Drupal for Online Consultation?

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking at different technology options to support multiple online public consultations. We have an extensive set of feature requirements - the core of which includes setting up and moderating discussion threads for different topics; various levels of access rights; including background and support materials; and extensive statistical reporting on the discussion activities.

We would probably need to engage a local Ottawa organization to setup and customize Drupal for us, and provide ongoing support.

Please contact me if this sounds feasible and of interest to your organization, and I can provide a full set of feature requirements.

Cheers, Mark

Trying to figure something out, any help would be appreciated

Hiya everyone,

So I'm trying to solve a problem here but I just can't completely wrap my head around the way to do it. Hopefully some of you can provide a solution or new insight that help me out here. I'll do my best to explain what I'm trying to do.

I want to create 3 or 4 custom content types what will act almost like blocks (the client is calling these things "buckets" so for the rest of this post I will as well). They will contain just a small amount of content, with like a call to action or some sidebar type of content to compliments the body of the node being displayed. And, like one would usually do with blocks, they will be displayed in a sidebar region on the page.

What I want is to create a content type for each type of bucket (lets say I have two, a "call to register" bucket and a "contact us" bucket), that way the site maintainer will be able to create as many "contact us" buckets as they want, each with it's own unique content.

That's the easy part and I've got no problem setting all that up. Where I'm getting stuck with now is the following.

Once I've created my "buckets" how do I set it up so that bucket 1 will only display on page 1 and page 6 and bucket 2 will only display on page 3.

What I want is something like the "Page Specific Visibility Settings" that you have with a block, but I don't know how to set that up with a custom content type.

I want to associate these buckets to pages rather than nodes because in some cases they need to be displayed on a page that just displays a single node and in other cases they need to be displayed on a page that renders a view.

Up to now I've just been delivering this content by creating a block for each bucket needed and setting the page specific visibility setting to get it to display on the appropriate pages. This isn't a good long term solution for me though because it makes it "too difficult" for the client to add more buckets when they want to.

I may be trying to tackle this problem from entirely the wrong direction so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Hey, just realized i was posting ideas for next Ottawa meet session openers under the post here for the next session (today). This likely isn't the most public spot here to put this, so just a quick post on main blog to link back to the few presentation ideas i am proposing for the NEXT meet.

Asking questions to the group before going to drupal.org

Hi everyone,

I've been wondering if it was cool with everyone if those of us still in the newb level of Drupal development could post questions we have to the group before posting them to drupal.org. I was buzzing this idea around at the last meetup and people seemed to think it was a good idea but I just wanted to make an official proposal before actually posting questions/issues.

I like the idea of making this group a place where local newbs have an environment to learn from the experience of the more senior members. I know that there are times where I have questions that I can post on .org and eventually get the answer I want but it would probably faster/easier to get that info, or discuss it further with someone local.

Anyway.. thoughts people?

Hopefully I can make it out tomorrow but I've been crazy busy both at work and also at home and though the break would be nice, we'll see if I can afford it. If I don't make it tomorrow have a great meetup everyone!

Next Ottawa Drupal Meetup

There was a great turnout for the last Drupal meetup and we wanted to take this chance to organize another one before summer hits. Like the last gathering, this is going to be an informal session for us to get together in person and share a beer or three and get to know what projects people are working on. Several of people from Ottawa also went to Drupal Camp Toronto, so it will be a good opportunity to discuss some of the sessions that took place there.

Venue: James St Feed Co (although it has a different name now - 390 Bank Street)
http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=390+Bank+Street

Please RSVP if you can make it. There is a growing interest in Ottawa and it is a good opportunity for newbies and guru's to get together and learn from each other.

Please forward this on to anyone who might be interested in attending. If you've got a Drupal site or are just curious about this great CMS then please come on by.

Getting Open Source Logic INto Governments Anniversary Party

Hi folks,

This is by no means a strictly Drupal discussion, but there is a reasonable amount of overlap. Based on our last event (and also the first), it seems that there was considerable interest in networking within the government to make adoption of open source software like Drupal easier.

As we all know Toronto's organizing the next near Drupal Camp. I'm interested in seeing if we can't get a few more folks from Ottawa down to the event. Last year a few folks from OpenConcept were able to attend and we found i to be very useful.

If you are interested in attending register here - hopefully via your own openid account (quite slick thanks to Toronto's James Walker).

Session Meetup Planning Page

There were a lot of ideas about our next gathering, when, where and what format.

If people are interested in presenting about a particular topic relevant to Drupal (a module, theme, project, new-launch, etc.), please sign up below:

[ peter@liquidcms.ca ]
Thanks Mike for getting the ball rolling on this - long overdue.

