Two Weeks to Go! Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 Updates

In just two weeks, Drupal designers and developers from Alberta, BC, PEI & Montana will gather at the University of Lethbridge for Drupal Camp Alberta 2008.

In the past week - we secured our speakers & sponsors, opened registration and are expecting approx 100 attendees - many of who are holding out on registration right now :-)

If you haven't registered already, please take the time to sign up - your commitment of $30 gets you in for two days, provides you a beer, some food, and a shirt - pretty good deal, and accessible to students, and those without luxury expense accounts.

Much has happened over the past week that I'd like to share:

We dropped the sponsor rates, due to the generosity of the University of Lethbridge - they are providing top - rate facilities that dropped our facility budget a ton. We will be holding our workshops at the University's Health & Wellness Facilities in a beautiful lecture theatre and three breakout rooms.

The stand up guys at Drupal Camp Vancouver committed some surplus cash they hand on hand from their camp. What a bunch of solid guys - this helps the short term cashflow a ton!

We've decided on a t-shirt design. Breaking from tradition, we designed a shirt that follows fashion trends a little closer than Drupal trends, but we think we'll be OK (Drupal Camp, Boot Camp, Military Crest - you get the connection.

Accomodation at the University Student housing is still just $40 / person. They run it like a hotel (with towel service, etc.) in the summer months.

Speakers showed up! We've got a great lineup ranging from a 300 Drupal Multi-Site Installation Case Study, to the Services Module - by the Module maintainer himself! We've got a talk for everybody - Designers and Business types should get equal benefit from Jess McMullin's testing & taxonomy talk - as well as my theming how-to. Newbies will get a foothold on Drupal vs. Joomla! vs. CakePHP from Daniel @ image X, and developers will dive into google maps & new module overviews equally well.

We've got a code sprint recipient! Amanda Stepenko (Olympic Bobseld Hopeful) is looking for a site to raise sponsor awareness. I will create the photoshop mockup for my Zen subtheming talk, and together at the conference the codesprint participants will bring the site to life!

Birds of a Feather sessions, Networking night, Track, Gym, Hiking, Art Gallery & More at the venue.

Register today, and you'll be guaranteed a shirt (first 50 attendees!), our second run might not arrive on time.

SEE YOU THERE, Please blog, twitter, email, nudge - anything you can to do help evangelize http://www.drupalcampalberta.org!

Surrey Drupal Users Group

Surrey Drupal Users Group – 1st Meeting on May 22nd, 2008

Our inaugural meeting was well attended and turned out to be a social gathering. Dale, who organized the Vancouver Drupal Users Group, graced us with his presence and gave us his blessing. Experienced website-builder but Drupal-newbie, Katy, asked lots of questions and is always thrilled to discover how much is NOT built-in to Drupal. Katy assumed that Drupal came with full blog capability for the single-user when the blog module is enabled. But unfortunately, that is not the case. One needs to use views to set up the archiving and the tag fields and other wonderful blog features. Experienced Drupallers, Joe and Dale, were helpful in offering tips on setting up a blog in Drupal. Would anyone like to give a short presentation on how to use Views to set up a single-user blog at our next meeting? I would really appreciate it. I’m sure others would, too.

So please remind me, what’s so great about Drupal? I’d really like to know. Because even for web designers experienced in hand-coding HTML/CSS and PHP, Drupal seems super hard to learn.

But I am thankful for the Vancouver Drupal User community who have been quite helpful and helping me to jump over the bumps I’ve encountered along the way.

So come on out to our second meeting on June 12th, 2008. We’re meeting in beautiful Surrey, the City of Parks, at the ABC restaurant in Fleetwood at 15373 Fraser Hwy. Wireless Internet is available. Look for us along the right hand side of the restaurant where we can pull some tables together when the group gets larger.

