Regional Groups Redux

We're in the process of building up a sizeable group of Drupal users up here in Coffs Harbour, and a number (> 1, even) of businesses and volunteers developing websites in Drupal, so I've been thinking it's time to set up a local Drupal user/developer group here, initially only online but probably with semi-regular meetings before long. My first thought was to set up a site for it, but then I thought that's really what groups.drupal.org is for, so I created a group for it (still pending moderation). Then, just as I was congratulating myself on my initiative, my wife Allison pointed me to this discussion from last year, which as far as I can see reached no firm conclusion on the wisdom or otherwise of regional groups on groups.drupal.org.

The objectives of this particular group are to:

Do the normal social/business network-y stuff that groups on gdo do,

Provide a support forum that relieves me of the burden of being the single local guru everybody turns to (and nobody wants to pay), but doesn't require throwing non-technical users to the drupal.org forums,

Reassure potential local clients that there is more than the one crackpot in town that supports Drupal, and a wide range of users that are (generally) happy with it.

I agree that fragmenting the Australia group would being a bad thing, but I expect any developers in the Coffs group would be members of the Australia group as well, and know how to post or cross/post appropriately, and I think that splitting a regional group's online presence away from drupal.org entirely is a more serious case of fragmentation. I also think that in this particular case it's a complementary group with a somewhat different purpose rather than a regional subgroup. I'd like to avoid treading on anybody's toes, but given that the last discussion didn't seem to result in any agreed policy, I'd like to rephrase the question from "are regional groups a wise idea?" to:

"Would anybody be seriously upset/offended/angered if there was a Coffs Harbour regional group on gdo?"

A single "yes", and I'll happily set up a little site on another domain.

Comprehensive Australia Drupal map

Hi

I'm putting together a Google map which will show all:

Development companies

Design companies who use Drupal

Major Drupal employers

Meetup locations

Drupal in Australia

This will be a managed list, to account for quality. Each listing should have a link to street view, etc. Ie. it should be all professional so that we can use it for customers and overseas visitors.

List criteria:

Drupal development houses.

Design companies who are verified by known Drupal development freelancer/company as providing Drupal sites as part of their overall package.

Businesses who are actively employing Drupal developers in ongoing projects (ie. more than one person on payroll) Again - need to be verified by someone I trust.

Known Drupal freelancers, again need to be verifiable and actively working with Drupal.

Misc locations, like popular meetup places.

Please catch me in #drupal-au if you want on the listing or have any suggestions.

Simon

Drupal developer | Functionality Improvement

Hello, i'm basically looking for some freelance work by a drupal developer happy to jump into a pre-existing drupal site and improve functionality.

Basically I'm looking to build a site like crowdspring.com - Which involves a user posting a 'project request' as a node. Other users can view this and then submit a 'project proposal' (or a solution) related directly to that node. So in other words is it possible to link nodes together into groups where the initial project request is a parent node and then replies or proposals for that project can be added, from either an existing node or created specifically for that project.

I have a set budget, and I want to get started ASAP. Site, Hosting, and design are already in place. I only really want to work on improving the functionality and my existing drupal skills can't help me solve this functionality problem.

If you are interested feel free to contact me and ask any further questions.

Seeking Quote for a Custom Theme | Contract

I have a Drupal website in development and am seeking quotes for a custom theme and a small amount of graphics work.

I'm a developer myself and have built custom modules for this site (they have theme support enabled). This project is entirely for customising the appearance of the site; no work on modules will be required.

The goals of the project are:

A theme for the website that gives the website a distinctive, personalised character. This is most likely best achieved through use of small graphics and icons that match the visual theme, as well as good CSS styling. I have a downloaded theme on the site at the moment, but it looks too generic. It needs more personality and individuality.

I have the main website logo in mockup form, but I'm no artist and it will need to be redrawn to add professionalism.

Integration of other related images I will provide. I'm flexible on whether they should go in the theme, but they are available as possible resources.

The theme must be flexible width to fill the whole browser window.

The theme must be 3 columns, as I'm using a lot of blocks.

Primary links as tabs along the top of the page. Right now there are 2. There should be room for 4.

Secondary links as small links along the bottom of the page.

Site slogan, shortcut icon and mission statement should be supported (mission statement on the story lists/front page as usual - not on every page. I think this is standard).

