Experienced Web Developer | RAFT

RESPONSIBILITIES

Coding: Most of your time will be spent developing code. Our application relies heavily on Drupal and its APIs and toolsets. You will be working on a large Drupal multi-site application that uses over 100 drupal modules and has over 100,000 lines of custom code.

Technical Decisions: All developers are expected to contribute in the decision making process to help drive the direction of development for our application. You will be expected to make and suggest decisions regarding your code and others.

Cooperating: We are a team environment, and cooperation and communication are a must. You will be working with other developers, and testers. You will be expected to be well versed with what others are doing and be available to divert your efforts to help others when the need arises.

Growing: Last but not least, we expect you to move up. We are a young company with a small workforce. The lines of responsibility are often blurred, and all of our staff are encouraged to try things that may be outside their normal areas of expertise.

REQUIREMENTS

Strong understanding of web application technology and relational databases

Strong knowledge of PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, AJAX, and other web technologies.

Experience writing highly efficient code within highly scalable, highly available environments

Ideally, applicants will have a history of contributions on drupal.org or other open source community/user group websites.

Knowledge of the core Drupal development APIs, along with knowledge of other common add-on APIs such as Views, CCK, and OG.

Telecommuting is OK, but we prefer candidates able to work in either our New Hampshire office or in the San Francisco area.

Applicants must have a very strong work ethic and be willing to keep up with a fast paced, Rapid Application Development environment. As a startup company we rely heavily on the dependability and initiative of our employees to get work done under sometimes aggressive deadlines. The work is challenging and rewarding. Ideal candidates will be outspoken when it comes to expressing ideas and will be able to give and accept constructive criticism well. A good sense of humor is also required.

ABOUT US

RAFT is a small but growing startup company that specializes in providing tools for use in scientific laboratory research, primarily in academic institutions. Our main product is a full scale end-to-end application that uses the Drupal CMS to enable our user community to better manage their compliance and research needs. We have been using Drupal for three years and hope to become a player in the Drupal community.

Competitive compensation + equity in a well positioned startup.

Please contact jobs@bioraft.com if interested, and view our other opportunities online.

Western Mass Drupal Meetup - August 5, 2008 @ 6:00 pm

The next Western Mass Drupal Meetup will be on Tuesday, August 5.

Great meeting last night, including Walter's presentation on ECommerce and Drupal (Ubercart recommended) and David's presentation on Pubcookie. Thanks again to David Hamilton for hosting the meeting.

Location: Amherst College campus, Webster 102 (see comment from David below for more detail.)

Please suggest agenda items for the next meeting by posting comments below.

Check back here later for updates.

AGENDA (in process):

Overview access control modules - which to use when? - General Discussion

A look at template files - Rick Hood

What IDE do you use and why? Textmate, BBEdit, Dreamweaver, etc... - General Discussion

SEO and Drupal - Josh Cohen

UPDATE (8/6/08): See read more link below for meeting notes.

Great meeting. A little light on attendance but I realize that may be my fault as I should send out a reminder. Will do next time.

Some brief notes on things discussed:

Access Control Modules:

http://drupal.org/project/private - very basic per-node access control.
http://drupal.org/project/content_access - many more options - perhaps the best one.
http://drupal.org/project/og - Organic Groups has its own access control.

Be careful as generally cannot use more than one access control module at same time - conflicts.

Template Files:

http://drupal.org/theme-guide/5 - for Drupal 5
http://drupal.org/phptemplate - all about PHPTemplate theme engine
http://drupal.org/node/104316 - different page templates by path
http://drupal.org/theme-guide - for Drupal 6

All of above is in the handbook:
http://drupal.org/handbooks

IDEs

Eclipse, Dreamweaver and various text editors all mentioned.

During discussion, topic of version control came up: Subversion, CVS, etc. Good topic for nest meeting.

SEO and Drupal

Listen to this Podcast:

http://www.volacci.com/category/sprydev-seo-podcast

especially episode #6.

Tells you almost everything you need to know.

Note: David said he had a problem where allowing free-tagging really messed up Google search results, as Google really grabbed onto the tags and showed results it really shouldn't (because of user created free tagging). So he disabled free tagging.

Other ideas for next meeting:

Innovative ways of using CCK and Views.

Intro to Drupal 6

Reviewing a case study covering how we're using drupal at Amherst will provide insight into what we're up to, as will looking over our summer project list.

Amherst is located in the beautiful Connecticut River valley in Western Massachusetts, just miles down the road from Northampton.
Western Mass Drupal Meetup - June 3, 2008 @ 6:00 pm

Following the first Tuesday of the month timing we have been doing, then next Western Mass Drupal Meetup will be on Tuesday, June 3.

