Another Montreal Drupal 5@7

The last Drupal 5@7 (aka "happy hour" for all you non-Montrealers out there) was great and it is about time to do another one. As usual there are tons of great conversations to be had, insights to be gleaned and technical tricks to be learned. Moreover, it is time to start planning for the upcoming Montreal DrupalCamp.

So all we need to do is pick a place I guess. I'd like to propose that we do it at Koumbit's new office. How does that sound? Are there any other suggestions for the time/place/agenda?

How Are You Traveling to Szeged?

Hey guys,

I've finally decided to go to Szeged! But the air fares can vary a lot! The cheapest I found on Kayak for Montreal-Budapest, Aug 26-Sep 1, was $1420 through NWA. If I get to NYC, the price falls to a bit over $1000.

For all you Montrealers attending, what are your strategies in getting there?
Also, are the rooms mentioned in the accommodation page meant to be shared? If so, anyone interested?

Thanks!

So after some discussions we're aiming at meeting up at the bande passante (8655 St-Denis, crémazie metro) this friday at 5-6PM to hook up with the Drupal / Koumbit / Bande Passante folks in a joyful mix to meet the local scene, share experiences and discuss how to better collaborate over the Big Pond.

Sushi nearby (along with the usual pizza and fast food culprits), free first beer for everyone (until we crack our budget!).

Développeur / Web developer (Drupal, LAMP, CSS) | Contract

EN FRANCAIS VERS LE BAS

I've been doing contract work for a Montreal based French-language book publisher for the past two months. They are running Drupal 5.x to maintain a web presence and list their book collections (no e-commerce at the moment). The application is already online, most of the work is done but there are a few feature requests. A solid knowledge of CSS is necessary, as they have a keen eye for details. You also need to be able to read and write in French. A graphic artist provides all the necessary images.

Although I am currently telecommuting they would like someone in or around the Montreal area. Email me at dev /at/ furtivecode.com for additional details.

Close to 200 Druplicons loose on the streets of Montreal :)

Yesterday was the 2nd Journée portes ouvertes Design Montréal. Thanks to Bluesponge, the friendly creative agency we're sharing an office space with, my partner at Whisky Echo Bravo (our new Drupal shop) and I were there! Like many design, architecture or fashion firms in town, Bluesponge opened their doors to anyone interested.

We've setup a corner of the office as a playful learning space about Drupal. No, there was no computer involved nor any Drupal demo, just balloons people could pull to read bits of information about Drupal. Most visitors had not heard about Drupal before, and it was interesting to explain them the advantages of a CMS in general, and of Drupal in particular, and also to make them aware of the brand.

We've given away close to 200 Druplicon pins. Everybody seemed to love the Druplicon!

Montreal DrupalCamp2008

Here are some notes that were quickly thown together regarding the upcoming DrupalCamp to be held in Montreal in October (probably) 2008.

Note that these don't even incorporate all the ideas that were present in the initial post about this event. So while this will always remain a work in progress, right now it doesn't even qualify as a first draft. This is a wiki page... please feel free to edit it.

Montreal DrupalCamp

Nature

less panel oriented than the bigger events

BOF oriented

have some pre-annouced topics but allowing people to add them as we go... that being said, the actual schedule would only be established on the spot

sessions oriented toward mobilising coders around projects (some defined before hand, others to be determined)

demo sessions

be sure to provide "skill level" ratings for sessions

try to make sure that people can be in environments where people can discuss code or not!

may be interesting to allow session organisers to point to other "recommended" sessions

Business fair: help clients find a provider.

Make the event as cheap as possible or even free (ideas: sponsorships, "business" registration fees)

Timing and Duration

2-3 days?

"going from 1 to 2 days is harder than going from 2 to 3"

Scope

We'll aim for about 100 people consisting of users, developers and designers.

Location

There was some discussion of having one big room (e.g. for keynotes and panels) and multiple smaller rooms for the breakout but we might be able to get by with a single really big space

Some space outside is very nice as well (especially, if we decide to do it earlier)

We'll define zones (e.g. with letters) where the breakouts can take place

Having a cool place can attract people

Holding it at the SAT? It's expensive but has a "cool" factor. Need more ideas.

