If you presented and have a slide deck, please post a link to it in the comments of the session node on seattle.drupal-camp.org.

xdebug

I finally got xdebug working in Quanta. I have been messing with this off and on since the last meeting. There is very little documentation for xdebug in quanta so I wasn't really even sure it would work. After much struggle it turns out that it does. For kubuntu the installation is really quite simple. If anyone else is using Quanta and would like more information let me know. Thanks kanani for the demonstration xdebug is very helpful.

CCK_Create_Install module

I am looking for some feedback on a module I created recently.
http://drupal.org/project/cck_create_install

On several sites lately I have used cck and views, and usually end up using the cck node types as special node types with supporting modules. The problem is that the cck export module doesn't seem to work very well so it is difficult moving the created cck / taxonomy stuff from the production site to the live site.

CCK_Create_Install solves the problem by generating install code for the cck content type and all of the referenced taxonomy.
It has solved my problems, basically I am just looking for code review / suggestions.

In working with cck and taxonomy I have also run into several wish list for wich I have created patches where applicable like adding view filter support for the email module and hacks when I was pressed for time. Would any body be interested in a cck_taxonomy_checkboxes module/widget for cck_taxonomy_field or a taxonomy_profile / cck taxonomy_profile module?

Six Hour Startup: SiteFinder

The next Six Hour Startup project is nearly here and it's looking great!!! It's called Project SiteFinder and we want you there! Come and be a part of building a fantastic tool that will help the local startup community (and perhaps beyond!) grow and expand. Also get a chance to learn and work with the cool open source content management system "Drupal" with some of the leading experts.

About Project Site Finder: As your startup outgrows your basement, dining room, or even that great co-working space and you need to find the right place to take your growing business to the next level, where do you turn? Currently it's a pain. But what if there was a community-maintained site where you could search for and find exactly the types of spaces your looking for, a site with commentary, ratings and recommendations about the locations by other like-minded users?

The SiteFinder? project, aims to help you find that great new space, it is a website dedicated to providing a community-maintained, searchable database of space for your new company in the Greater Seattle Area. You can be part of the team that pulls together this website for the Seattle startup community.

This project will be built with the Drupal Content Management System and its associated modules. See http://drupal.org for more. While much of the site's functionality will be achieved through existing modules, we expect that this project will require some additional module development which will be returned to the community.

PHP programmers, CSS theming people, business/product planners and community participants are all needed to make this site sing.

Project SiteFinder schedule:

* 4/6 11:00 am - Drupal 101 Introduction and Tour
* 4/6 1:00 pm - Drupal Module Writing primer
* 4/6 Remaining Time - Site Sprint Planning
* 4/12 12:00 - 6:00 SixHourStartup Site Sprint

Please RSVP by going to http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SiteFinder/RSVP and let us know that you are coming.

Location: http://www.saturdayhouse.org/

Directions: http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/House/SaturdayHouseLocation

For more information, please goto the SiteFinder? project wiki at: http://www.communitywiki.org/odd/SiteFinder

And join the Google Group discussion at: http://googlegroups.com/group/shs-SiteFinder

Please bring a laptop, an open mind, and an urge for trying something new, different, and fun.

The fine print: Six Hour Startup is an open event that occurs on the second Saturday of each month. This is a learning experience… any project that occurs is a success, so long as there is something to be learned. Everyone is encouraged to fail early, fail often and have fun.

Anyone who participates will be named in the credits and their name will be on the press release. The source code to the project will be released under the BSD license.

Our website can be located at http://www.sixhourstartup.com

Pleasant greetings fellow Taco-mans ...

I just discovered this group this morning from the post on the Seattle group. Like the intro says ... I hate "battling the I-5 herds" , so haven't made it to any Drupal meetings since DrupalCon in Portland in 2005 (or was it 2004).

