Improve CiviCRM / views integration

CiviCRM is an open source constituent relationship management system that works very well with Drupal (as well as with Joomla! and stand-alone). Where Drupal concentrates on content management, CiviCRM shines at managing contact interactions. CiviCRM data can be accessed using some existing modules, but it would be great to see more robust support for accessing CiviCRM data using Views.

Views allows relationships between defined between tables in order to allow fields in these related tables to be properly presented in views. I'd like to suggest adding views support to the civicrm module, so that information about CiviCRM contacts who are not Drupal users can be displayed in Views, and so that other information about them including their activities, memberships, events, etc can also be pulled into Drupal views. Some tables that define objects like events and memberships would also need to have Views support created for them.

This is more than a single week of work, obviously. Perhaps a good SoC project could hive off a nice chunk that could provide a model for further work. For example, providing support for contact info and activity history and related tables.

IATS and CiviCRM

IATS is a subsidiary of Ticketmaster that offers an excellent way for non-profits in Canada to get transaction processor services - you don't even need a merchant account, and it's relatively inexpensive. It's a step up from a service like 'canadahelps' because you can integrate it into your site and get the donor data into a CRM automatically, and can also be used for e-commerce (in theory).

Up until now though, there was no plug-in for their service with CiviCRM. I had begun a project to write one about a year ago, and after a long hiatus, just finished one. If you're using CiviCRM 1.7 or above and have an IATS service in Canada, please try it here:

http://homeofficekernel.blogspot.com/2007/12/iats-and-civicrm.html

If you're in the US, and want to help out, either take a look at the code and enable the US section, or bug me and I'll send you a US-enabled version for testing. I've been reluctant to have it work out of the box because I don't know anything about US credit card requirements/law, and it seems to be different that Canada (e.g., different required fields).

Hey, Canadians! Internationalization patches for Drupal 6 need review!

Since I know internationalization is a big deal to Canadians, I figured I'd cross-post this to some groups. Please don't kill me, this is important. :) There's very little time to get these patches in before code freeze! (June 1)

The following patches desperately need reviews from people familiar with internationalization of site content. The goal is to get Drupal 6 to have internationalization right in core:

- translation of site settings, content types, user profile fields
and so on by storing translations of their string properties with
the locale infrastructure, enabling import/export and simple editing:
http://drupal.org/node/141461 (also watch this video:
http://hojtsy.hu/drop/dtvideo.mpeg )

- translation support for nodes by relating nodes together
(and possibly their revisions): http://drupal.org/node/142280

See http://lists.drupal.org/archives/development/2007-05/msg00297.html for the full thread.

We are pleased to announce that CiviCRM 1.7 stable is now available for download.

CiviCRM is the first open source and freely downloadable constituent relationship management solution. CiviCRM is web-based, internationalised, and designed specifically to meet the needs of advocacy, non-profit and non-governmental groups.

What's New in 1.7

The big news for 1.7 is CiviEvent - providing integrated online event registration and management for paid and free events. This release also includes a new "Contact Dashboard", which gives constituents a consolidated view of their subscriptions, contributions, event registrations and more.

Other release highlights include:
* Create and save re-usable email templates (with mail-merge tokens)
* CiviContribute plugins for Authorize.net and Google Checkout
* Use customized versions of templates for any screen
* One-click copying for existing Profiles, Contribution Pages and Events
* Restrict access to selected custom data fields and selected profile screens

..You can read the roadmap release summary here:

... and see a complete listing of ALL (145+) new features, improvements and bug fixes here:
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=3Dhide&re...

Many of the additions and changes in 1.7 were heavily driven by your feedback and requests - and we hope they solve many more of your CRM requirements....

Improved Documentation

We are also excited to introduce new comprehensive documentation for all 1.7 administrative tasks AND a new, updated and integrated FAQ.

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/

The second phase of the documentation project is underway now - covering End-user tasks - and is scheduled for completion in June.

We will also be posting a downloadable PDF of the documentation on our SourceForge Downloads page shortly. This will allow folks to use and distribute an offline version of the documentation.

Download

You can download the 1.7 stable release here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D177914

Tarball filenames include the 1.7 label: "v1.7......tgz"
Be sure and select the correct version for your CMS (Drupal or Joomla) and for the version of PHP running on your server
(PHP 4.x or PHP 5.x).

New Installations

If you are installing CiviCRM from scratch, you can use the manual installation instructions linked below.

Drupal Installation (v1.7):
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence//x/xiw

Joomla / Mambo Installations
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence//x/ixI

Upgrading from 1.6

If you are upgrading an existing 1.6 site (working with a copy of the site-of course), we have provided a database upgrade script. Instructions for upgrading are here:

Drupal Upgrade:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence//x/xSw

Joomla / Mambo Upgrade:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence//x/lxs

Getting and Giving Support

You can now ask for and help provide support on our community forums site:

http://forum.civicrm.org/

Reporting Issues and Bugs

We look forward to getting your feedback on the release. Any bugs should be reported via our bug tracking system (linked on the bottom of every page). You will need to register as a user - this ensures that we can follow-up with you on your bug reports if necessary.

Critical bugs will be fixed for 1.7. Other bugs and issues will generally be pushed to a later release, as we are on a short release cycle for 1.8.

Demo

The demo sites have are now running v1.7, so you can explore the new features:
http://demo.civicrm.org/

Kudos and Thank-yous

Special thanks to the dedicated folks who contributed to this release by testing the alpha and beta revisions =97 and to everyone in the community who provided new ideas, feedback (especially critical feedback), and patches. The beta revisions of 1.7 were much downloaded and used much more extensively then any prior releases - and we believe this has resulted in a significant quality improvement.