Food

Providing food avoids people breaking out to eat.

From local coop?

Other logistics

projectors

reliable wireless

Outreach

need to establish clear "themes"

want to attract people that aren't already in the community

need to make the "reasons" to come more clear (i.e. that might be why the meetups aren't attracting people)

holding the event at a "cool" place also attracts people

announcing on our HAG list

Funding

Potential sponsors

www.Koumbit.org (1000$?)

TP1? (we don't know them, just heard that they do some Drupal stuff)

www.raincitystudios.com

Drupal Association (they don't give money but they might be able to point us towards resources) ... we should talk to webchick (as community outreach) and umm... the other guy who is responsible for supporting events
(webchick says: Jacob Redding, the Event Coordinator for the Drupal Association, has put together a nice Drupal Camp Organizing Guide with some great tips, and we're also trying to get some sort of "swag kit" put together that we can send to local events like this. Boris Mann (Vancouver) and James Walker (Toronto) also have experience putting on camps and can lend some help/advice if we need it.)

(daveo says: I work with Boris, Jacob and the rest of the Raincity Studios crew and just put on Drupal Camp Vancouver - i am happy to offer any advice, estimated budgets, organizational strategies, etc. as needed - see http://drupalcampvancouver.org for what we brewed up this time with a mix of sponsors and $20 per attendee which included lunch, coffee, beer and bamboo t-shirts - we might be able to rally up a crew to come out as well)

Donations from individuals?
(webchick says: James had the idea of a "suggested donation" of $20 at the door which might be one way to approach this.)
(requiring $20 in advance makes the people show up and not flake out the day-of the event and helps fund things like coffee, snacks etc.)

So who will do the follow-up?

daveo: assign tasks publicly on website including social media wranglers to record, document, liveblog the presentations

Other Ideas

... lots of them to come... please contribute by editing this page.

Montreal DrupalCamp2008

That's right folks, Koumbit.org has decided to host a DrupalCamp in Montreal! While we are still at the very earliest planning phases here, the idea is to hold a 2-3 day open-space style event in Montreal the first weekend of October.

While bigger and better than the small meetups of recent years, it isn' t as crazy as a quarter-million-dollar DrupalCon.

What is open-space? Well, one way to put it is that it'll be whatever we collective make it to be. The other way that I would describe it is to point you towards the wikipedia entry.

We are aiming high here. The event should be oriented around birds of a feather style sessions in a format that allows people to roam from one session to another or to continue working as long as they like on their favorite themes. It should provide real learning opportunities for both developers and users alike and should represent a networking bonanza for Drupal shops, indenpendent developers and existing/potential users. We want to avoid the panelists-in-front-of-audiences format that has become the norm in the bigger events. Oh, and it should be cheap!

So start thinking about what you want to see and do there. I, for one, would to see all the other regional Drupal shops show up in force to create a sort of open-marketplace... I'd like to see people showing off their tools, sites and methods... I'd like to see some coding sessions... I'd like to see people discussing what is and isn't working in the community, both locally and globally... oh and an internet connection that works would be nice too ;-)

Anyway, like I said these are early days. We are starting the planning now to make sure that we have the time to turn this into one of the coolest events in Drupal history.

More than ever, the Drupal community is overflowing with interesting stuff to discuss and/or to work on.
Montreal ad-hoc Meetup: How to contribute

Location: Java U, 5511 Monkland Ave, Montréal
Time: 6:30pm - 9 ish

If you want to learn more about how Drupal development works by actually participating in the process, and you'd like some help getting an environment setup so you can try your hand at patching, CVS, and all that stuff, then stop on by!

This sort of ad-hoc meetup is a follow-up to a talk I did a few months ago at one of the Montreal Girl Geek Dinners about open source, contributing, and all that kind of stuff. Some interest had been expressed in finding out more about contributing to Drupal specifically, so now that I'm home for a few days ;), a couple of us are going to meet up and talk about it. :)

Event Languages

Hi all.

