Documentation Sprint: DC Doc Love

Let's get together and whip up some Doc Love. We'll meet for 3 hours at the DC Public Library to work on Drupal and then, if folks are interested, we can go out for food and drinks after. We have a medium meeting room (A-9) reserved from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sat. November 8. (For directions to the room, see below in the Where? section.)

Everyone can feel free to work on whatever they like, for as long as they like. If you only want to stop by for half an hour or the whole time, it's up to you. I will be around to give guidance, give people doc rights if they need them and generally be around to answer questions for the whole time. I'll also bring some drinks and munchies but if you have anything in particular you want to gnosh on, feel free to bring it.

Oh and if anyone feels like designing up come cool Drupal Doc Love graphics, I'd be a very happy camper. ;-)

What will we do?

We will run the gamut and have tasks for everyone from total newbie to expert hacker. Here is an idea of the kinds of things to do:
- Copy-editing: good old-fashioned cleanup
- Basic read-through reviews: great for newbies to learn and help at the same time
- Adding screenshots: find places where images would help and get them added to the page
- Rolling comments: adding information form comments back into the parent page
- Code review: check for standards compliance and security on code samples
- Testing: for both code and tutorials/howtos - do they actually work?
- Version upgrades: admin UI pages as well as code
- Issue queue maintenance: see if issues are still valid, review drafts, mark duplicates, etc.
- Review and help code work on docs-related contrib modules (e.g. book access, term message, revision moderation modules)

Where?

We are meeting at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library. This is the central DC public library, right in the middle of downtown, near both the Gallery Place and Metro Center metro stops. There is also free parking.

901 G Street, NW
Washington, DC 20001
Map

We will be in meeting room A-9. This is one floor down from the main entrance.
If you enter through the garage: go up the stairs to Level A and walk through two sets of double doors. A-9 will be in front of you to the right.
If you enter from the main entrance: there is an elevator just inside the security to the right (under the Green MLK portrait). Take the elevator down to A. When you get off you are in a weird lobby area that opens onto A-2. Walk all the way through A-2 and out the other door. A-9 will be on your right.

DC Doc sprint

As some of you may know, I've been neck-deep in Drupal's Doc team work. The doc sprints that we have had at the last two Drupalcons have been a ton of fun and very productive. I'd like to run a local sprint down in DC sometime before the end of the year. The basic idea that I am thinking right now is to find a location that will let us camp out with wifi for about 4-6 hours on a weekend. I'd be there the entire time but others could just drop by as they had time. I'd be there to help folks get situated, find docs tasks that they find interesting and generally answer questions.

I don't have a date/venue yet. This post is for two purposes right now:
1) gauge the interest to get a sense of the size of venue to find
2) see if anyone has space they would donate or recommendations of where we could go (I'm assuming in the 10-20 people range right now)

In terms of venue needs, the basic requirements would be chairs and tables/desks for people to work comfortably and free wifi access. I'd also like to be able to bring in snacks and drinks. Something that is easily accessible on metro would be great. That's about it really.

Note that you don't need to know how to write well to help with docs. We have tons of things that need help that don't involved writing at all. We even have coding work we need, so devs can play too. ;-) People who are new to Drupal or do not speak English as their first language are particularly valuable and highly encouraged.

So, please feel free to discuss, volunteer or ask questions to help me get a better sense of what to plan. This'll be my first time planning a stand-alone sprint like this so all thoughts and ideas are welcome. :-)

Possible places for meetups?

While I setup the Drupal Maryland group, I have not taken an active role to ensure the group continues to grow and bring in more members. Lack of time has been a major factor.

On to the subject at hand though, I made a few calls and found that Panera Bread has a "first come, first serve" basis for seating for all Maryland stores. We would be unable to use a projector, however a monitor is fine provided someone wants to bring a flat screen or something portable. In my experience with Panera, their Wi-Fi has not had any issues. One thing I do like about Panera is their free refills on coffee and sodas. The Bowie Town Center location is a reasonable size. Hours are 6AM-9PM Monday-Saturday and 7AM-8PM Sunday.

Any others who have suggestions on places to meet, please reply.

Baltimore Drupal Meetup

UPDATE: I have moved the venue to Red Emma's

Original description, with updated address, below:
I will be happy to open my home again for a Drupal meetup in September. For future dates, if someone wants to take the reigns at a more public location, that would be great. I want to make sure we're not on the same night as a DC meetup, as some Baltimore folks are known to go to those. DC meetups have tended to happen on a Monday or Tuesday... so I've picked a Wednesday, September 17. Come one, come all. As before, I'll order Indian, and ask for a $4 contribution if you signal you'd like to share some. Let me know in your response, so I know how much food to order.

Address:
Red Emma's
800 St. Paul St.
Baltimore, MD 21202
Freelance Drupal help | Village Commons Community Center

An old client of mine, Village Commons Community Center (VCCC), in Gambrills, MD is looking for some freelance help on the site. They are a small local organization that rents out community space for events. It was one of the first Drupal sites I ever built and is still on 4.7. They are looking for someone to do an upgrade as well as do some functional tweaks to the site. Ideally, they can develop a relationship with someone so as they need things in the future they will have a reliable person who knows the site to step in. The would prefer someone who is in the DC/Baltimore area but they are definitely willing to work with folks that work remotely too.

The meat of the site is running off Events, Actions and Workflow modules along with a custom reservation module. It was the second module I ever wrote and, especially with an upgrade, chances are it will just need to be rewritten altogether. It was a long time ago so I'm fuzzy on the details but it may even be possible to largely replace it with CCK.

If interested, please contact me through my g.d.o contact form and I'll get you in touch with them. Thanks!

Elevatid needs a developer to integrate Drupal with an existing website. The site is currently under development and has been coded with XHTML & CSS. We need a CMS developer who knows their stuff. There is another project directly after this.

Drupal Baltimore launch

The Maryland Group has been mighty quiet...
Would be great to meet Drupalers from Baltimore/Annapolis/Maryland area.

Beginners, intermediates, experts, and ninjas, all welcome.

I can set up a screen projector in my home, and order Indian Food from Tamber's. (My housemate works there, but no discount.;)

If we get a Baltimore group off the ground, we can try to organize future gatherings at local restaurants, if anyone has the time or inclination to do that.

I can accommodate up to 22 people.
Address:
3 4 4 3 G u i l f o r d T e r ,
Baltimore, MD 2 1 2 1 8

$8 donation if you eat, or sponsor welcome.

I will change the date if there turns out to be a DC meetup the same night. (That's why I'm posting to DC group, as well. Those seem to be happening mostly on Wednesdays, from what I can tell.)

I'll be fresh from Lullabot training, the week before.