On the dev site right now, the theme colours are black, white and yellow, especially a dark gold colour. I'm a big believer in creative freedom, but I'd like the site to focus on that colour range, especially keeping gold as a prominent colour (you can change the black and white if you have a better idea).

A lot of the blocks on the site right now are looking very similar, as they are lists of links. Something needs to be done to give them a bit of variety for fear that the site starts looking like a telephone directory.

In the top right of the site, I need some static links (Home, Help, Your Account, etc).

All artwork used should be images we are legally entitled to use. Ownership of any custom made artwork should belong with me. Any coding done for the theme I need a licence to, but do not require exclusive ownership.

Also, I will require the following to visually integrate some shopping cart software with the Drupal theme:

Small (20x20) icons for a shopping cart, save cart, load cart, empty cart, help.

CSS classes for:

- buttons

- form input fields

- HTML table of info

- HTML table of info, highlighted cells

- Warning message

Please contact me with any questions, portfolios, or quotes and time estimates. I will share specific site information with parties who take a serious interest.

Thanks!

Em Space services a variety of clients from Lonely Planet to design companies like Publicity Works through to education sector in Swinburne University. We are based in Edithvale, and in the process of setting up a second office in the city.

Looking for help/consultation/lessons

Hey, I'm in search of a Sydney based drupal developer. I really like drupal and it's potential but i find it difficult to find solutions for specific problems. I have had help developing my site from a drupal developer who is based in New York but i'm not finding it too useful given the time difference etc. So i'm asking anyone who works with drupal and lives preferably in Sydney to contact me please!

Ideally I would like to find someone prepared to teach me the more technical side of developing drupal websites and i'm prepared to pay. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to go about this? Would it be easier to take some php courses which are abundant in Sydney, or is there a better solution?

Any comments are appreciated.

Chris

Freelance Drupal web developer - Melbourne | Meppy

Looking for a freelance Drupal developer (preferably in Melbourne) who can work with me on some reasonably small websites for SMB customers.

Need to have the following basic skills:

Create Themes

Create custom modules

Work with myself, my graphic designer and the client to spec and price jobs

Experience with 5.x and 6.x

Desirable skills:

Flash

Joomla (have one client already on Joomla, so this is not a major requirement)

Initial requirement is to port a poorly developed small site and improve and add to the document library feature with members having access to certain documents based on roles. My graphic designer is also looking for a web developer with Drupal and Flash skills so we are looking to pool our resources.

If you are in Melbourne and interested in ad-hoc and project work then please email me at the following with a bit of info about yourself and your experience and your basic rates.

jobs AT meppy DOT com DOT au

Cheers
Drupal Developer | infoMe

infoMe is about to relaunch Don’t Tell, a street fashion portal for Australian women to discuss outfits, give opinions and read articles. Over the past few months we’ve received a bit of customer feedback that has resulted in a redesign and change of focus for Don’t Tell. We’re looking for a Drupal developer to quickly complete the tasks that remain for the launching the new design of Don’t Tell on the Drupal platform.

You can view the old site at www.donttell.com.au and you can view the new site, which you will work on, at www.donttell.com.au/test.

The tasks that need to be completed in the immediate future are:

Inline insertion of images

Removing all the extra fields that appear when creating a blog post or article

Having users information inserted into a mailing list application when they registered

Having users information removed from the database if they hit unsubscribe on the website

Just making sure everything is setup correctly

Transferring the site over to www.donttell.com.au rather than /test

Putting the Don’t Tell icon up for the website

Ensuring the pages are all good in terms of SEO

Ensure users can add their own outfits

Fix-up the forum look and feel

Fix-up the forum

Insert Google Analytics

infoMe will certainly be adding more features to the Don’t Tell site once these tasks are completed and would look to you first to get involved.

Send your resume and a quote to scott no_spam @donttell.com.au by the 26th of June 2008 if you’re interested.

Cheers,
Scott

Sydney July Meetup

**Updated Details ***
Same thing this month.

When: Thursday, July 17th
Time: 7pm - 9pm (Show up around 6:45!!)
Venue: ABC Centre 700 Harris Street, Ultimo Map

The ABC Centre has some security issues, so it is important that people arrive early so that James can sign everyone into the building. If you have problems you can call either of us.