In April, I will be moving to the Cornwall, ON area, and I am considering coming to your meetings, since Montreal is closer to me than Ottawa. Are your meetings generally French or English? I would guess English by the conversation in this group... but I figured I would double check. While I can understand some French, I would suspect that I would miss lots of the information were the entire meeting to be held in that language.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Montreal March Drupal Meetup

Last month we had a great time, meet a few people and discussed amongst other things the schedule for our meetups. We decided to make Friday's meetups in the afternoon, so in April we should meet the 11th at 14h. But February is not over yet, March is waiting for us with DrupalCon in Boston, so we're going to meet right after that, Saturday March 8th from 14h until 17h. Everyone is welcome, of course :)

Next, we have to pick a location. We suggested alternating between Bande-Passante on Fridays and an île sans fil café on Saturdays. Any suggestions? Ananya offered her place but I don't have the details. Hopefully, she'll post here. But we have a few weeks to settle on a place, so let's find a cool spot :)

Montreal February Drupal Meetup

At a recent Koumbit meeting, we came up with a proposition to build a little momentum around Drupal in our beautiful city, by having regular themed meetups once a month, the second Friday (@BP) one month and the second Saturday (@WiFi) the other. This brings us to this Friday, when you're all invited to Bande-Passante (@BP: 8655 Saint-Denis, next to métro Crémazie) from 19h to 22h to talk Drupal. In March, we could meet Saturday the 8th in the afternoon at any Café with wifi (île sans fil map). Leave a comment to suggest a bugfix for the schedule, location or format :)

<del title='feature was removed'>Please RSVP if you're logged in.</del>

Here's what the schedule would look like for the next few months, along with suggested themes (meaning 30 minutes or so of the meetup will be used for a demo, screencast, etc.):

Friday February 8th 19h @BP - screencast : d6 + i18n
Saturday March 8th 13h @WiFi - back from boston drupalcon
Friday April 11th 19h @BP - drupal 6 goodies
Saturday May 10th 13h @WiFi - hostmaster2
Friday June 13th 19h @BP - ...
Saturday July 12th 13h @WiFi - ...
Friday August 8th 19h @BP - ...
Saturday September 13th 13h @WiFi - ...
Friday October 10th 19h @BP - ...
Saturday November 8th 13h @WiFi - ...
Friday December 12th 19h @BP - ...

Drupal Open Market during DrupalCon

Hey folks!

Do you need to build a website? Are you a developer that provides Drupal solutions for clients? Do you represent a Drupal shop that is looking to hire Drupal developers or to establish collaborative relationships with other Drupal shops? If you have answered "yes" to any of these questions, this meetup is for you!

In the world of open source software the name of the game is "coopetition" and Koumbit embraces this concept completely. We therefore invite you to the first Drupal Open Market in Montreal. The goal of this session is to allow:

1) users to find and compare Drupal services providers,
2) for Drupal services providers to meet other Drupal shops to evaluate potential collaboration,
3) for Drupal shops to find developers to hire, and
4) for developers to meet each other, etc.

So I'm thinking Friday, the 21st... how does that sound to you folks? Once we get a few comments, we can pick the date before Monday.

We can't all make it to Barcelona for the DrupalCon so come on down join the party in Montreal!

Meetup in Montreal

Tentative date for the next meetup : June 29.

Probably at some ile-sans-fil hotspot, unless someone comes up with a better place. The agenda is open for now, but that will be just before the freeze, so some last-minute patch testing could come out of this. What would you like to talk about?

Playing with Drupal 6's multilanguage support

Here are some issues that have been identified during today's Montreal Drupal Meetup. This document was written collectively by some of the attendees in a Gobby session (so please don't shoot the messenger! ;-)). A wiki page seemed like the next logical step. Maybe some of these points should be posted in the issue queue (if you do so, it could be nice to edit this page and add the link).

This is not very exhaustive, but for most of us it was a first look at Drupal 6. Great new installer, by the way. Anyone, don't be afraid to try this stuff, it's so easy to install!

