Selling online with Drupal e-Commerce

Selling Online with Drupal e-Commerce
by Michael Peacock
Pack Publishing, 2008, $39.99

Technology books are generally expected to be on the shelves shortly after major releases of a particular software and therefore do not receive the most thorough editing possible. They're also quite expensive considering they have a relatively short shelf life because they're only really in demand until the new version of the software is released. Given that this book delivers on both counts and exhaustively details the cheesy example of Doug's Dino store, it's still a worthy read.

Well, it won't do you much good to simply read it. This book steps the reader through the process of setting up a website to sell goods and/or services over the internet. The book tells the story of a web-developer/designer(you) that contracts with the owner of a physical store to set up a website to sell his products and services on-line.

In the first chapter, the author explains how to install Drupal 5.x and the e-Commerce module, the most recent versions of this e-business duo. If you are interested in Ubercart, e-Commerce's other Drupal competitor, you're reading the wrong book. Micheal does a fair job of pointing out the pitfalls of downloading and installing the software. I wished he had directed the reader to download all the modules that would be needed for later chapters even if they wouldn't be installed until later. There is no one place in the book you can find a list of all the modules you will need for a particular store implementation.

In the next couple of chapters, the author explains the basics of Drupal and planning the store including even legal requirements. In my experience, these chapters and the chapter on theming were really lacking. My experience with customers suggests that they usually want to start with how the site will look. Granted this book isn't about theming, but even considering that, the look and feel topics are really sparse. Customers relate their online experience to how they want their physical store to look. All this form following function jargon is something for the developer and designer to juggle, the owner wants pretty first. Another problem I have with these chapters relates to the decision not to use CCK and the image field to display the products in the catalog. Although he suggests later that it might be a good idea to use CCK, it seems that a product catalog might be a perfect application of this popular module, and would ease the administration of a dynamic e-store.

The chapter about users, roles, and permissions is a must. This chapter alone will save countless hours of head scratching, and could single-handedly save the book. Many of the ways that users, roles, and permissions and creative uses of the taxonomy module can be implemented will allow the user to use, create, and sell almost limitless types of products and services.

The next chapters direct the reader in set up the shopping cart and checkout functionality, including detailed explanations of taxes, shipping, and payment gateways. I would like to have learned more about secure checkout, and security in general, it seems like a pretty important topic to a store owner and his customers. A small section of one chapter was spent on the CiviCRM module, it should have been skipped or covered in much greater detail. In the last chapter on Marketing Your Business, the author provides an extensive list of ways to market one's business, but doesn't describe how Drupal could be used to automate the process, or even recommended other products for the job. I bet there are a number of things that Drupal can do to help promote one's business.

Bottom line: Selling online with Drupal e-Commerce is a great introduction to the process of setting up a Drupal website for an internet based business. The author does a great job pointing out places where your intuition can get you into trouble, and points you in the right direction to modules not included in be basic Drupal: e-Commerce installation, but if you are new to selling, period; require a knock-out store design, or need help advertising your site, you are going to need a few more books. To it's credit, it's not a book simply about Drupal, but leads the reader through the whole process and discusses all the processes and services a store-owner will need to set up his store. I can't give it a big thumbs up, but a worthy read none-the-less.

Florida Drupal Domains

I have purchased three domains for use as the Florida Drupal group sees fit.

DrupalFL.org
DrupalFlorida.org
DrupalGators.org

Currently they just redirect to groups.drupal.org/florida to give us slightly easier access to the content here. They also work well when advertising (hint .. hint :) ).

If the group would like to use these domains for any reason just let me know. Please discuss the use with the group in public. Use will not be granted for those that just contact me directly.

Go Drupalgators!

less than 1 year: 7

more than one year: 4

Thanks to Jay and MindComet for letting us use their facilities! If you have a need for Interactive Marketing, please check them out.

I (Mike Anello) gave a talk on Views 2 in Drupal 6 covering the changes from Views 1 as well as a tour of Views 2 and the new concepts and terminology. During the talk, I created a couple of new views with several displays utilizing some of the new functionality. You can download my presentation below.

Ryan Price gave a beginner's talk on CCK, giving examle of various uses of custom content types. During the talk, he created a podcast directory for http://www.orlandopodcasters.com/ utilizing the embedded media field, nodereference field (part of CCK), content taxonomy, and link field.

