User group meeting

Hey everyone,

Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (July 14) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting.

It's an extra information-rich meeting with three awesome presentations on the agenda:

1. "To Cloud or Not to Cloud: That is the Drupal Question" presented by Narayan Newton

In this presentation, Narayan will break down some of the performance issues involved in determining whether to use a cloud provider like Amazon EC2 or Rackspace.... or whether it makes more sense to maintain your own data center hardware. He'll also explode some of the biggest myths about cloud computing (including the myth that it's good for everyone). He'll also offer some possible solutions to the biggest cloud computing obstacles related to Drupal. It's a great opportunity to learn from one of the Drupal community's true infrastructure and scalability experts: Narayan has served as Drupal.org's database administrator, helped design Acquia's Amazon EC2 high-availability hosting platform, and consulted for many of the top Drupal companies.

2. "Git for Drupal (Part I, Git Fundamentals)" presented by Michael Schwern

With Drupal.org switching from CVS to git, now is the time to embrace version control in your projects and become a power git user. In this presentation, local git expert Michael Schwern will take you through the fundamentals of using git as a single developer or as part of a larger group--including how to create repositories, add files, clone, commit, fork, branch, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations that other projects don’t, he'll cover the most important best practices (such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules, cleanly upgrading your projects, and merging in your local patches). This presentation, focusing on the basics, is Part I of a two-part series. In Part II of the presentation at our August meeting, Michael will discuss more advanced git topics. Through it all, we’ll see how the apparent complexity of git’s command set hides an underlying simplicity and elegance of implementation. If you ever thought about using version control or git in particular, but thought it was too difficult to learn, you don't want to miss this presentation!

3. "Coder Upgrade Power Demo" presented by Jon Duell

Need to upgrade a module to Drupal 7? Jon will show you how to do it more efficiently and effectively using the Coder Upgrade module. As an active contributor to Coder Upgrade, he'll show you how you can use the module to automatically convert code in your Drupal 6 module to Drupal 7 (plus how the module can provide you with a list of further to-dos, helpful debug information, and a log of changes made). To illustrate this, he'll do a live Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 conversion of the Mailchimp module that we featured in June's meeting, revealing the strengths of the Coder Upgrade module and its current limitations. Learn why getting up and running in Drupal 7 isn't as daunting as you think!

Finally, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, July 14
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks and conversation!)
Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

It promises to be one of our best meetings ever... you don't want to miss it!

See you there,
Ben
