Seattle Consultants and Companies List

I thought it might be useful if we created a list of Seattle-area companies and individuals who do Drupal projects for clients. The idea would be that the list could be viewed by potential clients, who might not want to make an account and post a job, and also that other Seattle Drupal User Group members could use the list to find people to refer clients to or help them on projects. It will also give the group members an idea of what type of Drupal expertise we have available locally.

Due to history tracking issues with the Wiki setup on groups.drupal.org, I think the best way to make this list is to have anyone who would like to be listed reply to this post. Suggested information to include:

Your name and/or company name

Contact information and/or web site

A short blurb about your level of expertise

What you or your company does, related to Drupal -- e.g. start-to-finish site creation, theme development, module development, content creation, graphic design, etc.

If you are not local to the Seattle/King County Metro Area please DO NOT add yourself to this list

Marketplace for Module Development and Improvement– pooling resources of developers

I'm glad Darren Oh has got a solid proposal for this group. I would suggest that the most needed aspect of a Drupal marketplace would be a way for individual Drupal users and Drupal shops – especially smaller shops – to pool resources to fund specific module development.

User dahacouk called for more structure and a funding model to make the quality of contributed modules the best they can be.

To quote from my endorsement and proposal:

I applaud Walt's work in promoting projects needed financing and projects needing developers, and I see this idea as a way to build on it.

Letting people put money up for specific needs will give people who have that fabled itch to scratch – but without the time or Drupal experience to do it themselves – actually do something by putting money behind their words, "I want this feature / bug fix / functionality / module".

The Drupal Association could hold the money (and use interest off it to pay overhead) until the financed improvement is made

In the vast majority of cases the money would go to a developer or developers at the independent approval of the people who put up the money initially. (It would have to go to people who signed up to work on the request, to avoid someone redirecting the cash to a cousin at the last second.) Some appointed board (or democratic sample) could make a quick decision (including to have Drupal Association keep the money, or have the dispting parties split the difference) in the minority of cases where disagreements arise.

If not enough money is raised or work isn't done for some other reason, the Drupal Association can offer to refund it at a certain point-- but most people will re-assign it to another project, rather than cashing out.

This should be integrated into Drupal.org as much as possible, as in the issue queue and projects' pages. Two Summer of Code projects will be working in this area, Project quality metrics system and Extend Case Tracker Module, so now is a good opportunity to work in this area.

The same system can be used to support needed core changes, of course, although in this case its more likely to take the form of Dries or someone else with a bit of core developer cred pointing to an issue, saying this needs support, and letting us freeloaders give back. Also, people could make general donations at any time which some Drupal Association appointed group (or maybe someday a broad democratic vote) could direct.

It looks like this would have to start independently and prove itself before being integrated with Drupal.org or the Drupal Association. I'm part of a nonprofit (pending 510c3 application) which could probably provide fiscal sponsorship for such a venture. I think it's important that it be under nonprofit rather than for-profit aegis.

Agaric would love to hear feedback and especially interest.

~ ben, member, Agaric Design Collective

Let's start!

If this project gets finished, it will provide a tremendous boost to Drupal development. Is anyone working on an actual site yet? Has any funding been pledged? I'm ready to start working on it. This is an invitation for anyone who is doing actual work on the project to join me (or let me join you). Edit this page to include what you intend to do.

I want to create a site with the following functions:

Rating and history for developers and sponsors

Developers may rate other developers for various skills. Higher rated developers may give higher ratings. Sponsors may rate developers' work on specific projects and developers may rate sponsors.

Bidding process

Either developers or sponsors may post a project. Developers may bid for the project individually or in teams. Bidding may be open to everyone or restricted to particular members. There is no limit to the number of sponsors who may contribute to a project.

Contract negotiation

Each contract will include project requirements, terms (length of time developer has to produce, how long the sponsor has to evaluate the developer's work, conditions under which sponsor may re-open bidding on uncompleted projects), and how to determine if terms have been met.

Escrow service

Money contributed by sponsors will be deposited for safekeeping until the job is done. The site will keep a percentage of the deposited funds and pay the rest to the developers.

Dispute mediation

In case of disputes, a mediator elected by site members will help the parties come to an agreement. If agreement is not possible, a decision will be made by a neutral arbitration panel. Developers and sponsors agree to use the dispute mediation arrangement of the site.

Hand on!! small budget available on VISiYES.eu
Virtual and Integrated Support for innovative Young Entrepreneurs & Start-ups (sustainable, exploitable fair-open market). VISiYES constructs a comprehensive set of ‘blended-learning’ business supportive info-space applying the ease of use of the Internet to help young entrepreneurs and micro enterprises to identify gaps in their business knowledge addressed these with a 'development plan' that is both relevant and achievable.
Fair-Open-Marketplace for Learning without lessons simultaneously to work, cooperate and trade

Deliver and acredite curriculum

deliver an innovative curriculum for the informal, formal & accredited entrepreneurship education, tailored to e-tutoring, implementing for the first time Negotiated work-Based/Mobile Learning methodology within a trans-European comprehensive virtual & integrated blended e-learning environment based on Drupal.