All Florida Drupal Meeting in Orlando - 21 June

Just thought I'd start a new event string for the Jun 21 meeting so people could sign up.

Our next meet-up will be on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 1 to 5 PM at MindComent's offices
in Altamonte Springs, Florida (Orlando area). This will be a 2-topic meeting with Ryan Price covering CCK and Mike Anello covering Views. We'll be covering these two topics using Drupal 6. Orginially, we were going to cover theming and Views, but we decided it made more sense to go with CCK and Views in the same day. The theming topic will be covered in July.

For those of you new to Drupal, CCK is the "content construction kit" - a module that allows site admins to create new "content types" for the web site. For example, a "car" content type might provide fields for "year", "make", "model", "color", etc. This allows the site admin much more flexibility in content management as well as display options. The Views module provides a super-flexible way for site admins to decide how lists of content are presented to the user.

Finally, we decided to kick off each meeting with a 20-minute quick question and answer session. Anyone can ask the group any question on any Drupal related topic providing the question can be asked and answered in a short period of time. If you can't make the meetup, feel free to ask the question in the comment section of this post.

18 People Attend May Meetup in Altamonte Springs

The second monthly meeting of the Florida Drupal group met on Saturday, May 17 at MindComent's offices in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Attendance was great, with 8 new people in addition to 10 who also attended the April meeting.

Joe Moraca gave a "getting started with Drupal" talk that covered everything from downloading the code from Drupal.org to transitioning from a development server to a production server. Some of the many topics touched on were:

Downloading Drupal

Resources on Drupal.org

Various versions of Drupal

Setting up LAMP stack on Windows/Mac/Linux

Creating new DB and DB user

Overview of Drupal core directories

Uncompressing and installing on your hard drive

Going through the Drupal installer

Clean URLs

Creating admin user

Admin section

Adding modules

Changing themes

Adding content

Moving site from development server to production server

Our next meet-up will be on Saturday, June 21, 2008 from 1 to 5 PM at MindComent's offices in Altamonte Springs, Florida. This will be a 2-topic meeting with Ryan Price covering CCK and myself (Mike Anello) covering Views.

So, setup has been daunting, but i am still determined

all day now, i have been trying to get everything "server side" setup in ubuntu, and have had absolutely no luck at all. first, i installed xampp for linux, which used to be Lampp in a previous relaese; it was horrible. there was no way to actually reconfigure apache, or redirect the localhost with it actively running. so then it was onto lullabot for some assistance. ah-ha, i found a video which was great. i uninstalled xampp and was prepared to follow along on a fresh setup. so i opened synaptic, installed apache, php5, mysql, etc. and all went great, or so i thought. i navigated to /var/www and in the apache folder there was no configuration file. so i double checked [just on the off chance that hidden files weren't visible] and made sure that it wasnt there, or in anyother dir. three uninstalls/reinstalls later it still wasn't happening. back to the net to find a solution, that works with ubuntu. i found drubuntu, a group located here that has a complete walkthrough on everything. awesome, right? yes and no. after getting all of the prelims done [eclipse, firefox plugins, etc] its time to setup apache and define databases. wouldnt you know that even following the instructions to the letter, there was still no httpd configuration file in the apache dir.

im stuck and i need some assistance. i have made steady progress all day, but this seems to be as far as i can get. does anyone else in the group use linux as their test server? if so any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

-Erik

Son of DrupalCon in Miami?

Since there's at least 6 of us that made it up to Boston's DrupalCon event, there's no better excuse to have a meetup to share the wealth with those that couldn't manage the trip.

The Knight Foundation played a very prominent role at DrupalCon, and Studio:Module started a Design Outreach program aimed at making Drupal more accessible to a broader user base, particularly in the creative field. Watch http://designfordrupal.org over the next few months for developments.

I propose a Thursday night at Novecento in Brickell or at Books and Books in the Gables.

Any takers?

Drupal training

This is to see what sort of interest there may be in the South Florida community for setting up training programs for Drupal in South Florida. Personally, I'd be interested in teaching a theming workshop and an introduction to Drupal for those of you just starting out.

If you're interested in setting up a workshop, please post to this thread. If you know someone that's interested that's just starting to explore Drupal, please forward this post or encourage them to join the Miami group.

Thanks!

Tampa Drupal Meeting

Now that Drupal 6 has been released, I thought I would suggest another local Tampa Drupal Meeting for Saturday, 1 March, from 3-5 p.m. at the Panera Bread in New Tampa. This location has easy access from the I-4, I-75, and the I-275.