Next meeting of Surrey Drupal Users Group: Thursday, June 12th

For June 12th, the topics will be:

Short Demo of Ubercart by Katy

We're looking for volunteers to do a short 20-30 minute presentation on one or more of the following:

how to set up a single user blog in Drupal

how to set up a photo gallery

how to add a video to the home page

tutorial on theming

Any volunteers? Bring your laptop and show us a demo and then explain step by step how to do it properly the first time. Here’s a good outline of how to give a 15 minute presentation. But we'll give you 30 minutes :-) http://blog.tazzu.com/2008/05/29/have-the-spotlight-on-the-vancouver-joo...

Katy is also available on 1st and 3rd Thursdays for Code Thursdays. Or Co-Work as the Seattle Users Group calls it. According to Wikipedia,

Coworking is an emerging trend for a new pattern for working. Typically work-at-home professionals or independent contractors or people who travel frequently end up working in an isolated way. Coworking is the social gathering of a group of people, who are still working independently, but who share values and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with talented people in the same space.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Surrey Drupal Users Group!

Drupal Programmer who can do it all and would be interested in an equity position + paid compensation. | Startup

We have built a web 3.0 online music property and are hoping to launch once we integrate a few critical improvements to our current site. Startups tend to get a bad rap, I understand this. Logging long hours and being paid with promises is never an easy thing to do. Ironically, this is exactly what we're asking you to do. Our company is in a position to offer equity plus pay you a reduced fee for your contract work that will bring our site to a place we feel comfortable launching with. Ideally you are located within New York City and fairly young - not having to feed a family or children. Or maybe you have steady income elsewhere and are interested in being a part of the energy and excitement that comes with positioning yourself as our CTO.

I'm rambling now.
Here come the CliffsNotes:

Web 3.0 Music Property seeks CTO.
Compensated with equity and currency (not the pound, or even the euro).
Get our Drupal 5.0 site launch ready. Improve current functionality / Add additional modules.
Estimated development time needed: 2 months (part time)
Budget: $1,500.00 (you probably make this by the hour elsewhere)

If interested -- or just feel like telling me off: DrupalMania@gmail.com

Thanks for the read.

Drupal Camp Alberta 2008

DCA08 is unlike any corporate conference you've ever attended - and for good reason. Focusing on "Drupal" - an open source content management system and application framework, DCA08 is a low-cost, highly collaborative "unconference" held in at the University of Lethbridge, in Southern Alberta, Canada.

Gone are the days of sponsored vendor presentations and for-profit registration fees. Our peer taught, volunteer-run sessions will by heavy with "doers", and light on the "talkers".

Join us July 3 & 4 from 8am - 5pm both days (Networking event on July 3rd)

Official Website: http://www.drupalcampalberta.org

REGISTRATION WILL HAPPEN ON THE OFFICIAL SITE (Don't signup here) Thanks!

Registration is now open at http://www.drupalcampalberta.org/event/drupal-camp-alberta-2008

I have a website that needs help. All transactions are not showing on merchant account side. I need to find someone who knows Drupal enough to find the problem and fix it. I also need someone who can set up the shipping and taxes for products shipped to US and Canada. Most products shipped from various locations in the US.

I need someone who knows well enough to get the job done. Preferrably no students or anyone in process of learling Drupal. I need an expert.

LDAP Integration

Anyone out there adept at LDAP Integration with Drupal? I know there is a module for that. Just wondering if anyone has successfully used it and knows of any caveats or specific advice regarding this. I'm simply adding a Drupal site to an existing LDAP setup and would like to use the existing system for user authentication. Thanks,

After a short discussion with the powers that be at the University of Lethbridge, I have full approval to host Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 in June or early July.

Our facilities are top notch http://www.uleth.ca/conference/ (open WIFI, theatres, breakout rooms, entertainment and fitness facilities, AND campus housing summer rentals) - so we are going to take the bull by the horns and spread the word.

I know the organizers for DCV08 put it together at the speed of light, we are going to follow suit.

Site coming soon with a call for speakers! If you'd like to present, participate and network your butt off - let me know!

