Design in the Browser: Use CSS to Stop Lying to Ourselves and Our Clients

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Designing web pages as static images is usually a time-consuming exercise and produces a lie we tell ourselves and our clients. We're not designing pictures of websites, so why ask clients to sign off on one? Web work is dynamic, and needs to be seen and evaluated as early and often as possible in many browsers.

By designing in the browser we're able to solve a number of issues we face as people who make and sell web sites. Our mockups behave like web pages because they are web pages. We don't accidentally design features that are impossible to code. Any troublesome css technique will be discovered and addressed at the beginning of a project rather than in it's final days. And maybe most importantly, clients are never asked to sign off on a static facsimile of a web site that we all know will be at least slightly different from the final site we deliver.

Maybe this time I'll actually get to see your session!

Love to hear about high-quality prototyping...

Not clear whether that's exactly what this will include, but the statement, "Our mockups behave like web pages because they are web pages," suggests that may be part of what this will include. I also see a bit more info about this on your homepage.

Anything that makes it easier to get good feedback early-on from other people involved in making a good idea for a site become a good site is very welcome. Got my attention, I hope that this is scheduled at a time when I can see it, and, if it's not, that there's good material on this.

To date I've been interested in getting feedback re whether a service, psd2cssonline is a useful way to rapidly build high-quality prototypes (and maybe much more for simpler sites).

Note: No financial interest in psd2cssonline - I'm not touting here.

yes, this is essentially

yes, this is essentially about prototyping. By doing relying a lot less on photoshop and using CSS as a creative tool you can iterate much faster and react to design notes from the client and to markup changes introduced by new features.