Agenda:
This month James has volunteered to review/showcase the new scaffolding module (mainly aimed at developers)

It is possible that we may have to leave at 8:30, in which case we'll move to a nearby pub. Remember to bring your laptops to show each other what you're working on.

Post below if you can talk about something (anything is ok, everyone has something to share) or if you're are interested in other topics for discussion.

Remember to sign up, and I'll send out a reminder announcement a day before the meeting. This will also help us plan numbers/audience.

Table "Node" Field "language"

Drupal 6.x. Table "node".

What should the value of the "language" field be if the displayed text is Chinese.

If a value is required, are there any other things that need to be done so that Chinese symbols are correctly displayed.

Any help appreciated.

Steve
http://prime357.org

ps. I've got a thread running at my site which I think this may be a part issue to it. As you can imagine it's becoming very confusing as all I see is either unicode or Chinese symbols (can't read Chinese).

Looking for Contributors - C++ (and other stuff in time)

Hope I'm not out of line with this request.

I'm now on the lookout for C++ contributors (and other like stuff in time). I started the site http://prime357.org, which is a separation from my personal blogging (http://superjacent.net - running) site, in early April this year. Too much geeky stuff was creeping into the running site.

The purpose of Prime357 was to track my development in C++ and a place to continue development of the Wordpress to Drupal converter, a Realbasic application. I've got some good how-to type tutorials (my opinion) and short demonstration programs which are presented via the Drupal book method. I first wanted to get some content into the site before seeking contributors so at at least anybody interested could get a feel for my intent (not that it's set in concrete).

Unfortunately, as regards C++ my time has been diverted to other IT stuff, the Wordpress converter and very soon Purebasic development which will in time will replace Realbasic as the development tool for the Wordpress (and phpBB) converter. I'm getting a heap of hits relating to the C++ stuff and I'd hate to see it dry up.

Contributors do not have to be fully fledged C++ coding experts but proficient enough to know what they are talking about which translates to explaining why things are/were done in a certain way. Ideally in normal English, non sms speak.

What can I offer contributors? That's a good question, nothing but a sense of satisfaction.

I'm Australian based (Melbourne) and the server is in the US. So any local contributors would be very welcome but that's not to say international ones wouldn't be.

Okay, that's my pitch.

Steve
http://prime357.org and Looking for Contributors.

ps. Where I've mentioned C++, if you wanted, you could substitute PHP and/or Drupal itself.

Developer Jobs

My drupal forum gets a couple of Job postings a week. I also try to write informative content where I get the chance:
Base 36 (Vancode) - leading digit/character

I hope this is the right area for this question which refers to the 'thread' field of the table 'comments'. I provide a non php solution to convert Wordpress data to Drupal. I recently became aware that the thread field is not a string of decimal numbers but is in fact a string of base 36 (Vancode) numbers. I've created the necessary functions to convert to and from base 36 format but I'm a little confused re - the leading digit/character.

Here is an excerpt from http://api.drupal.org/api/function/int2vancode/5

Generate vancode.

Consists of a leading character indicating length, followed by N digits with a numerical value in base 36. Vancodes can be sorted as strings without messing up numerical order.

It goes: 00, 01, 02, ..., 0y, 0z, 110, 111, ... , 1zy, 1zz, 2100, 2101, ..., 2zzy, 2zzz, 31000, 31001, ...

So,
decimal 35 = z
and so it is written as
0z
. The leading zero in this case, how does that indicate length? Therefore
decimal 36 = 10
and so is written as
110
as per the excerpt above. Again, how does the leading character
1
indicate length when the length of
10
is
2
.

Obviously I can see a pattern forming whereby the leading character for the first 36 is 0, the next 36 is 1, the next 2 and so on up until z. Is there an assumption that the leading character will never be greater than "z".

Any help appreciated.

Steve
http://prime357.org

Update: Since no response from the initial group (Database Schema API) I'm posting to other groups I think might be relevant. Secondary question is, for specific backend database type questions which group or forum is most relevant. I've got other backend database type questions waiting in the wings.

Drupal Community / Social Networking Consultant | BoaB interactive

We are looking for export Drupal consultants who have experience implementing community/social sites. Expertise in Organic Groups and Taxonomy Access and similar is much sought after.

Basically we have a client who needs a community system to be used in an intranet setting. Multiple groups can be created and individual users can of course belong to multiple groups and create/edit/share content between groups.