I like the format that we did tonight - very casual. It was amazing to see so many people, i honestly thought we might have only 4 or 5 people out.

That being said, I also like the idea of how SNTTT runs - a 20-30 min presentation and then q/a, then general networking after that.

Along those lines I'd very interested to see what others are working on in the area - but also, as most of you saw tonight, I do like to talk. I have numerous projects I could discuss covering almost anything Drupal related. Some of the ones that spring to mind are:

my recently released Authentication module (not so much for what it does, but the cool way it does some things that might be useful to others in a wide variety of other module designs)

the RSS feed/caching system used to create content on that "well known record label site that shall remain nameless"

"best practices" for Drupal site development

advanced use of the Views module

or whatever people are interested in

[ thatpatguy@gmail.com ]

I agree with Peter that the SNTT or DemoCamp format of short presentations followed by Q/A and then beer time is a great format for these types of evenings.

As for initial show and tell type presentions I would love to see our first meetings dedicated to maybe some more basic stuff like best practices and discussions of the more popular and powerful modules (like CCK and views for example). For those of us still getting our feet wet I could see these sessions being very valuable, though I appreciate that they could be a bit on the dull side for the more seasoned veterans. And that's my two cents.

There's a critical mass of folks interested in Drupal here in Ottawa that it is time we got together to meet in person and share a beer or two in order to get to know each other a bit better. There are now several of us who have gone to Drupal Cons, although I think just Peter, Charlotte & myself were the only ones in Boston. Others have made it to Drupal Camps. There are some great Drupal shops in town and lots of keen advocates/users.

Venue: James St Feed Co (although it has a different name now - 390 Bank Street)
http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=390+Bank+Street

Please RSVP if this sounds interesting. There is already strong interest from my list of local Drupal contacts.

Please forward this on to anyone who might be interested in attending. If you've got a Drupal site or are just curious about this great CMS then please come on by. This isn't just a gathering of Drupal pro's, just a meetup for folks interested in the world of Drupal.

Montreal DrupalCamp2008

That's right folks, Koumbit.org has decided to host a DrupalCamp in Montreal! While we are still at the very earliest planning phases here, the idea is to hold a 2-3 day open-space style event in Montreal the first weekend of October.

While bigger and better than the small meetups of recent years, it isn' t as crazy as a quarter-million-dollar DrupalCon.

What is open-space? Well, one way to put it is that it'll be whatever we collective make it to be. The other way that I would describe it is to point you towards the wikipedia entry.

We are aiming high here. The event should be oriented around birds of a feather style sessions in a format that allows people to roam from one session to another or to continue working as long as they like on their favorite themes. It should provide real learning opportunities for both developers and users alike and should represent a networking bonanza for Drupal shops, indenpendent developers and existing/potential users. We want to avoid the panelists-in-front-of-audiences format that has become the norm in the bigger events. Oh, and it should be cheap!

So start thinking about what you want to see and do there. I, for one, would to see all the other regional Drupal shops show up in force to create a sort of open-marketplace... I'd like to see people showing off their tools, sites and methods... I'd like to see some coding sessions... I'd like to see people discussing what is and isn't working in the community, both locally and globally... oh and an internet connection that works would be nice too ;-)

Anyway, like I said these are early days. We are starting the planning now to make sure that we have the time to turn this into one of the coolest events in Drupal history.

Next Montreal meetup....

More than ever, the Drupal community is overflowing with interesting stuff to discuss and/or to work on. Come find out what's hot and what's not about Drupal 6, internationalization, new modules, the Drupal association, the Montreal DrupalCamp2008 (oh yeah!) and much more. Depending on how many people show up, we may decide to break out into work groups to help move things forward on multiple fronts.

Anyway, whether you are a newby, a power user or a developer, don't miss this meetup!

BTW, this meetup will be held at the Bande-Passante (@BP: 8655 Saint-Denis, next to métro Crémazie)

BTW, BTW, if you are interested in coming, please sign-up with the button provided below... it'll help us keep track of things.

DurpalCon Caravan

We've just signed up for the Boston Drupalcon in March and thought that it would be way more fun and environmentally friendly to drive down to the event from Ottawa, rather than fly. CO2 matters, even when going to a great open source event, plus it means that I won't need to stand in line to get my passport stamped (at least not this year).

There will be a couple other folks from OpenConcept taking part in the journey I hope, but thought it would be a great excuse to try to get to know other local Drupal keeners on our way down. Sorta like start the conference a day early, finish a day late and get to drive through a great part of the world on the way. If there are others thinking of driving down it would be good to connect before hand. Would be a great way to try to strengthen the community of Drupal enthusiasts in this part of the world.