Patches that were tested:

Translating nodes

Language switcher block

Dynamic translation (applied, but doesn't do anything at this time)

Usability / User Interface

Once the translation module is activated, it would be nice if a couple of other options could then be set:

First, the Language negotiation settings should move from 'None' to 'Path prefix with language fallback' (the third option), as this seems to be the best option for a true multilingual site. Activating this option also activates the users language setting option. [Issue]

Second, the English language should be given an 'en' path prefix. By default it has none. [Issue]

The help text of /i18n/admin/build/translate should contain a link to /i18n/admin/settings/language

The "Text group" section on /admin/build/translate/import is not user-friendly/comprehensible... perhaps it would be clearer if there were other options.... but as it is I can't figure out what that really means.

Language Switcher block

This block only works when you select either of the two path prefix options in Language negotiation. We didn't test it with the domain prefix options. [Issue]

Node Translation

There is currently no way to see which node is the "source" (maybe it could be shown in /node/*/translate). [Issue]

Looking at what is shown under the Translate tab, there's no clear indication that a translation needs to be updated, even though it can be marked as "updated" in the node edition page. [Issue]

Would be nice: A way to select an existing node as a translation. [Issue]

Custom Content Type Translation

User created "Title field label: " and "Body field label:" not translatable. I understand that user contributed content is not supposed to end up in the localisation table but we do need some way to translate this stuff... otherwise users are forced to created different/analogous content types for each language. Note that the "Name" of the custom content type is entered into the localisation table.

Site Information Translation

Even after applying the dynamic translation patch ... the site infomation doesn't seem to be translatable via the usual method (i.e. enter into using interface in one language... switch interface language and translate the fields)

Contact Form Translation

There is no (visible) way to translate the contact forms.... This is similar to the Site Information translation... Previously this was resolved by adding the 'contact_form_information' to the $conf['i18n_variables'] array.

Language Negotiation

Turning on the "Path prefix with language fallback" on /admin/settings/language/configure breaks the "home" links in breadcrumb:
< front >
is tagged onto the end of the link, making it invalid. [Issue]

Montreal Drupal Meetup

Come join us for some Drupal coding fun in Montreal at <del>L'Utopik</del> today! On the agenda are testing i18n patches for core, and wrap-ups from attendees of DrupalCamp Toronto, and probably some other fun, hacky things. :)

UPDATE: L'Utopik's internet is down, so we're down a block at Cafe Vienne.

800, rue Sainte-Catherine Est (I think, corner of Sainte-Catherine and Saint-Hubert)

Hey, Canadians! Internationalization patches for Drupal 6 need review!

Since I know internationalization is a big deal to Canadians, I figured I'd cross-post this to some groups. Please don't kill me, this is important. :) There's very little time to get these patches in before code freeze! (June 1)

The following patches desperately need reviews from people familiar with internationalization of site content. The goal is to get Drupal 6 to have internationalization right in core:

- translation of site settings, content types, user profile fields
and so on by storing translations of their string properties with
RecentChangesCamp

Hi, folks. I wanted to drop a quick note to all Drupal-folks about an
upcoming conference in Montreal that I'm helping to organize.
Éditer

[fr]

RecentChangesCamp is a world-wide "unconference" for wiki technologists, wiki users and wiki admins. Also invited are people from related technology and community practises, as we look for common ground on community, collaboration, content management and self-organizing behavior. The event is free of charge for all participants.

    http://recentchangescamp.org/

The previous two RecentChangesCamp events in Portland have been
extremely fun and interesting for participants. This will be the first
event in Montreal.

    http://www.rocococamp.info/

It would be great to have some more in depth discussion about the best way(s) to integrate wikis & Drupal -- I know this came up a little at the last meetup and I'd like to hear more!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks/Merci,
Trainer | Not ready yet

Hi,
I'm looking for an experienced Drupal trainer. We have programmers already using PHP but it looks like there's something we don't quite grasp yet about the Drupal oriented mind. We've been fumbling with it for a while now and we need a guide helping us see the light. French speaking would be required.

