Meedan is a small, mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to expanding the amount of cross-language discussion on the web. Based in San Francisco, but with employees in several parts of the world, we work as a tight-knit and ambitious team in a difficult but exciting context of cross-cultural nonprofit journalism. Our core focus is translation between Arabic and English using an unusual hybrid of machine- and human-translation. We are looking for energetic coders who enjoy working on big problems like internationalization and cross-cultural interaction. The developer will work alongside a design staff to turn photoshop designs into functional code. This is a full-time position primarily writing PHP in a Drupal environment.
Requirements include:
Demonstrated experience developing production web applications
Expertise with PHP development in the LAMP environment
Expertise with Drupal development
Expertise with version control; familiarity with git and github preferred
Expertise with automated testing (eg, unit testing)
Expertise in system administration and strong working knowledge of the Linux command line
Strong familiarity with internationalization concepts and related technical issues
Strong familiarity with API-based development
Familiarity with AJAX design patterns and fluent generally in Web 2.0 technology concepts
Familiarity with cloud-based approaches to virtualization, particularly Amazon EC2, is a plus
Ability to speak both Arabic and English is strongly preferred but not required
Familiarity with automated testing methods a plus
Job responsibilities:
Develop Drupal modules for different features based on user requirements
Provide integration of different Drupal modules, and with external services
Adapt and modify existing Druapl modules to extend functionality and add new features
Work in javascript to debug front-end issues
Work from anywhere in the world (but Arabic-speaking regions and San Francisco are preferred. If you are living in San Francisco, you will be expected to work on-site.)