LinuxFest Northwest Planning Wiki

LinuxFest Northwest is happening on the weekend of April 26-27, 2008, 10 AM to 5 PM both days, in Bellingham. In spite of its name, it's intended to be an open-source festival, not just Linux.

At the March SeaDUG meeting, we discussed how to get a Drupal presence going at LinuxFest Northwest. This Wiki page (feel free to edit) is for planning how to do that.

There are 3 main ways for us to get involved with LinuxFest. The sign-up deadline of April 1st has passed now! Several people are giving talks, but we didn't get enough interest for a booth, so we do not have one.

Attend

Who is attending? Which days? Where are you staying?

Jennifer - plan to attend both days and stay over night; I just made a reservation at the Travelodge, 101 North Samish Way, (360) 733-8280, $60 per night (plus tax). Carpool anyone? I could take up to 3 other people in my relatively small but fairly comfortable 4-door hatchback (plenty of room for luggage). I live in south Shoreline (near 145th & Aurora).

By the way, there is a shuttle bus from North Seattle Community College available.

Talks
We can give talks about Drupal at LinuxFest. Here are some ideas (some of which came from the SeaDUG March meeting):

Angus Pratt is already signed up for "0 to 60mph - 5 page Corporate Website In 45 Minutes", which will be an introduction to creating a business web site in Drupal. Since I'm still creating this presentation I would be happy to tailor it to whatever might fit as a more general introduction to Drupal. (Note to Jakob: I would be happy to see Drupal added to the title I just don't quite know who to ask to do that.)

Jennifer Hodgdon signed up to give "Custom Content Types for Drupal Web Sites" (CCK and Views overview)

David Hazel Drupal GOTCHA'S - Hardening and Optimizing your Drupal site. With a strong community and robust core, Drupal, an open source content management platform, is a solid foundation on which to build your website, whether it be community or corporate. The community has contributed almost 3500 (3472), this can be a bit overwhelming for someone trying to put up a Drupal site that is fast and secure. This talk will cover some of the easiest, and most important things you can do to improve the performance and security of your site.

Ubercart - Jakob

Booth
As a non-commercial exhibitor, we can get a free (small) booth at LinuxFest with an Internet connection. If we do that, for maximum effect, we would need to have someone sitting at the booth for the whole festival. If we want to do this, we need to have people sign up to staff the booth for the following shifts:
a) Saturday 9:30 AM (set-up) to noon
b) Saturday noon - 3 PM
c) Saturday 3 PM - 5:30 PM (stow monitors, cables, etc.)
d) Sunday 9:30 AM (setup) to noon
e) Sunday noon - 3 PM
f) Sunday 3 PM - 5:30 PM (cleanup)

Who would like to sign up? If we get 6 people signed up, then we can figure out what to display. Sign up here (include which shift(s) you would be willing to do:

Definitely willing to staff booth:
1. Jennifer - one session, any time/date
2. [[http://groups.drupal.org/user/7909 |Angus Pratt]]
3. Andrew Becherer - One Sunday session that does not conflict with my speaking schedule.
4. David Hazel - One Session that does not conflict with my speaking or volunteer schedule.
5.
6.

Maybe willing to staff booth:
1. Bram Wessel - Not sure yet if I can get away that weekend, but if I do go, I can man the booth for a shift or two.
2.
3.

Note: Not enough people signed up to staff the booth, so we are not having one!

Booth Ideas for next year:

Drupal Camp promotion

Show/tell what Drupal does

List Drupal talks happening at LinuxFest

Area Drupal user groups to get involved with

Pass out promotional materials from those staffing the both, for the whole festival

Jakob said he might be able to supply a nice big monitor

We were also offered a room to hosting a Drupal Track. The idea would be to have scheduled talks, and then more informal workshops when presentations aren't going on. Maybe next year, if we have enough interest - the organizers of LinuxFest were open to the idea, but we didn't feel like we had enough people to staff a room for the whole fest, if we couldn't even staff a booth.