Grateful acknowledgements to John Kenyon who designed and is leading the documentation project, and to Judy Hallman who volunteered to rewrite and migrate all the FAQs from our old site.

Kudos to Marshall Newrock and Ideal Solutions LLC (http://www.idealso.com) for contributing the Authorize.net plugin for CiviContribute. it's enormously helpful for the long term success of the CiviCRM "ecosystem" when consulting partners step up and contribute needed functionality!

community.civicrm.ca directory

I registered civicrm.ca some time ago because it was available, and have just gotten around to setting up a basic 5.1 install with the links module on the community subdomain with the goal of having a directory of Canadian organization installs of Civicrm.

So - if you are a developer or site administrator of a Canadian organization using civicrm - please add yourself to the directory! I've left the registration open for now, but I'll probably have to moderate it when the new breed of drupal comment spammers discover me.

Civicrm at DrupalCamp Toronto

I'm planning to organize some Civicrm sessions at the upcoming drupalcamp in toronto http://drupalcamptoronto.org/

I'm noticing that the civicanada group (http://groups.drupal.org/civicanada where i'm posting this), which I setup after an ad hoc session on civicrm at the last toronto drupal camp, is pretty defunct. I'm hoping that's due to a lack of leadership on my part rather than a lack of interest in the topic. In any case, if you're interested in helping out, or have some input into the content of such a session, let me know.

CiviCRM 1.6: A Free and Open Source eCRM Solution

We are pleased to announce the latest release of CiviCRM – version 1.6.

Special thanks to the dedicated folks who contributed to this release by testing the alpha and beta revisions — and to everyone in the community who provided new ideas, feedback (especially critical feedback), and patches.

CiviCRM is the first open source and freely downloadable constituent relationship management solution. CiviCRM is web-based, internationalised, and designed specifically to meet the needs of advocacy, non-profit and non-governmental groups.

New to CiviCRM? Read more at CiviCRM.org

What’s New in 1.6?

This release includes powerful dynamic custom data features, along with an initial set of ‘desktop’ user interface features (using AJAX technology).

Specific highlights include:

Configure custom fields for specific activity types, relationship types, etc.

Find contacts ‘as you type’ (suggestive search)

Show inline help by mousing over help icons (unclutters many screens)

Find contacts created or modified within a date range and/or by a user

Create customized batch update screens

Search open activities

Easier global configuration (most of the civicrm.settings.php file moved to Administer CiviCRM | Global Settings)

CiviMail improvements (new features, upgraded AMaViS)

You can read the roadmap release summary < a href="http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviCRM+v1.6">here

We are happy to announce that our 1.6 Alpha release is now available for preview and testing on our servers. We'd like to get as many folks trying out the new features as possible over the next week. This will help us move quickly to a downloadable Beta release - which is currently scheduled for November 29.

You can login to the sandbox at:

http://sandbox.trunk.civicrm.org

User - demo
Password - demo

Highlights of the release - and things we especially like folks to try out are:
* Ajax-based suggestive search in the Contact Search box (left column)
* Dynamically loaded sections in Advanced Search and Contact View Screens
* Mouseover help in Administer Profiles, Import and other spots (look for the ? icon)
* Progress Bar during the import process

Check out the 1.6 Roadmap for a summary of new features and improvements:

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/CiviCRM+v1.6

If you encounter behavior that is clearly a bug - please file an issue on our issue tracker with specific steps to recreate:

http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM?report=com.atlassian.jira.plug...

If you're not sure whether what you're observing is a bug or a "feature" - please post the issue to the mailing list.

Thanks for supporting the project by spending some time testing and reviewing the release! We'd like to make 1.6 a high quality release, so your help is essential.

Downloadable versions of 1.6 will be available at our download site early next week. This is an alpha release, as such we expect to make a fair number of changes to the code and schema. Please do not use it in production.

civimail - ready for prime time?

spiderman did some work last december to test the feasibility of a shared civimail install. Turned out to be harder than planned. But it looks like civicrm 1.4 might be ready for use by mere mortals and there's definitely a need out there for industrial strength targetted mailing engines, so post your experiences here if you succeed in making it work. I'm signed up to get it working with http://www.telecentre.org. Aside from techinical issues, there are also issues of spam and white-listing, shared installs and permissions ... etc.

"civinode" - civicrm does selective i18n in drupal

look at http://drupal.org/node/56661. I'll contact them to make sure the multi-lingual issues will work - AD

Here are a few issues related to internationalization and civicrm and a proposed solution, 'civinode':

i18n only acts on nodes

the civicrm code base is not very accessible to drupal developers

civicrm is resource intensive

the civicrm database is very handy as a 'flexinode' kind of repository but that's not the core expertise or goal of civicrm ...

So - my proposal is to write a relatively small drupal module that 'compiles' the required civicrm data into drupal nodes loosely coupled to the corresponding civicrm record. This would allow:

i18n to work (there'd be separate nodes for each language, so you could have translations, e.g. a listing of board members in both english and french)

civicrm wouldn't need to be loaded for simple listing and node display

the code would be more accessible and extensible by drupal developers

I understand that previous versions of civicrm did store the individual records in nodes, but it was decided not to - if anyone out there remembers this discussion and can bring it bear on this proposal it'd be great.

And here are a few concerns:

making sure that the civinode type nodes are appropriately in-sync with the core civicrm data

providing a good admin interface for determining which civicrm records get corresponding civinodes

And another idea - there have been a few requests to integrate the taxonomy system into civicrm - one way to do this would be to automagically correspond civicrm groups with taxonomy terms.

Anyone?