I thought we could discuss any issues or problems we're having with Drupal 6, and/or our other Drupal projects. If you're having trouble with anything, post it here and we can all discuss it when we meet.

Everyone in the All Florida Drupal Group is invited, but I know it's a long drive for some. I'd really like to at least get out the local Drupalers in the Tampa Bay area.

The Panera Bread in New Tampa is on Bruce B. Downs Blvd, 2 lights North/East of the I-75. If you're coming on the I-75, take exit 270 onto Bruce B. Downs, and drive about 1 mile North/East, at the second stoplight turn left and make an immediate right into the parking lot. At the far side (in front of Circuit City) is Panera Bread. There is a Bennigan's next door if anyone wants to continue the conversation and change the coffee for beer.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=panera+bread,+33647&ie=...

BarCamp Orlando: April 5th & 6th, 2008

Saturday will be "developer day" and Sunday be "media day". I'm personally in charge of media day, but I want to tell you how great the first BarCamp Orlando was. There were almost 200 people packed into a restaurant here in Orlando, and despite rain and a crowded room, we had dozens of presentations and so many great connections were made.

This year we have an entire complex of venues: officially we have two of them reserved for the 8 hours of the conference, but the others will serve as the "hallway". Exciting times.

Video from the first BarCamp Orlando
http://barcamporlando.org/2007/10/17/mailing-list-video

We are looking for sponsors in a big way - the conference is currently planned for April 5th & 6th at the Wall Street Plaza in downtown Orlando. Geeks, drinks, live music, free lunch and free t-shirts, what more could you ask for? Sponsorships are sort of closed after March 21.

Drupal Developer | Orlando Fringe Festival

The Orlando Fringe Festival is a non-profit theatre festival with some outstanding principles, and I really love these guys. I even helped them get their web site onto a CMS from static pages this year, but now I have run out of time.

We've gotten started setting up a system whereby people producing a show for the Fringe will be able to enter in their production's information themselves, saving the Festival staff hundreds of man-hours, and releasing them from some liability, because now 80 people can each make one mistake instead of one person making 80 mistakes. Hooray Drupal.

They need someone to help them finish up development of this system and maintain it through festival time in May.

The pay is very low - but the job is worth it.

Contact < email AT markbaratelli.com > if you're interested.

Tampa Drupal Meeting

I guess the All Florida Drupal Meeting in Gainesville didn't get off the ground, so I thought I would suggest a local Tampa Drupal Meeting for Saturday, 1 December from 3-5 p.m. at the Panera Bread in New Tampa. This location has easy access from the I-4, I-75, and the I-275.

Everyone in the All Florida Drupal Group is invited, but I know it's a long drive for some. I'd really like to at least get out the local Drupalers in the Tampa area.

This Panera Bread does have wireless internet, and I suggest everyone bringing their laptops, so we can look at each others Drupal sites, and ask "how'd you do that?".

The Panera Bread in New Tampa is on Bruce B. Downs Blvd, 2 lights North/East of the I-75. If you're coming on the I-75, take exit 270 onto Bruce B.
Florida Creatives Happy Hour

A few things you should check out if you're in/near Orlando.

First, Central Florida PHP and second Florida Creatives.

I organize Florida Creatives, and we have a large number of web developers and designers attend each month. Our next Happy Hour will be at the Crooked Bayou, across the street from the Orlando Library. Our meetings are always 3rd Mondays of the month in the same place.

Another cool group is Mike Girouard's CFPHP. He has his meetings at DeVry University @ Millenia on select Saturdays once a month. This event could use a few more people. I'd love to have a Drupal User's Group, but if we can't make a big enough PHP group, Drupal should be the second priority.

The next CFPHP is titled "Bring Your Own Database" and is intended to help PHP programmers with database normalization. It is Saturday, October 27th from 3-5PM. Check CFPHP.org for more info and future dates.

We need a place -- on campus somewhere? maybe a library meeting room? Is there anyone in Gainesville who can help set this up?

We need a date --- How about Oct 20th

We need an agenda -- we should have some folks fresh from DrupalCon in Spain!!!

We need lots of marketing / PR

We need people to signup so other people know we will have a "crowd"

Please add your name and what you can do to this page (just showing up is good!!!)