Thanks

Montreal Drupal Meetup (don't miss this one)

We will be getting together Wednesday, April 4th from 1pm - 5pm @ Bande-Passante for yet another meetup.

The difference this time is that you all have enough forewarning and have no good excuse not to show up. ;-)

The other difference this time is that we will structure the meeting in a "show and tell" format. After all, often one of the hardest things in Drupal is choosing which methodology is the most appropriate for any given task. So we'll discuss the challenges we have faced and the solutions that we have come up with resolve them. So while you still have the option of tooling around with your projects (e.g. the stuff you have to do for work), there will be tons of valuable stuff to learn.

Anyway, I hope to see you all there.

Koumbit is a Montre-based non-profit organization seeking to both empower community groups and to develop a collaborative and participative workplace. Koumbit has been growing steadily for the past two years and we are now looking for workers interested in joining our passionate team. This means that we are looking for people with good collaborative skills, interested in getting involved in non-technical as well as strong technical tasks.

The ideal candidate will gather the following skills and qualities:

capable of assuming and respecting commitments autonomously

adhere to the collective values of the organization which is collectively-managed and serves also as an educational space: transparency, copyleft, self-sufficiency, solidarity, equity/equality and participatory economics

ready to get involved and commit with other workers in an honest and professional attitude

available for full time work is an asset

Drupal experience is an asset

web integration experience (HTML/CSS) is an asset

experience in development of free software and "agile" development techniques is an asset

Koumbit follows worker's coop and participatory economics principles. All workers receive an equal pay and we collaboratively decide the management and the direction of the organization. We general operate by consensual decision-making where all workers have a equal say on decisions. We expect working members to actively and creatively get involved in the construction of the organization.

Conditions

Minimally 25h/week up to 35h/week depending on worker availability

3 month contract with the possibility of renewal

Salary: 21,50$/hour

Drupalcon Barcelona and SQIL overlap

I was reading about the Barcelona Drupalcon which will happen at the end of the Québec Free Software Week (SQIL) and it got me thinking... I poked Omar with the idea, but figured I might as well share it here now and see if there is any interest.

Would some of your be interested in participating and/or organizing a local (smallish) convention, maybe Saturday September 22nd, for those of us who won't make it to Barcelona? We could probably manage some sort of telepresence taking into consideration the 5 hour difference.

It would be a great addition to the SQIL and pretty cool for our local Drupal community I think. So who's with me?

A proposed schedule for the next two months...

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Angie (webchick) the other day and we came up with a few ideas regarding the planning of meetups in Montreal.

The main conclusion was that, given that there seem to be as many people wanting these things to take place on weekends as there are people who would prefer them on week days, we thought that it might be appropriate to alternate between the two. Note that we also thought that it might be nice to alternate the location of the meetups too between the Bande-Passante and other locations... some of which have yet to be identified. Based on the above, I came up with the following proposed schedule for the next couple of months:

** READ THE FULL POST FOR THE UPDATED SCHEDULE **

Wednesday, March 21st (1pm - 5pm) @ L'utopik

Sunday, April 8th (1pm - 5pm) @ Bande-Passante

Wednesday, April 18th (1pm - 5pm) @ (To be determined based on feedback)

Sunday, May 6th (1pm - 5pm) @ (To be determined based on feedback)

Robin (millette) suggested that we could, instead, simply pick a couple of recurring (i.e. easy-to-remember) dates (e.g. 1st and 15th, or 5th and 25th) and just let them fall on whatever days they happen to be. Personally, I'd just assume start with the schedule above.

So what do you folks think?

UPDATED SCHEDULE

Based on webchick's suggestion the days were flipped somewhat, so the updated schedule is:

Sunday, March 18 (1pm - 5pm) @ Bande-Passante - DONE

Wednesday, April 4th (1pm - 5pm) @ Bande-Passante

Sunday, April 22nd (1pm - 5pm) @ L'utopik

Wednesday, May 9th (1pm - 5pm) @ (To be determined based on feedback)

Sunday, May 20th (1pm - 5pm) @ (To be determined based on feedback)

Note that I also set this up so that the sessions held at the Bande-Passante would be during the week since some of us are already there at these times.

