Tools and Resources for Accessibility

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

We have a number of tools mentioned in various discussions on our site already, and I'm about to add another. So I thought I would put it in this wiki, where we can start linking to all these tools. It's also a workspace for refining our presentation of them until it's ready for prime time.

So if you see something that strikes you as somehow useful, but you're not sure how to present it, add it here. We can review it, refine it, and decide whether to add it to our main presentation for developers of sites, themes, modules, and core.

New Resource: Accessible Culture

GNU Accessibility statement

I found this site when a friend pointed me to their discussion of in-page links and accessibility. I like that discussion not only for its presentation of the results of tests on how well (or poorly) different combinations of browsers and user agents handle in-page links with variously coded anchors but because it's also a model of how to test a feature for accessibility. Of course, it doesn't cover all angles of possible testing — who could? — but this approach will help more developers understand more of the issues.

How You Can Help

I'll work on this more when I have time. If you have an idea, run with it. And if you find a tool that's useful but don't quite know right away where to put it or how to present it, add it here, and we'll all chip in.

And if this turns out to be clunky, we'll figure out another way to get this done.

I'm jumping in here. Been lurking in this group for a while. I'm generally familiar with accessibility concepts and have read through various standards a few times, but have no real-world experience doing focused and thorough accessible Drupal development. (Tho personally I sometimes am unable to use a mouse or mouse/touch pad.) I'll start by creating a list of totally unorganized things (and a heading for it). Not sure if my inexperience in this area will mean I'm adding helpful stuff (since I'm not too far from the target audience) or if it'll mean I'm adding things that are off-topic. Provide feedback by editing as necessary. - aenw

Stuff That Might be Useful, but Needs To Be Reviewed and Organized

  • Designing Accessibility Into Themes - a short guide by Ann McMeekin for D7UX. It's a good starting document because it's not overwhelming, but neither is it too simplified. A great jumping off point to think about issues, challenges, and to explore best practices,