Joe Moraca will attend any Saturday in Oct

Mike Anello (ultimike) will attend any Saturday in October as well. I'd be willing to present some of the custom Drupal modules I've been building for clients in the recent months.

Steve Lecarpentier will show up on Oct 20th.

Jose Rey CAN show up on Oct 20th in the afternoon or evening.

Need PHP help

I'm currently working on a site for a client. I do my work for him in trade for credit against what he sells so no money is exchanged.
I'm terrible with PHP (read, I know nothing about it). I could really use some help with a request he made of me and was hoping someone here might volunteer some time. I'd be glad to pass some credit along to you for your time if you like inverts of any sort.

The site in question is http://www.tarantulaspiders.com and if you click on the store link you'll see a page that's a table view. What I need is to re-layout the table so it looks like http://www.technospider.com/~david/views/

IE - 2 columns 3 rows. Top row has name, price. Middle row spans both columns and houses body. Bottom row has Add to cart/Out of stock in second column.

Thanks,
David
o Short presentations about what kind of Drupal work is going on in Florida and code we've contributed.
o Mike Anello - "ultimike" would be willing to do a quick run-through about some of the OSCMS sessions he attended.
o Maybe even some introductions/lightning talks just to show off what we've done with Drupal.
o Maybe a couple of hours of informal presentations (four 30 minute presentations?)
o then some time afterwards for even more informal mini-hackfest?

Florida-based Drupal consultants?

Hello there, I'm one of the newer members of this group, but I've been developing Drupal sites for over a year now. I'm based in Merritt Island (near the Space Center) and I have some experience in writing custom modules, but I'm getting ready to start a new phase of a project where I think I need some help. Hopefully there is another Florida-based Drupal developer out there who can help.

I'm putting together a proposal for a client that will include some customizations to both the Views module and the Ecommerce module. It isn't necessary for you to have experience with both - I don't mind using a different person for each task.

Online membership renewal: the client has members that pay a yearly fee to be a full member. They would like to provide an online method of payment for their members during the site registration process. In addition, there are a couple of other ecommerce processes they'd like to incorporate/customize. From my research, the ecommerce module will handle most of the requirements, but some customization will be required.

Zip code proximity searches: the client has several node types (projects, products, agents) that all have zip code location data attached. They would like the user to be able to enter a zip code and find nodes and certain members that are within X miles. The Location module already does most of this, but we'll need to tweak the UI a bit to meet the requirements. Currently, the Views module handles the searching for these nodes, by my client would like the zip code search to be integrate with the other (Views) filters.

I have not yet submitted the proposal for these tasks, but they are an ongoing client of mine (I recently completed phase 1 of the site) and don't anticipate any competition for the work. Therefore, your compensation will be added to the proposal.

Let me know if anyone is interested!

Also - would anybody be interested in a Florida Drupal meetup? Have there been any? I'm hoping to go out to Drupalcon at the OSCMS Summit (http://www.oscms-summit.org/) in CA next month - is anyone else from Florida going?

Thanks in advance,
-mike

... that encouraged me to sign up... ;-) Free beer works even better...

You're now up to #9 and counting... Perhaps I should have waited to join so that I could have been Joe's "magic number" 10... I missed the grand prize, didn't I?!?!

By way of introduction, my name is Glenn and I'm in the metro-Orlando (more specifically Disney) area. I'm new to Drupal - <2 months, though I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be able to continue using that excuse - any guidelines on how long one can get away with noobie questions ?? ;-)

CivicActions

Jonathan invited me to this group, so you're now up to, .... let me use both hands ... 7 ... no 8 members. Florida isn't exactly the hot-bed of Drupal development, but here we are!

eIntroductions... I have been playing around with Drupal for almost 18 months, having first learned about it at Democracy Fest 2005. I attempted to start my own company using Drupal as a platform, and when that didn't work I went to work for CivicActions. Jonathan and I met in Amsterdam last month at a CivicActions company meeting.

CivicActions is a really cool professional services development firm that uses Drupal to build websites for our clients. They are a great group of people that I'm excited to be a part of, with wonderful values and a good company philosophy. We are a bunch of idealists and our company tagline is "saving the world one node at a time!". Jonathan's working on some really cool stuff right now, that I'll let him share with you. He went to DrupalCon in Brussels and (I believe) gave a presentation there. I received my Drupal CVS credentials a couple of months ago and have contributed a couple of simple Drupal modules.