That was a great meeting this past Tuesday. Many thanks to Jim Skowyra for arranging the room again!

Thanks to David Hamilton this meeting will be hosted at Amherst College campus, Webster 102. For more see David's comment below.

Also, we have been informal in the past but I think an agenda would be good with as many presentations as possible, so comment below if you have something to present. It can be small and "newbie" so anything is cool. I think at the last meeting we did presentations that would have been over heads of newbies so want to maybe balance that with some basic stuff too. A step by step of Imagecache Module use is an example.

Check back here later for more details.

Thanks, Rick Hood

UPDATE:

agenda so far:

Using the Audio Module - Jim Skowyra

Building an image gallery using CCK, Views, Imagecache, Thickbox and Custom pagers (http://drupal.org/node/144725) - Rick Hood

Making custom page and views templates - Dan

The Innerfade module (http://drupal.org/project/innerfade) - tentative - Dan

Scrapbook page

Thanks for a good meeting last week. I appreciate all the information you have to offer.

I have a question about how to get started on a project.

I'm going to add some functionality which allows someone to post a certain kind of content. This is just a scrapbook of a home improvement project. This would be for any registered user to use. They could put up one to five photos, a title, and a small summary. Then other users would be able to comment on the project. There would be a list page of projects with titles and the first photo and part of the description. A page to read the entry, view the photos, and comment, and a page to post a new entry.

This would be my first actual Drupal project besides what's usually installed, so I'm wondering if you could suggest where I'd start.

Thanks,

-dave

What about a DrupalCamp New England?

Feeling a little bit of a post-Drupalcon lull and mulling over travel plans to next weekend's DrupalCampNYC4, I found myself wishing that there was something a little bit closer to home to look forward to going to occasionally.

In case anyone isn't already familiar... DrupalCamp is based on the BarCamp format which is an impromptu participant led free conference, usually one or two days long. At the beginning of the day, attendees sign up for sessions they'd like to lead and/or make suggestions of a session they'd like to see so that someone else can take the lead. Discussion and attendant participation encouraged. The event is to be free (usually you can find companies to sponsor whatever expenses are involved, like pizza for lunch) Lots of coding, lots of learning and lots of socializing inevitably takes place.

I figured it would be a question worth posing to all of the groups in the New England area... Would having a DrupalCamp somewhere in our area be something that we'd like to see happen? If so, where in the greater New England area would we be willing to travel to? (It would be my personal assumption that Boston would probably be most central....)

March 2008 Gathering

On Tuesday, March 11, we have the Quebec Room at the Lord Jeffery Inn, Amherst (30 Boltwood Ave) from 6-9pm.

Sorry I won't be able to attend this one. A slip on the ice Superbowl Sunday resulted in a knee injury which keeps me immobile until mid-March. Otherwise, the room is set.

I can start setting these up for the first Tuesday of the month. That means the next one would be April 1st.

Also, I tried creating this as an event - got an inactive spam filter error. Anyone run into this problem?

The position involves creating and maintaining a variety of Drupal sites as a more interactive complement to our existing content.
Our parents’ site, FamilyEducation.com, offers engaging content in areas such as education, learning, activities, family entertainment, health, and nutrition to help parents find the answers they need to raise thriving, healthy children.

We've started using Drupal to make our sites more responsive and interactive. We need a good Drupal developer to take us further. If you have:

Good communication skills, especially with non-technical people;

Then we're looking for you to join our small group of smart, committed developers.

Well it was small, 4 people but concidering the impromptu nature that was good.
I learned more about search hooks, and that all the freelancers in the area are overwhemed w/ bussiness.

Web Developer (telecommute, flex schedule) | Snowtide Informatics

We are a very small software company (check us out at http://snowtide.com) in Western Massachusetts in need of a work-from-home web developer / sysadmin.

The projects on tap include:

* complete the (in-progress) transition of our main public site to Drupal 5
* eliminate existing wordpress installation, migrating all content to Drupal
* design-and-build or find-and-setup some development collaboration and sales-support Drupal modules (think Trac + Salesforce)
* deploy and maintain all of the above to on our public web servers

Why work from home? We all telecommute here (and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future), so we need you to do the same. And yes, this comes with the ability to set your own schedule, within some reasonable bounds. FYI, we'd be glad to work with a current student, given sufficient experience and availability.

A good candidate should have:

* Drupal 5.x / PHP 5 / mysql expertise
* Good HTML / CSS / Javascript skills
* Experience in creating and modifying drupal templates and modules
* Linux (generally Red Hat) system administration experience

This will start as an consulting arrangement, but could certainly grow into a full-time position depending on the amount of work going forward and what "extras" you can bring to the table.