Need multiplie currencies for Ubercart

Hello,

I'm currently installing Ubercart with Drupal 5. My client has requested to show the price for his book in 3 currencies for these 3 countries: Canada (CDN), United States (USD), and Great Britain (Euros). Does anyone have a module that does this? At this point I'm not too worried about having the module check xe.com or yahoo.com for the most up to date currency calculations. I've heard it can slow down the site.

Hello Drupalers,

Katy's thread prompted me to install XAMPP on my Windows XP workstation with a vhost configuration. I've also got an Ubuntu 8.04 desktop with XAMPP installed as a VM on my workstation as well.

What do the Ubuntu developers use for graphics and illustration?

I'm wondering what people use for version control (I installed subversion on Ubuntu).

I'm also interested in version control processes people use when the site is a CMS (i.e. not static).

What other tools do you folks use?

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm a freelance web designer/developer with 6 years experience in handcoding HTML/CSS with 2 years experience in PHP/mySQL. However, I'm new to working with Drupal. I need help installing several working copies of Drupal 5.x on a development server on my PC. My OS is Windows XP Pro. I've installed Apache 2.2/PHP 5/mySQL 5 using downloads from apache2triad.net. It was easy to install and my PHP scripts work great. I've installed Drupal 5 with Ubercart and it works well. But when I install a second instance of Drupal 5, the previous install doesn't work. It seems like the database works only for the new install of Drupal. I would like some advice on how to set this up properly so I can have several Drupal instances working on my development server.

I'm currently reading through the Drupal Handbook on multi-site installation but there are so many different explanations, I find it quite confusing. Is there someone who can walk me through it? I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Katy :-)

Drupal Camp Vancouver 2008 ~ Wrap-up of Gratitude and Happiness

{NOTE: This wrap-up post was emailed to the Drupal Camp Vancouver attendees and cross-posted here for posterity and community sharing - daveo}

THANKS MUCHO

We're a few days past Drupal Camp Vancouver and we, Dave, Dale and Ariane your earnest organizers, want to say "Thanks!" to everyone who sponsored, volunteered, presented, and otherwise helped out to make DCV08 a enjoyable and beneficial event. The vibe and the knowledge sharing resulted in some outstanding collaboration and compelling networking for sure.

As for me, I wanted three things for DCV08: 1) eco-friendly t-shirts; 2) a party with free beer; and 3) to fly up Dmitri the 12-year old Drupalist for the event. While the special guest didn't happen, the success of the Fearless City code sprint (http://www.drupalcampvancouver.org/node/81) made up for it. I feel leaving a legacy of volunteer-ism and activism using open source software is an important precedent to set. So as Meatloaf is wont to sing, "Two outta three ain't bad."

WHAT'D YA THINK?

I briefly considered sending out an "exit survey" to gauge opinions and help plan for next year, however the reality of other job tasks got in the way. Instead, please blog about what worked for you. What didn't fly? Highlights? Disappointments? Suggestions? Motivations? Don't keep 'em inside! Share your opinion on any related topic (venues, food, talks, etc.) for the collective benefit. Tag your posts "dcv08" or "drupalcampvancouver" to maximum handiness.

SHARING

Presenters, please share your session notes, slides, and examples from your (awesome) presentation at: http://www.drupalcampvancouver.org/presenters_notes

Pictures are still coming in! Spot yourself in the Flickr photos at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/dcv08/
Lend a hand and tag 'em up!

Photographers, please add your shots to the Drupal Camp Vancouver Flickr pool: http://www.flickr.com/groups/drupal-camp-vancouver-08/

Micro-bloggers use the #dcv08 hash tag to spread your messages to the DCV alumni via Twitter and Twemes.

SPONSORS

Many folks asked how we managed to put on a conference with tasty drinks, mighty sandwiches, and bamboo t-shirts for $20. The answer is the sponsors. Links and mentions in blog posts are a great way to say thanks for their support and encourage ongoing involvement.

