Drubuntu VMware image

This is a preinstalled and preconfigured Ubuntu/LAMP/Eclipse Drupal development environment VMware image, that lets you experiment with developing Drupal on an open source platform, without needing to repartition your hard disk.

Several Drupal versions are already installed and running (see the links in Firefox and projects set up in Eclipse). Both PHP 4 and 5 are installed and can be selected on a per-project basis.

The VMware image can be downloaded from:
http://grugnog.com/drubuntu.tar.bz2
NOTE: this is a very large (2GB) download, so you should make sure you are on a fast connection with resume working, and have some disk space free! It is also not compatible with VMware Fusion for OS X (VMware Fusion uses the newest VMware format, used by VMware Player 2.0 Beta, VMware Workstation 6 Beta and VMware ACE 2.0 Beta).

To use this you will need:

  • To install the free VMware player from: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
  • To extract drubuntu.tar.bz2 using 7zip or a similar tool: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
  • Start the VMware player, open the image and start the machine up
  • To login use the username drubuntu and password drubuntu
  • A help window should pop up - you can start developing straight away, or install additional optional software

This is using the 6.06 version of Ubuntu, which is not the very latest version, but is supported long term and makes using PHP 4 and 5 simultaneously a lot simpler, and does not make a significant difference to the usability of the environment. If you have suggestions for improvements please post them here!
