Ivan of Fast Company has offered space at 7 World Trade Center. The one caveat is that we have to have a list of all attendees by 5pm Monday. It sounds like a good location, but the required list of attendees may not work for everyone. Let me know what you think.
Whether we choose the Fast Company location or not, I would definitely like to have Ivan and his team talk about their Drupal project at one of the meetups.
unless we have no other options, I'm against holding the meetings anywhere that we have to provide a list up-front. both from a privacy perspective and allowing for people to decide to attend at the last minute. I'd also rather not have to go through the grief of having to pass through airport-like security on my way to the meeting.
This is Ivan from FastCompany here. I have been talking with Adam about the restriction. I completely understand that it is an inconvience especially given the nature of these meetups, but it is all I have to offer. There is no airport-style security check, or a database of names saved, the building security merely needs a list of names to understand who they can let in. This is the WTC after all, and like many buildings post 9/11, they just do not let anyone in, especially post 5pm+.
The Fulton St subway is nearby, so many subway lines are a quick walk away.
I assumed that it would be as insane as going to see my accountant who has an office in the Empire State Building. It can take 20 min just to get past the security checkpoint, which is a full airport-style check -- empty pockets, bags through x-ray machines, walk through metal detector, etc.
I'll drop my objections, but I still hate to deny people the ability to decide last minute to show up. How early would the list need to be in?
Most buildings do this and other user groups I have attended left all the names of the group members with security. I understand some people have an issue with that but it does allow all who want to attend to show up. Being new to Drupal and taking over a couple of Drupal sites I do not mind going through security. Just becuase you leave your name with security doesn't nessary mean that you will be able to attend. I am I right about this?

The space sounds great. The meeting room is big, it has a projector, and there should be wifi. Ivan is checking into that. The 360 degree views are also nice plus.
I like the requirement that we get the names a day in advance as it will help me better plan the meetings. Signing up a day in advance is really not that hard and it ensures that everyone at the meeting is a serious Drupaler looking to learn and participate. Members can always sign-up and then not show if you have another commitment.
In terms of privacy, we live in New York City, we don't have any:) MNN also required that I sign-in.
Adam: First Thank you for stepping up the plate and really getting this done in such a short amount of time.
Ivan: Sweet.. Thanks for getting space.
but.........
I'm sorry but I really, really, really don't like the signup requirement. The list has 192 subscribers right now and less than 10% of those participate online. By my estimate over 80% of the people that come to the meetups don't participate online mainly due to a lack of time. Of the remaining 20%, 10% of those are being brought by friends/coworkers hearing about it day of (i.e. no time to signup) leaving on 10% to actual signup.
For Drupalcamp we tried really hard to get everyone to "signup" but there was still about 10% or so of the people that didn't sign up. Its common, understood and taken in stride within the Drupal community (I went to Drupalcon without signing up and I wasn't turned away at the door)
No offense to the glorious space, I'm sure its great but I would much rather go to a bar than have to sign up for a meetup. Some people just can't plan a day in advance and decide the day of.
With that said... I'm going to do my best to be there.. so sign me up. I have buttons for you guys!

Working on a space
I'm working on a space at 42nd and 8th Ave. Not sure if it will come through.
Space on 42nd Street didn't work out
My old employer has expanded into all the empty conference rooms that they used to have. No more space is available.
Starbucks at 39th and 8th is good for meetings
The Starbucks at 39th and 8th has a big upstairs, which is good for meetings.

I might have a space
Might be able to snag a space on Houston, or possibly in TriBeCa. Will update later today.
Also might have a space in TriBeCa
Working through the office bureaucratic red tape right now

7 WTC sounds good
7 WTC would be very convenient for me and some of my coworkers here on Wall Street.
This would be our first Drupal meetup, but after attending the Camp in Brooklyn last weekend, we are very fired up!
only as a last choice

see you tuesday
I guess that being on the political fringe, I'm a bit more paranoid about this sort of thing than most.
Where is the sign up list, or who should we email to get on the list?
7 World Trade it is
I will make another post announcing the details of the July 24th meet-up. I guess we can create a wiki page to generate the list. I'll ask Jacob.
We do love our space
The NY Times has written an article about our space (registration required):
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/13/realestate/commercial/13sqft.html
We are new to the space, but we hope to host similar meetings in the future. I will look into all the specifics more.
Thank you, Lefty
I'm really looking forward to this meetup as I was unable to attend DrupalCamp.
Kudos for securing a venue. We'll accept whatever minor inconveniences are attached unless someone has a better plan.
Even so, I applaud your efforts and your willingness to get the job done!
Thanks...
