Start:
2019-06-13 10:00 - 12:00 America/Los_Angeles
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

We hope you can join us for the next daytime meeting of the Spokane Drupal User Group!

When
Thursday, June 13, 2019, 10 AM to noon
We usually meet on a Thursday morning at a library out in the Spokane Valley area. Log in and join the Spokane Drupal User Group (see sidebar on https://groups.drupal.org/spokane-wa ) to be notified of future meetings, events, and discussions (typically just a few email messages per month).

Note: There was a request from one May attendee to have the meeting on June 20, but there was no Spokane Valley meeting room of any size available on that date at our usual 10AM - 12 PM time frame, so I had to schedule on June 13. Sorry about that! I hope most people can come.

Where
Spokane County Library - Argonne branch, 4322 N Argonne Rd, Millwood. We have outgrown our small space! So we will be in the large meeting room at the library. The door is in the foyer/hallway at the end -- don't go into the library book area.
To be reminded, sign up!
To receive an email reminder closer to the date of the meeting, log in and click the "Sign up" button; log in and click "Cancel signup" at a later time if your schedule changes and you can no longer come. There's no obligation to come if you sign up (but we hope you will!). There's also no obligation to sign up in order to come (it's up to you if you want a reminder or not). However, the meeting could be canceled if the organizer isn't sure anyone is coming.
What
We spend two hours in a question and answer format, with the participants around a table, and a laptop with a projector. Come with questions about a project you're working on, something you've learned that you'd like to share with others, a desire to improve Drupal in some way (documentation, programming, design, marketing etc.), or a desire to help others with their projects and questions. Or just come and listen and observe.
Who
Everyone is welcome -- the only prerequisite is having some interest in Drupal. This group is usually 5-10 friendly people, with experience levels ranging from novice to expert, so you'll fit right in. Because of the size of the group, you will have time to share something you've learned, or get your questions answered, or both!
Need a ride?
If transportation is keeping you from attending, please log in and post a comment here. Our usual attendees come from all around the area: downtown Spokane, South Hill, Mead, Hayden, Spokane Valley, Post Falls, etc. So, we can probably find someone to give you a ride without going too much out of their way.

Comments

Hoping to make it!

I hope to make to at least part of this meeting, unfortunately, at best, I'll be late.

I’ll be there

What we talked about today:

  • Upcoming Events:
    - Pacific Northwest Drupal Summit - Seattle - not until 2020!
    - BADCamp - Oct 2-5 in Berkeley CA https://2019.badcamp.org/
    - There is a calendar for other Drupal events:
    https://groups.drupal.org/events
and for DrupalCon in particular: https://events.drupal.org/ (next one is in Amsterdam)
  • Drupal 9 is coming! It will be pretty much the same as Drupal 8 but without the deprecated core code. Modules/themes should mostly work, and the developers can/should test to verify they are not using deprecated code. For the most part, everything should work.
  • Drupal 7 is going away in about 2 years https://www.drupal.org/psa-2019-02-25 . Also, PHP 5.6 is the last PHP5 version, and it is already at its end of life -- end of life means no security updates. Bad! Some Drupal 7 sites may not run on PHP 7.
  • Composer -- tool for managing PHP dependencies.
    - It can be slow -- it has a lot to do (find all the dependencies, calculate which versions are OK to use, download and install them)
    - It is capable of doing patches -- you will need this package: https://github.com/cweagans/composer-patches -- this tutorial is good: http://www.anexusit.com/blog/how-to-apply-patches-drupal-8-composer
    - Can be used to download Drupal and also contributed modules, and update them
  • Figuring out a new module -- example: Colorbox https://www.drupal.org/project/colorbox
    - On the "Extend" page (admin/modules), you can find your module, expand the accordion to see the information, and there might be a "Configure" link. Also there should be a "Help" link if you have the core Help module enabled.
    - Enable the core Help module, go to admin/help, and look in the Module Overviews list for your module.
    - On the Project page, check to see if there is Documentation linked on the sidebar or in the text of the page
    - Check for a README.txt file in the download.
    - Go to the admin/config (Configuration) page and see if the module is listed. If not, try admin/structure (Structure).
  • Overriding theming (Drupal 8) for views (and other stuff):
    - Create a Twig template with the correct name -- to find the name:
    https://www.drupal.org/docs/8/theming/twig/twig-template-naming-conventions
(Start with the default template for the type of thing you are overriding)
    - Put it into your theme's templates folder
    - Clear the cache
  • Adding summary to a view
    - You can use an Attachment display in a view. It has some settings of which display to attach to, and which position.
    - The attachment can use aggregation to add up numbers, count things, etc.
  • Finding people who are working in web/Drupal/graphics in town:
    - https://www.meetup.com/Build-Guild-Spokane/ - monthly meetings
    - http://www.spokanecreate.org/ - weekly office hours
    - https://startupspokane.com/ - Entrepreneurship incubator
    - Various co-working spaces
    - Starting a business in Washington: http://bls.dor.wa.gov/startbusiness.aspx