For your linking convenience, sponsors are listed at: http://www.drupalcampvancouver.org/drupal-camp-vancouver-sponsors

MORE DRUPAL

Visit your new friends across the border! Sign-up for the Seattle Drupal Camp coming up next month at Youngstown Arts Center June 27 and 28 - For sponsor and attendee info visit: http://groups.drupal.org/node/11296

For you metro Vancouver locals, consider attending (or even helping out) the local user group to keep your Drupal buzz going:
http://groups.drupal.org/vancouver

PS We are hereby starting rumours about Drupal Camp Victoria sometime in the Fall. Who's stepping up to organize?

OUT OF TOWNERS

For those who came from out-of-town. Wow ~ we're honoured you made the effort to attend our humble gathering by plane, bus, and ferry. When you're back in town, tell us at Vancouver Drupal Group page as there are often meet-ups and events in the area. And if there's anything we can do to help out with Drupal community building in your area, let us know.

T-SHIRTS

Were you registered but didn't make it on Saturday? Email dave (at) raincitystudios (dot) com to arrange to pick your bamboo and organic cotton t-shirt from the Raincity Studios office (1 Alexander, Suite 420, Vancouver).

Thanks to you for your participation! We look forward to seeing you all again.

DaveO (for Dale and Ariane - collectively, the "DCV08 Tugboats")

PS LOST - Missing black hemp hoodie - last seen at the Flux Party

Drupal Profiles follow up and discussion of setting up client sites on a VPS/Reseller hosting

I really enjoyed the install profile talk that Boris gave on Saturday about install profiles and how they can make everyone's life a lot easier. But I think there were still a couple of things I felt I missed and was wondering if anyone could help clear them up.

1. Boris placed the themes and modules folders inside the Profile folder and said something to the effect that if you install the site using the profile Drupal remembers that your modules and themes are in that folder, is that correct, or did I miss something?

2. Based on the Bryght SVN of their profile it also appears that you can symlink these folders back to their counterpart folders in root. So the modules and themes are actually not linked in the /html/sites folder at all but that the profile manages them. Is this the best way to do that?

That's just two of the small questions that have been bugging me since that talk.

I've been pulling out my hair trying to figure out how to set up a new VPS for clients that would enable me to update all the sites as easily and quickly as possible. I've had a look here http://drupal.org/node/39807 and most of it makes sense, however they don't mention install profiles and that's what I want to use.

So I made some chicken scratches which I have attached seems like that didn't work - another link here and was wondering if anyone could help decipher the best way to do this. Bear in mind that it might be safer and easier to symlink the files within the /home/username/public_html folder (as discussed in other posts), but for now this is what I came up with.

The idea is to store the drupal core, themes, modules and profiles not in the user account, and in this configuration I also store the sites not in the user account, can this work?

Will the multisite setup work if the sites folder is not within the public_html folder but doubly symlinked?

Any discussion/help greatly appreciated.

Oh and well done to the awesome team who put last weekend's events together, I got more out of 4 sessions that I have out of forums, books and just winging it in the last 6 months.

New to Drupal and looking for collaborators?

I'm nearing the end of my current project and about to start a few others. I'm usually a lone coder but I'm thinking it would be cool to meet up with some other non-elites in Vancouver, newish to Drupal and work on a project or two together. We can learn from each other and perhaps make something cool. I'm sure there are others out there like me kinda between the "I suck" and "I kick ass" threshold, not quite ready for the big leagues but wanting to get there quick. Or am I the only one?

If interested, message me or introduce yourself at Drupal Camp!

Looking for a drupal themer/developer to help with a project with tight time lines. Go Live date June 1st but must have lead time for testing and tweaking.

Requirements:
*2 Sites with unique URLs same layout and theme just different images (possible multi site?)
*Create simple theme with drop down navigation, theme based on sliced and prepared images that will be provided - (mock ups available contact to view)
*Custom membership fields required with need to migrate existing membership into new site (20K + records, have excel/CSV/SQL format)
*Need to generate "promotional email" with web coupon, date/time stamp, editable by admin staff (HTML and Text based)
*Opportunity for entering in new members manually by administrative staff
*Would like opportunity to use single membership database between sites
*Need to integrate google maps for each physical location ideally with Postal Code look up in member profile to find location nearest member
*Some customization of membership profile page required

Generally I have put in most of the requirements. There may have been something that i missed but either I can take care of these or we can talk more about it. I have a fair amount of experience with Drupal but do not have the time for this project. I can take care of some of these requirements if needed. Would like to find someone that would continue offering contract work moving forward I have many opportunities in the pipeline.