Download, extracting, installing modules through the drupal front end

Seemed to recall a conversation about three months back about using the front end in drupal to download/install modules
I did some searches and can't find anything relevant. I'm putting the workflow below, if someone knows of a module, let me know, otherwise I'll write one

these steps are all done through the front end in drupal
1. enter url of module.tar.gz file(or other compressed file type) you want to install
2. select installation directory (i.e. in the sites/all/themes, sites/default/themes, sites/all/modules, sites/mycoolsite/modules)
3. click submit

on the back end module does this
1. uses curl/wget to download appropriate file
2. executes tar xvfz filename (or other appropriate extraction) to unzip the file

of course you'll need appropriate drupal permissions to access the module, and drupal will need permissions to execute the appropriate binaries on the server

thanks for the help
-Dave

SeaDUG at Seattle times

Start:
2008-01-16 18:00 US/Pacific - 2008-01-16 20:00 US/Pacific

Get ready for a doozy of a DUG. The Seattle Times is going to give us some insight into their conversion of NW Source to Drupal! This is really an exciting event, and I hope all of you can attend. It's going to be a good time of course. The presentation, sponsored by The Seattle Times, will give a general overview of converting to Drupal, then we will breakout into groups on theming, code/development, and admin/cck/etc.
Details

Date and Time: January 16th, 6pm

Location:

Seattle Times
1120 John St. (corner of Fairview and John)
Fairview Auditorium

It's not far from our usual meeting spot at Espresso Vivace.

Really this DUG is for more than Drupal enthusiasts. Anyone in the Puget Sound area might be interested in a large organization like The Seattle Times and how they managed this type of conversion for a large site like nwsource.com. Recommend this one to friends!

dww visit to tacoma/seattle area?

I might be coming to Tacoma sometime in February, and was wondering if anyone would be interested in trying to throw together a Drupal meetup of some sort while I'm in town. The dates aren't fixed yet, but I just thought I'd throw it out there to see if there's any interest.

Also, anyone have any leads on a place to crash while I'm in town?

The main part of my trip is to support a close friend who's been wrongfully accused as part of the Green Scare, and her trial is going on in Tacoma at that time. http://www.supportbriana.org for more about her plight. She's looking to rent/sublet a place for the month for herself, her husband, and their small child. Sorry to spam the groups about this, but anyone who can help her will immediately get major dww-loves-you points. ;) Just let me know if you've got any leads.

Thanks!

Drupal, winner of the Overall 2007 Open Source CMS Award for Best Open Source CMS, supports a variety of websites ranging from personal weblogs to large community-driven websites. We will spend the day migrating a static website into a dynamic Drupal website for a local non-profit. Multiple teams working on different aspects of the site (installation, configuration and theming) will build simultaneously to develop the new site. This project will not only help move a local non-profit with a new website, but demonstrate how to build a Drupal site.

Agenda

11:00-11:30 Introductions, project goals, Drupal review
Nov TacDUG Meeting Saturday November 17th, 2007 12:30 UW Tacoma Cherry Parkes rm 105

Another joint taclug/tacdug meeting this month to bootstrap the tacoma drupal users group.
I'll be in Virginia for Thanksgiving but there's still alot going on.

The next Taclug meeting is Saturday November 17th, 2007 (third
Saturday of the month) at 12:30 PM. The main topic will be Linux
virtualization. The location of the meeting will be at the University
of Washington, Tacoma in the Cherry Parkes building room 105. We have
several exciting things planned for this meeting

This will be the first meeting held in cooperation with the University
of Washington Tacoma's Grey Hat Group, a student computer security
group. Don McLane, lecturer at the Institute of Technology and the
faculty adviser to the Grey Hat Group, will be leading an information
security workshop preparing the students for the annual Cybersecurity
Exercises held in the Spring. Sponsored jointly by West Point, Fort
Lewis and the University of Washington Tacoma, the event consists of
cyber attack/defense exercises. This workshop will be open to Taclug
attendees and will run from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Another email will
be sent to the Taclug list with additional information including the
specific topics and the location of the workshop.