Would be interesting to know who from Ontario/Quebec will be heading down to the conference, so leave a comment here (even if you aren't planning on driving there).

Government of Canada CLF 2 Theme Available

I've created a theme which adheres fairly closely to Common Look and Feel 2.0. The only significant difference is that the top menu bar, which is force-justified in CLF 2 using fussy percentages for each item, is left-justified in this theme. If you really needed the exact look, you could work around this by doing the menu in plain HTML and swapping it via PHP for bilingual sites. Or if anyone knows how to do this within PHPTemplate, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

There's a readme.txt file packaged with the theme that has important information about what was changed and about what you have to do to set it up properly.

This theme has only had a very quick test with FF and IE 7 (I just threw it together over the last couple of days), but I'm thinking it should work reasonably well, since it basically just gives you whatever is in the CLF 2 templates plus some basic CMS goodness (dynamic 2 and 3 column layouts etc.). It doesn't give you all the different versions of CLF, but if you need some of those variations, you'll be off to a flying start.

I'm a bit hesitant about posting it to the Drupal site since I don't actually have TB approval to go messing with CLF let alone distribute my own version, but if anyone wants a copy you can drop me a line (lee dot hunter at hum dot com).

Drupal Open Market during DrupalCon

Hey folks!

Do you need to build a website? Are you a developer that provides Drupal solutions for clients? Do you represent a Drupal shop that is looking to hire Drupal developers or to establish collaborative relationships with other Drupal shops? If you have answered "yes" to any of these questions, this meetup is for you!

In the world of open source software the name of the game is "coopetition" and Koumbit embraces this concept completely. We therefore invite you to the first Drupal Open Market in Montreal. The goal of this session is to allow:

1) users to find and compare Drupal services providers,
2) for Drupal services providers to meet other Drupal shops to evaluate potential collaboration,
3) for Drupal shops to find developers to hire, and
4) for developers to meet each other, etc.

So I'm thinking Friday, the 21st... how does that sound to you folks? Once we get a few comments, we can pick the date before Monday.

We can't all make it to Barcelona for the DrupalCon so come on down join the party in Montreal!

Hey, Canadians! Internationalization patches for Drupal 6 need review!

Since I know internationalization is a big deal to Canadians, I figured I'd cross-post this to some groups. Please don't kill me, this is important. :) There's very little time to get these patches in before code freeze! (June 1)

The following patches desperately need reviews from people familiar with internationalization of site content. The goal is to get Drupal 6 to have internationalization right in core:

- translation of site settings, content types, user profile fields
and so on by storing translations of their string properties with
the locale infrastructure, enabling import/export and simple editing:
http://drupal.org/node/141461 (also watch this video:
http://hojtsy.hu/drop/dtvideo.mpeg )

- translation support for nodes by relating nodes together
(and possibly their revisions): http://drupal.org/node/142280

See http://lists.drupal.org/archives/development/2007-05/msg00297.html for the full thread.

LiquidCMS - Ottawa based Open Source CMS experts

Hi Patrick, et al,

I just wanted to introduce LiquidCMS – a new Ottawa based Web Design company specializing in Open Sourse CMS (including Drupal, TikiWiki, Zen Cart, phpBB, and others). Hopefully myself and my partner (Marc McDougall) will be regular attendees at GOSLINGs and any Ottawa Drupal events in the future.

Feel free to check out our company site at: www.LiquidCMS.ca

Also, feel free to check out a mock up we have done of a National Research Council, Common Look and Feel, Drupal 4.7 web site. The theme/site we have developed has some neat demo capabilities to show various graphic region options as well as an adjustable menu colour demo. The site is also what I would refer to as FULLY bilingual – by this I am referring to not just bilingual content and menus, but URLs as well. The basis for the CLF demo site was a project (non-Drupal) that I did a few years ago for the National Research Council (http://nrc.allanalog.com).

I guess our next demo site will be targeted at Drupal 5.0 and perhaps CLF 2.0.

Look forward to meeting everyone,

Peter Lindstrom
It's about time for another Montreal meetup...

Howdy folks. I guess that it is about time for us to start planning another Montreal meetup.

As discussed previously, the next one should probably not be limited to Drupal developers. In fact, I'd like to invite anybody interested in Drupal but put a special focus on NGOs, non-profits and advocacy groups using Drupal... but then that's just me. Who would you like to invite?

As for a date... ummm... I dunno, how about the 29th? This would give us time to get the invites out in time for orgs to adjust.

As for a place... ummm... I dunno... any suggestions?