WTB Books!

I was just about to order the new Drupal 6 book from Packt and also the Drupal 5 Themes book when I thought, maybe someone in town is done with their old tattered manuals and wouldn't mind parting with them. Is there anyone in Vancouver willing to sell me their copy of those books and/or Drupal Pro Develpment? I'll wait and see, and if not, I'll happily order new copies online. And by the way, I prefer the old fashioned paper variety. :)

My List of Drupal Modules

Hey everyone, I just created a blog post highlighting all of the modules used on my personal website. I'd be interested in hearing some feedback on what everyone else uses. I think this is valuable to beginners and there were quite a few related questions at the last meetup.

Here's my list: http://tylorsherman.com/node/684

Module idea, looking for collaborators

Hi all,

I had an idea for a new drupal module and I'm wondering if anyone else likes the idea enough to discuss the work involved and perhaps work on it with me. Or someone may know if this already exists and can just point me to the right direction.

Module synopsis

A module that will export/import a filtered set of supported nodes, with the option to include attachments, comments and revisions. Essentially a node migration module.

Problem this solves

I often want to copy a live site, database and all, to a dev site where a group of people can add new information to the dev site. But while content is being added to the dev site the live site continues on with new comments and news added so it is difficult/impossible to just copy the dev database back to the live database.

Proposed solution

The node migration module would allow you to filter your nodes on your dev site by author, date created, base path, menu descendants. It would then generate a data file of the selected nodes (or possibly just a url, to deal with upload limitations of large data files in php) that could then be imported into the live site.

This could not support every type of node since it is not explicit what data needs to be collected to recreate the node. However, we could begin by supporting cck nodes with the generic field types and at the same time supply an api so modules can implement hooks to provide the database information that needs to be gathered and written for their particular node/field types.

Possible advanced features include: keeping track of new nids so that links in pages can be updated, comparing nodes that share the same path to generate a complete revision history for the node, copying over required content types, interactive updates to deal with potential conflicts, etc.

But the most important feature has to be stability since the whole point of creating a dev site is to not break your live site. This module is not very useful if it breaks sites.

If this sounds like a project you would be interested in working on, giving feedback to, or sponsoring, please just respond to this thread. If this thread gets active we'll move the conversation to a project page. I'm posting this here so that everyone is local, giving us the option to meet in person.

Thanks,
Steven

Senior Drupal Developer | Carrie & Danielle, Inc.

Carrie & Danielle, Inc. is a lifestyle media company built on the personal brand of its founders, Carrie McCarthy and Danielle LaPorte. Carrie and Danielle’s first book, Style Statement: Live By Your Own Design (Hachette/Filipacchi) went on sale in early April, is already an Amazon best-seller, and is supported by a major publicity campaign and North American book tour.

We’re building a social media site to complement the book and need an experienced and talented Senior Drupal Developer to join our team. This position is one of the most important hires we’ll make since you will have overall responsibility for the architecture of the site. We need someone with experience building successful large-scale consumer Internet sites, and who is able to build, lead and grow a development team for the long term.

It goes without saying but we’ll say it anyway that we’re all about agile development, usability and meeting deadlines rather than packing our application with unnecessary features.

Applicants should have a minimum of five years' web development experience, ideally including several successful Drupal projects.

We’re well funded by a highly respected group of angels who have backed many successful consumer Internet sites. It doesn't hurt that we're based in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, and are willing to relocate the right person. Competitive salary, benefits and stock-based compensation are all on offer.

To apply, please send resumes to dan at carrieanddanielle dot com, including detailed descriptions of your contribution to the websites and applications with which you’ve been involved.