Our company is based in Australia and we would have preference to work with an Australian consultant. Of course if we find a good match any where on the planet we are more than happy.

We are looking to implement this system very soon so we would appreciate a quick response (isn't that always the case!).

Cheers,

Drupal at Open CeBIT

For those not aware, we have organized a stand for the CeBIT expo in the open source section. It will be there from Tuesday to Thursday, during the normal operating times.

We have made arrangements for all Drupal community members to attend CeBIT (and our booth) for FREE - normally a $65 cost at the door. Just signup on http://mycebit.com.au and use the discount code "drupalca08" to get your free ticket.

We really need more people to help us man the stand and evangelize Drupal to all the passersby. Please see which sessions are available at http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pXcnqgbzn6lPqSR4EACPvSA and then SIGN UP at http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pXcnqgbzn6lPqSR4EACPvSA

Also, if you're more interested in finding out more details about Drupal or Open Source, you can attend one of the presentations that we will be giving in the Open CeBIT Theatre. We've partnered with the Joomla! group to organize this and you can see a schedule at http://sydney.joomladay.org.au/content/view/26/1/ You can also attend our event on sunday if you haven't heard -> http://groups.drupal.org/node/11310

Some Drupal help needed, desperately... | CCNR

I need some help upgrading some websites from Drupal 4 to 6--I've been locked out, as the password is no longer recognised. This is a recognised problem. See http://drupal.org/node/105114 and my comments in there.

I would preferably like to be f-to-f with someone who can meet with me, or at least describe what is going on over the phone and fix it...

I am hosted on a webservice that has fantastico (great for people like me), but I have also arranged shell access.

If you are interested, please email me at larryjhs@fastmail.fm with your rate...

I posted this in March, but no solutions so far...

have noticed a whole thread of posts on this, but none seem to help : http://drupal.org/node/105114

It may well be a the server end, they have had a look, but they don't support 3rd party software :(

The server is running Apache version 1.3.41 (Unix) PHP version 5.2.5
MySQL version 4.1.22-standard

I try to log in

mysite.com/user/

it won't accept my p/w do I ask for a new temp p/w, which I log in with, and put in a new p/w. But then it doesn't accept that and I am locked out.

the posts mentioned commenting out

Solution: In user.module, comment out
sess_regenerate();
return 'user/'. $user->uid;

so that it looks like

//sess_regenerate();
//return 'user/'. $user->uid;

but this code is not in my version of user.module.

Another post, way down the list suggested to delete php.ini. I don't believe I have a php.ini file to delete (where would it be??) as the last person on this commented.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to get in. Obviously the next step is to upgrade to 6.1, but I can't do that properly (uninstalling extra modules etc), until I can get in.

I am rather desparate, as I need to update content!!

DAPC Meetup

For everyone still interested in getting together for some Drupal fun, we have arranged for a small get together where we can have some presentations, discussions, and general hacking fest. We only have room for about 40 people, so sign up quickly (on this page).

When
We will have a full day of fun on Sunday, May 18th, 2008. We will open up for registration/greetings at 9:00am and actually get things kicked off at around 9:30ish and likely finish around 5pm. We will probably move to a nearby pub to continue the socializing and for dinner/drinks.

Where
We have secured a computer room at the University of Sydney.

Faculty of Pharmacy
Pharmacy Building (A15)
University of Sydney
Sydney, NSW, 2006
listed at location E15 in the map of the Camperdown Campus
and a google map of the area and the building

What
We will have a fairly informal structure, probably somewhat like a barcamp. Which means we will try to organize most things on the day and will need your involvement. If you would like to make a presentation or have a topic for discussion, please post it as a comment to this post. We will take these presentations first when we are making the schedule on the day.

We do not have any catering for this event, and I've been advised that food outlets on campus will be closed so we will have a break to allow people to walk to something near by for lunch, but I would encourage people to bring some snacks and water.

There will be some computers available in the room, but we encourage people to bring their laptops as well. Internet access will be available, with details given out on the day.

How Much $$?
Its $0 - FREE!
The venue has been donated for free (Thanks to the Faculty of Pharmacy @ USyd) and there won't be any catered food or other schwag given out, so it only costs for people to show up and our time as organizers. If everyone can be respectful and keep things clean, hopefully we can get invited back.