Contact:
Chas Emerick
Snowtide Informatics
Local Drupal developers?

Are there any local, advanced Drupal developers who might be looking for freelance work?

I install and configure Drupal installations on a weekly basis, but I'm not a module developer. It would be great if I could find someone with advanced Drupal skills who would be available for collaborating or subcontracting on bigger Drupal projects when they come along.

Skills needed:
* advanced module development (with efficient code that won't slow down high-traffic sites)
* advanced theming

I don't have any specific projects yet, but if I know there is someone I could call on, I could go after the bigger projects when they come along instead of turning them down.

Looking for someone local to the Pioneer Valley.

Please send me a private message through my contact form if interested.

This position is located in New York City. We will pay relocation expenses for the right candidate.

Inc.com and FastCompany.com, two of the fastest-growing and most prominent business web sites in the U.S., have a position open on their technology staff. We are looking for a senior candidate who has extensive experience with the Drupal content management platform.

We are currently working closely with Lullabot and other major players in the Drupal community to build large scale social networks for our websites. Initially, this position will be responsible for working closely with Lullabot and our web development team to build the first release of this software. Ultimately you will function as our lead developer on this platform following that release.

THIS IS A FULLTIME DEVELOPER POSITION ONLY. FREELANCERS, PART-TIMERS, AND THEMERS NEED NOT APPLY.

Inc.com and FastCompany.com are part of Mansueto Digital, a division of Mansueto Ventures, a growing company focused on four core initiatives: recruit and retain top talent; invest in our properties; practice open book management; and diversify editorial content in our consumer magazines, online and through our Events and Business Resources Group. We are a company that values our customers and employees equally and we are committed to helping them manage and improve the quality of their lives everyday.

Any meetings on the horizon?

I was glad to find a western Mass. group, and was curious as to whether there are any upcoming meetings in the works... or better perhaps to wait until the fall?

Hope everyone is having a good summer!

Western Mass Drupal Meetup #2

OK we are set for Monday, November 6 at 9:00am here: http://www.mediaed.org/ It is a great space with projector and screen.

We have the room until 12:00pm if we want to go that long. There is a coffee shop in the same building.

Suggested topics:

I can do a presentation about what I know about theming (the basics) and then people who know more can take it from there.

Maybe Tim can teach us about how modules work? Hook function and all that jazz? Maybe look at example.module? (http://drupal.org/node/292)

Also, extra bonus: that night in Cambridge there is a Boston Users Group that’s going to be a great meeting. Check it out: http://groups.drupal.org/boston4 Jeff Robbins from Lullabot.com will be there. If you want to drive in together, let me know.

Could be a really great Drupal Day!

However, they are completely booked up, except for weekends.

Here is the calendar: http://www.mef.tv/webcalendar/month.php?&year=2006&month=11

Is anyone up for a weekend meeting, like Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon or Sunday afternoon?

If so, please let us know your preference and if any dates are not good.

OR anyone know another location where some kind of screen is available so we can all watch what people might want to present?

9/22/06 NOTE: Date changed, it used to be October 5.

Haymarket Cafe (downstairs)
185 Main St
Northampton, MA 01060
(413) 586-9969

How about as an agenda we each talk briefly about:

What we know about Drupal and might be able to give a presentation on later.

What we don’t know about Drupal and want to learn about.

We can get into these topics and also use it as the basis for figuring out presentations that might be done at future meetings.

Western Mass Drupal Web Sites

I'm starting work on a new not-for-profit Drupal site on the side called WesternMassBuyLocal.org. There are a few "buy local" sites out there already, but I have some new ideas that I would like to try with this one. (Update: just created a national site on the same subject called http://www.buylocal.net/ -- live, but still in development. Also building related site http://www.pioneervalley.org/ in Drupal.)

I see a lot of box stores moving into the area, and local businesses that have been around for 20 years are closing down. When people type in things like "[product] store amherst" into Google, I want them to come up with information about local businesses and to not end up at one of the "box stores". We also have a lot of CSA here and it would be good if more people learned about how they can buy locally-grown produce direct from the farms.

Another project that I would like to start on in the next few months is a multi-blog Drupal site about the 2008 presidential election (USA). The idea is that the voices of a large number of regional (national?) bloggers would be able to get higher search engine rankings and a louder voice than if they were just blogging independently. A multi-blog project would get more coverage than a single blog.

Just some ideas that I am working on. I have the domain names ready, but haven't installed Drupal on them yet...

Western Mass meeting?

Is anyone interested in meeting in Amherst/Northampton area to talk about Drupal? I'd be interested to see what other people are doing with it.

I've been using Drupal for about 9 months and am interested in learning how to create custom modules. I would be glad to help out any new Drupal users install Drupal and get started with it...