Following the information security workshop we will have a standard
Taclug meeting. Francois Caen has offered to present to the group on a
topic of his expertise. Jeff Maxwell and I will be creating a WiFi
captive portal for a local business using a surplus PC and the
m0n0wall distribution of FreeBSD. Joel Carlson is interested in
experimenting with virtualization technologies. Dave Hazel is
interested in working with others interested in the Drupal web content
management system.

I'm going to open mailing list threads on all 5 of the topics for the
November meeting so we can coordinate and gauge interest, I apologize
for the flood of email. We have two rooms available to us for the
November meeting, a large classroom and a large conference room, both
with projectors and wireless internet access.

Opcode Cache revisited

On Oct 20, David gave a presentation of the Lullabot topic on Drupal optimization. Opcode Cache was mentioned as a way to improve performance.

I found this information:

Opcode Cache for Dummies
http://devbee.com/opcode_cache_for_dummies
PHP is an interpreted language. This means that each time a PHP generated page is requested, the server must read in the various files needed and "compile" them into something the machine can understand (opcode). A typical Drupal page requires more than a dozen of these bits of code be compiled.
Opcode cache mechanisms preserve this generated code in cache so that it need only be generated a single time to server hundreds or millions of subsequent requests.
Enabling opcode cache will reduce the time it takes to generate a page by up to 90%.

Detecting Opcode Cache with PHPinfo()
Look for APC or eAccelerator (a fork of Turck MMCache)
Example:
eAccelerator
eAccelerator support enabled
Version 0.9.5
Caching Enabled true
Optimizer Enabled true
Memory Size 16,777,180 Bytes
Memory Available 16,770,416 Bytes
Memory Allocated 6,764 Bytes
Cached Scripts 1
Removed Scripts 0
Cached Keys 0

APC issues with Drupal
http://us3.php.net/apc
http://drupal.org/node/48946

Boost performance, throughout with opcode cache software
http://groups.drupal.org/node/2929

PHP caches
http://drupal.org/node/2603
* PHP Accelerator
* After Burner
* Zend Accelerator
* APC : Alternative PHP Cache
* eAccelerator
* Turck MMCache

A beginner's guide to caching data
http://www.lullabot.com/articles/a_beginners_guide_to_caching_data

All of the above is only scratching the surface of how to use caching.
Drupal Presenters for the Seattle PHP Group

I am requesting Drupal presenters for the Seattle PHP group. The group is interested in real world PHP applications. The presentations could be spread over the next few months.

The next meeting is November 1.
Calendar: http://php.meetup.com/49/calendar/

For topics of interest see this discussion: http://php.meetup.com/49/boards/view/viewthread?thread=3623161

The first presentation could be the upcoming Drupal barn raising combined with a quick overview of Drupal. (Gregory, are you available?)

If anyone is available for the Nov 1st PHP meeting, please post a response by Tuesday. Pick your favorite topic.

I think PHP developers are interested in many of the same topics as Drupalers; they just need the right exposure to get involved.

Thanks,
John Walling

SeaDUG Barnraising Preparation

During the September SeaDUG meeting, Jared suggested a great opportunity for a local barnraising project. We set the implementation date for November 10, 2007 - 11AM to 4PM, location to be decided.

A barn raising is a one or two-day event during which a community comes together to assemble a barn for one of its households. A certain amount of preparation is done beforehand. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barn_raising

Let's work on creating an install profile for brochureware websites that would bring small organizations into the Drupal community. This will provide them the tools to grow with their website and implement new features as needed.

Current install profiles
http://drupal.org/project/Installation+profiles

Install profile developer's guide

Install Profile API and Profile Wizard
http://drupal.org/project/install_profile_api