New Drupal website for the Québec Free Software Week

We've just launched the new SQIL (Semaine québécoise de l'informatique libre) website in Drupal, migrating from the 2005 WordPress we had. The SQIL 2007 is taking place in September with Software Freedom Day so you all have 6 months to come up and organize interesting activities.

We're also looking for a little help with the site, so if you have experience with multilingual Drupal sites and/or organic groups, don't be shy and let us know, we could use a hand :)

Trellon is Hiring Drupal Gunslingers

Have a strong desire to help great progressive organizations make the world a better place? Looking to work with a fantastic team of Drupal developers and build out some really cutting edge sites? Can you write code better than a thousand monkeys with a million years on their hands?

Trellon is a development shop based in Washington, DC and we are looking for a few good programmers to work with our talented team of Drupal developers on some big projects. We’re offering a 1 – 2 month contract to build out a couple of client sites.

If things work out and we like what we see, this will lead to a full time job offer at the end of the contract. Otherwise, you get to spend your time working on cool custom modules, some really innovative themes and help out a few worthwhile causes all while getting paid a decent salary. And you don’t even have to leave your bedroom to do it!

You need to have:

A strong working knowledge of Drupal.

A decent understanding of mysql.

The ability to work in a Linux environment.

A way to be productive working from home (i.e. high speed internet access, skype, IRC, SSH chops).

A positive attitude and genuine desire to get things done.

Other things we would like to see:

CSS skills.

The ability to develop for CiviCRM.

A demonstrated conceptual understanding of social networking and online communities.

People who know how to have fun.

If you think you fit the bill, send an email to jobs@trellon.com that includes a resume or list of links to past projects along with your name and the best time to talk. We will get in touch with you right away. If you have submitted a resume before and not heard from us, feel free to submit it again.

About Trellon

Trellon, LLC is a DC based political consulting firm specializing in the use of the Internet and New Media to achieve social change.
It's too quiet. ;)

So let's talk about something like setting up like a bi-weekly "everyone be at the same place during time X to time Y" thing, totally informal, but where we could see some friendly faces who don't give you a blank stare when you say "Drupal." ;)

a) Where should we go? L'utopik has kind of a funky hippie vibe, free WiFi, and is pretty spacious. Any other suggestions?

b) What times during the week work best for folks? Wednesday evenings? Sunday afternoons?

Montreal Holiday Hackfest - Un "hackfêtes" à Montréal

Ho ho ho and a hey hey hey!

Are you about to spend the holiday season isolated in front of your computer doing the Drupal work that your boss/client wants you to do? If so, here's your chance to break the isolation and/or to do some of the work you want to do. Some of Montreal's most advanced Drupal developers will be getting together to hack it out on Friday at:

Café Art Java
837, Mont-Royal E.,
Montréal, Québec,
H2J1W9, Canada
514-527-9990

Come one, come all! I mean, after all, how joyous would this season really be without a little Drupal sprinkled in there? :-)

Oyez! Oyez!

Holiday Drupal meetup?

Anybody up for a Drupal meetup between x-mas and the new year? Say... umm... the 28th or 29th?

Unless somebody else has a better idea (and is willing to follow-up on it), I'd simply aim to hold an informal hackfest aimed at bugfixes and/or cool stuff like install profiles, mass hosting, decisions + CCK, etc.

The idea is for this to be fun... this is the holiday season after all?

Any takers? If you are interested, please let us know which of these days would best suit you.

Yours drupally,

Omar

Our company, GeoRouting Technologies, Inc., is looking to become involved
in Drupal development. For the moment, we don't yet understand enough of

More details:
- large conference table
- LCD projector for presentations
- wireless network
Need a Montreal Drupal API Consultant

We are a small Montreal-based company looking to start a Drupal application for
logistics and transportation. We would be in need of a Drupal consultant to

Our aim is to come away with a firm understanding of the Drupal API in order
to write our own modules.

Is anyone interested ?
