Multi-sites with multi-version of Drupal.

An idea was popped in my mind when I was in bed. Is it worth using multi-sites concept with multi-version of Drupal? Like 5.x and 6.x, both share some user related tables and have different db for rest. This is just like the interface we have for http://api.drupal.org. As much as our
hypothetical multi-version concerns, we can provides some apparent difference related to working of both the versions, new features, etc.
I have your say about is it worth thinking in this way?

Thank you.

Which Session Proposals would you like to see in Drupal Camp India if you could pick only 3?

Drupal Camp India - http://drupalcamp08.drupalindia.in is looking for session proposal ideas.

There are 3 parallel tracks (Marketing - Why Drupal, Drupal for Professionals, Drupal for Students).

Your answer could be in format of "Session" (Track) and you are free to recommend all 3 options in the same track if you wish.

E.g

1) "Session A" (MKTG)
2) "Session B" (PRO)
3) "Session C" (STUDENT)

What is Indian / Asian Drupal Community looking for in Drupal Camp?

Japanese SIs using Drupal

As background, I speak Japanese and have lived in Japan for a total of four years in the past. In my past career, I've worked pretty closely in building software businesses in Japan, mostly by working closely with the large systems integrators like NEC, Hitachi, and Fujitsu.

Today I met with a representative of NEC today and gave him a briefing on Drupal and Acquia. He was in the US gathering information on interesting Web 2.0 companies and technologies. NEC is one of the top systems integrators in the Japanese market. They develop their own application stack and offer solutions on top of it to the largest clients in Japan. We had a lot of success with Flex in Japan as a direct result of their early investment in helping us take the technology to market.

We had a good introductory discussion, but I quickly realized how little I know about Drupal adoption in Japan. It would be great to hear from some of the other folks here about what they are seeing in terms of Drupal usage in Japan. I found drupal.jp and it seems like there is some reasonable level of activity, but not as much as disproportionately less given Japan's large market size.

Are any large companies in Japan using Drupal? Is the community well organized and functioning? Are there any Drupal books in Japanese?

I'll be posing some of these same questions in the drupal.jp forums, but figured it might be interesting to start here. Please help me get up to speed.

The Drupal Asia Pacific Conference is a major event to gather Drupalers to learn, discuss and advance Drupal. All attendees will be provided free entry to the CeBIT expo (20th - 22nd) and offered discounted tickets to the Open CeBIT conference. We will also be hosting a booth as part of the CeBIT Exhibition to educate and promote Drupal to businesses, government, and individual attendees of the exhibition. </strike><strike>

Drupalcon 2008 - Boston

Hey guys,

I'm sure everyone's already heard about the upcoming Drupal conference, but just in case.

DrupalCon 2008 will be in Boston from March 3rd - 6th. It should be a fantastic opportunity to connect with and learn from Drupalers all over the world.

http://boston2008.drupalcon.com

I'll be going, and I'll bring back notes and whatever else I can, especially as it relates to Drupal in Asia.

It looks like Jacob Redding (Beijing Drupal group) will be doing a presentation on Drupal in China.

Are any of you guys planning on going? If so, it'd be neat to hook up for a beer while there.

Notes on Jan 27th Meetup in Kyoto

Mark and Teru, it was great to meet up with you guys and down some Irish beer! Teru, thanks so much for coming all the way out from Mie! Drupalace, really glad we were able to hook up online.

A quick recap on last night for those who weren't able to make it:

We started off with a bit of an adventure. The pub didn't actually open until 6pm. (Again, sorry about that guys! I should have confirmed the opening time). So we hung out at a nearby pub until 6pm and then headed over to McLoughlin's. When we got there though, we discovered it was still closed. The owners were inside, but had decided not to open the pub as one of the taps (or something) exploded and there was liquid of some sort all over the kitchen. We ended up at another Irish pub nearby which worked out fine & they had live music as well.

Basically, we just spent the time chatting, getting to know each other, and sharing a bit about what we're doing with Drupal.

Teru was able to fill us in a bit on the Japanese translations of Drupal and share his thoughts on why Drupal does not currently have a strong presence in Japan.

There are currently two different Japanese translations of Drupal. If I remember correctly, they are:

http://drupal-jbox.net/

http://drupal.jp

Drupal is currently not well known in Japan, especially compared with Xoops (a competing CMS) and WordPress (the blogging tool).

Teru said the reason for this from what he can see is the lack of Japanese documentation and support as well as a dearth of Japanese-translated-modules.

This has the potential to change dramatically, however, with the introduction of Drupal 6, which brings some much needed localization and internationalization improvements that should make it much easier to translate Drupal core, 3rd party modules, and user content.

Here's a screencast I found by Greg Knaddison (greggles) that highlights the upcoming changes.

http://www.masteringdrupal.com/screencast/new-i18n-l10n-features-drupal-...

ok, i'm off for now

Druplicon for Japan Drupal Users Group

Hello to all the guys there in my Asian neighbor, Japan!

I'm wondering, what would your Druplicon look like?

I'm looking for an item/artifact/symbol that would best visualize Drupal and Japan together.

This would be a good reference for a Japanese Druplicon for you.

Thanks and Regards,

I thought it might be helpful to start collecting a list of Japan-based as well as Japanese Drupal sites.
These are the ones I know of so far. Please add to the list :-)!

Drupal Community related sites
1st Meetup

Hey guys,

Looks like there's interest in a meet-up, so let's see if we can't get one rolling.

Where would be the best place to do it?

Teru, you're in Mie-ken right? Jon, you're in Okinawa, yeah?
Robert and Marc, sounds like you guys are both abroad.
Drupalace, whereabouts do you live?

I'm in Shiga. markDrupal is in Shiga as well.

Since we're scattered, a single meetup won't work for everyone unfortunately, but as this group grows, I hope we can get meetups happening in different locations around the country.

So, for a first meetup, how many of you would be able to come to a meet-up in Kyoto?

Shall we aim to do one mid-late January?

Also, what days work best for you guys? My schedule's completely flexible, but I'm guessing weekends work better for others.

I'll just throw some dates out there:

Friday, January 18th
Saturday, January 19th
Friday, January 25th
Saturday, January 26th

would any of these work for people?

ok. Talk to you guys soon!

Introductions

Hey everyone,

5 subscribers so far. A good start. I started this group with a few things in mind. I wanted to find out who else is working with Drupal in Japan (there don't seem to be that many of us at the moment, but that will change hopefully :-)!) and create a space where we can connect, share ideas, discuss all things Drupal in a Japan/Asia context, and maybe even organize an occasional meet up at a pub to chat or even hack. Finally, I'm interested in seeing Drupal get traction and gain mind-share in Japan.

Let's kick things off with some introductions.

My name is Stein. I live in the Kansai area of Japan and have worked here as an English teacher for 6 years. I've been building and running websites in my free time to support the local communities of foreign English teachers where I live. It's been my passion since I arrived in Japan, and this past August I left teaching to turn that passion into a business and pursue it full-time.

I discovered Drupal after a long period (about 4 1/2 years) of wandering through the CMS wilderness. I love it. Fantastic framework, clean code, clear API, and growing community.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Stein