Finally, as usual I will try to secure a small budget for this activity from koumbit.org gang. Of course, your contributions are welcome too.

So, let's get this show on the road :-)

Report from the Montreal Drupal Developers Meetup - July 28th and 29th

Koumbit.org was honoured to host Montreal's first ever Drupal Developers' meetup this last weekend. Having a great tool is only a part of what makes the Drupal community strong. The rest stems from the increasingly vast network of individuals and organisations that are proactively providing each other with technical, logistical, financial and emotional support. While we are still at a relatively early stage in the whole "coopetion" game, there are many reasons to be hopeful and Koumbit is dedicated to helping in any way that it can.

About 10 people got together on Friday night at an IleSansFil.org hotspot in Montreal to discuss some of the big issues floating around in the community before settling down in front of our computers at FACIL's headquarters. The topics covered included:

getting internationalization (i18n) into core,

the future direction of Content Construction Kit (CCK),

the possilibity of incorporating decision-making mechanisms into Organic Groups (og),

the possibility of developing an equivalent to the sifr module without Flash and/or Javascript,

progress on the new default theme,

patch for sanitizing user provided data on input instead of output,

patch for admin option to let users choose password and login immediately,

patch for enabling multiple node_access modules to run simultaneously,

patch for moving signatures from comment module to user.module and adding some features,

a whole lot more that I'm fogetting.

Unfortunately most of Koumbit's own developers were out of town and thus didn't get to meet the renowned Drupal heavy-weights who were in attendance such as moshe, chx, webchick, dopry and jjeff.

We spent the next day at Café L'utopik, another IleSansFil hotspot, working on all kinds of stuff. For some it was a chance to help eachother out with patch reviews etc. For others it was a chance to catch up on their work load in the company of their coworkers. For yet others it was a chance to learn some invaluable tricks from the masters. And for at least one, it was a chance to submit his first "real patches" to the Drupal project. Ultimately, however, the meeting itself probably matters more than the actual tasks tackled. Even if people were to only work on personal contracts as opposed to drupal debugging, these events would still represent an excellent opportunity to reinforce the "coop" side of the "coopetition" equation.

So, after hosting Montreal's first Drupal Meetup in March and now Montreal's first Developer Meetup, what's next?
Well, one thing is for sure, Koumbit will continue to look for every/any opportunity to support cooperation and collaboration within the Drupal community. My guess is that, amoung other things, we'll continue to host events, alternating between developer focussed and non-developer focussed meetups, as we build up to hosting a full fledged DrupalCon in Montreal... next spring/summer perhaps?

Ok, let's do a hack session at the end of July!

My good buddy chx is coming to visit from Hungary at the end of July (the 27th - 31st). Let's show him a good time by doing some kind of hacking session some place in town. Any ideas on good venues, and anyone interested in coming?

How I picture this working is all the Montréal Drupal developer-types all meet at some public place with their laptops and do some pair programming, bug fixing, etc. I don't have the money to sponsor folks, but maybe we could all chip in and get some pizzas, etc.

If you're interested, please DON'T sign up to this event below, but instead go click the "sign up" button on Omar's Montreal Drupal Developers Meetup event.

(P.S. Cross-posting this to the Ottawa group)

OK Ottawa! What Next?

What is your interest, how should we go about developing an Ottawa Drupal community? Plan a few informal get together's, organize the first DrupalCampOttawa...?? Join forces and organize an event in Montreal for the Quebec - Montreal - Ottawa corridor? Go on our own way?

gosling has informal meets at the Black Bear Pub in Ottawa, every Friday, at 16:30 - is that a good idea we could reuse? What time and where?

Government of Canada IM Day 2006 | Web 2.0 "Track"

Last week, the planning committee of the Fall 2006 Government of Canada "Information Management Day" (GC IM Day) met, and we flushed out some ideas on what topics to put on the schedule. In our current planning, one track will have the "Leading" flavour, in the sense of leading change, and that one or two sessions under that track will specifically deal with Web 2.0 implementations in the Government of Canada - existing, proposed and suggested.

IM Day is an event planned by Public Servants for Public Servants, held in Ottawa every Fall. It is very well attended by key individuals in information management throughout federal government. There are chances are that our keynote speaker (not selected yet) will be "web 2.0 enabled" this year...

Do you have an example of Drupal deployed in a governmental setting? Please drop me a line, I'm interested in proposing a session describing the capabilities of Drupal as a Free and Open Source web content management platform that is fully web 2.0 enabled. By then, I hope to have completed the development of a bilingual and Common Look & Feel Drupal distribution, suitable for GC sites.

[cross-posted on G2TT and IMN]
