions ... etc.

Here are a few issues related to internationalization and civicrm and a proposed solution, 'civinode':

i18n only acts on nodes
the civicrm code base is not very accessible to drupal developers
civicrm is resource intensive
the civicrm database is very handy as a 'flexinode' kind of repository but that's not the core expertise or goal of civicrm ...

So - my proposal is to write a relatively small drupal module that 'compiles' the required civicrm data into drupal nodes loosely coupled to the corresponding civicrm record. This would allow:

i18n to work (there'd be separate nodes for each language, so you could have translations, e.g. a listing of board members in both english and french)
civicrm wouldn't need to be loaded for simple listing and node display
the code would be more accessible and extensible by drupal developers

I understand that previous versions of civicrm did store the individual records in nodes, but it was decided not to - if anyone out there remembers this discussion and can bring it bear on this proposal it'd be great.

And here are a few concerns:

making sure that the civinode type nodes are appropriately in-sync with the core civicrm data
providing a good admin interface for determining which civicrm records get corresponding civinodes

And another idea - there have been a few requests to integrate the taxonomy system into civicrm - one way to do this would be to automagically correspond civicrm groups with taxonomy terms.