Anything Else?
If there are any special needs, please email me ASAP. There should be handicap access to the building, and potentially hearing impaired services available, but I will need to confirm anything. Special dietary needs should be self catered, though if we organize any snacks it would be helpful to know of any limitations/allergies.

Presenters should preferably bring their own computer, otherwise make sure to bring it on a usb stick in a standard format. Please email me if you have any questions.

You can contact myself via the contact form and at 0431-947-331 or Jim Woulfe at webct_AT_pharm_usyd_edu_au

We will have signs to help direct people, but don't feel bad if you get lost and need to call.

Drupal Developer required urgently | Blue Square Design

We built a handful of sites in drupal last year and the developer that worked for us has left. We don’t have anyone else who knows this stuff so we need the services of someone that can assist when we have additions/problems with the sites on an ongoing basis.

We are really looking for someone that knows Drupal really well so if any issues arise they can be rectified as quickly as possible.

There are two sites that require work at the moment:
1. www.modra.com.au – this is quite urgent – need to know if you can do it and a quote for work.
2. www.chgpn.com.au – just need to quote for some new additions

Modra
The Modra site is the most urgent. It was put live at the end of last year, and there are a couple of problems with editing site as well as a couple of things that need to be added to the site. the developer who worked with us has left without finishing the project and was planning to ‘contract’ back to us. 4 months have gone by and he still hasn’t rectified anything, hence my email to you.

There are approximately 15 modules which have been installed, I can give you a list of these if it helps. I don’t have any technical knowledge in this area, so you’ll have to bear with me.

Specifically, the things that require work are:

Whitepapers download
Within the Products sections there was to be a SECURE SECTION where user registration was required to access White Papers, etc. At the moment, a user can download brochures, but with whitepapers the client wants to capture name, company, email address prior to them being able to download it.

Keyword search
This is something that never got implemented originally that needs to be added in.

Bug
There is an issue in the Contact Us section where on several pages in this section, in any user other than the admin user, you are unable to edit the page. the edit button just doesn’t appear. Its weird because it appears on some but not on others. It only happens in this area. The same problem has come up with another site in a different area.

CHGPN
This site went live in the middle of last year and they have just come back to us with some additional development they require. They want to create an event calendar and online event registration.

The site runs on a user type menu system. Eg. A piece of content can belong to the general practitioners section and the practice nurses section.

They have a manual process for currently entering their event calendar at the moment, and the registration happens offline. What we want to do is to be able to add an event to the site and have it display in multiple areas on the site, as per the example above. Ie. There may be an event that applies to both GPs and Practice Nurses, therefore when the event is added in, you can select which area it is to display in.

The events would need to display in a chronological order and only display say the next 3 months, and will change as they occur. That way they don’t need to remember to unpublish them after the event takes place. A user would select the event from the list and be taken to the event details page where there is a link to register online for the event. The registration form needs to be pretty simple, and would just send them an email with the registrant’s details.

Newbie with Drupal

Hi All

I am new to Drupal and am impressed with the scope of what it can do. One of my targets in my job this year is to set up a content management system (namely Drupal) that can accommodate up to about 10 predesigned website templates. So that we can relatively quickly produce professional websites via the system.

I have started working with the Zen theme in Drupal 6 and are already familiar with the Zen Structure, tableless css html etc. and I believe that it would be the best starting theme. We would be interested in contacting experienced drupal developers that might wish to do some consultancy work with this project as it will take a while for me to come up to speed with Drupal.

I am attending both Lullabot training workshops in Melbourne next week so it should be a baptism of fire for me!

My coding experience is predominantly in PERL, MYSQL, javascript, HTML, CSS with elements of PHP, C, VB, Access, etc...

Looking forward to meeting uall!

Matt Wright

Registration is Open!

That's right - come and get it! People watching the conference website have already found out that registrations have been opened. We're accepting session proposals and looking for the communities input. The t-shirt logo competition is open for submissions and voting as well. Once you've created an account on the website, you'll also be directed to the website where you can pay the conference fees. Ticket prices have been set at AUD$160 and we have made arrangements to offer an early-bird price of AUD$115, which is a massive discount so get in while you can! We have also posted information about the tentative program and some logistics information - particularly for any international visitors there is important visa information available. We're still working on some of the details and ironing out some kinks, but its open to the public now and we appreciate any of your feedback.

As always, please contact the organizing team if you have any questions - including sponsorships or the website building competition.