Anyone Media Temple Grid Server Hosting?

I was curious if anyone has this host, I was curious as to if it's worth paying for the service or not. I notice they have one click installs of drupal. I currently have dreamhost which is a good host but the Grid Service media temple provides is quite inticing espically considering it isn't a whole lot more than what I pay for dreamhost.

Open4Business, CONSEN coop join efforts towards a Fair Drupal-OS-IST World Market

Dear Jenny, Fouad and all,
CONSEN want to contribute Towards a:
- Drupal and Open-Source Multidisciplinary World Task-force Organisation and Fair Marketplace" (WORG).
- Establish research technical and commercial project and services around Drupal - OS/IST- at world scope (iFOSS, FOSSP, CONSEN coop SCE, ....)
- A fair market and business with legal and internal rules. i.e. portion of the income, say 2%-5% - our experience is better 1/6 at this stage - would go as a commission to the O4B project administrative cost, join services, promotion, etc sustaining the organization, out of every project that is commissioned or completed via this website.
- Open-Source Supportive Marketplace.
- An online marketplace (ecommerce is feasible?)
- An online commercial and community multidisciplinary forum related to services and support around Drupal, Open-Source and in general Information Society Technologies.
- An online organization to maintain and manage the accounting, legal, public relationships, certifications, guarantees, taxes, etc. (Are Drupal ERP, CRM and Groupware modules enough?)
- A Board of Directors (BoD of President, Vice-President and Secretary) to manage the internal administration and coordinate the different organizations. Minimum three work-meeting yearly.
- At this MarketPlace where Drupal Service Buyers can post projects for Drupal Service Providers to Bid on, the MarketPlace Organization provide financial, technical and Quality guarantees if it is required by the client or the provider.
- The WORG support and fund the development of the required modules and Themes
- The WORG transfer all the knowledge and project to the Drupal and OS community
- The WORG promote Service Provider Blogs, Service Provider Tutorials Center, and other related to marketing, training and certification and quality,
- The WORG get sponsors and Mecenas
- The WORG is based on a Consortium Agreement of Organizations in a non-profit and fair movement aim

We would like to invite you to know a bit more this concept and the actual status on http://O4B.org
We encourage you to consider this invitation - following our initial and mutual approach - http://CONSEN.info/Approach and sign a pre-agreement (LoIC) in order to
1. build the WORG where CONSEN coop wants to be a partner transferring the CONSEN grouping experience, proposed internal rules and operative process with iFOSS, FOSSP, .... and Drupal Association .... and a short number of representative organizations.
OR/AND
2. join - as Member Associated - to CONSEN coop SCE (European Cooperative Society) legal, formed, registered, available, open and full operative working in Europe before April.
CONSEN coop can support the cooperant - independent professionals, companies and organizations - taxes and accounting at EU level - 27 countries and contract co-funded projects with the EC in the next FP7.
Drupal/PHP dev(s): contract and/or permanent hire: still looking! 1.22.07

Seeking Drupal Assassin(s)

Seeking professional experienced web developers (two) who are fluent in all aspects of development, and project management. Candidates must have a solid grasp of PHP 4/5, SQL, CSS, (x)HTML, JS, OOP, and wait for it... Drupal. On the Drupal note, you should be fluent in CCK, views, events, module development, and the forms API with a proven track record in all of these areas.

We are a firm growing like crazy just 25 minutes down valley from Aspen. We have roughly 4-6 months of solid contract work, though we would be quite happy to offer full time positions to the right candidates.

This role is primarily that of development with minimal client interaction for the time being. Though of course, you are a like a swiss army knife, capable of wooing a surly client back into shape should the need arise.

Long range, again, we would like to permanently hire someone.

About us:

We are located in the Aspen valley, close to Snowmass, Aspen, some of the best climbing (Rifle), single track, and fishing around. We currently are carrying a minimum of 30 websites at any one time. Most of us are techies and easy going mountain folk, who climb, snowboard, ski, hike, bike, fish, etc. We work to live here and quality of life is key for this bunch. There are currently 6 full time developers here with a total staff of 20, with sales over 1.5 million/year.

If you are interested in either contract or full time work, please send a resume to: sturok@bluetent.com.
Please include a ton of links, references, and anything else you think might convince me to hire you.

Required skills:

2 years developing in PHP 4/5.
Solid CSS, (x)HTML, XML, JS.
Fluent in SQL, experience in MySQL a must, vast experience in PostGres for major brownie points.
Drupal fluency in: setup, customization, CCK, views, events, OG, module creation, and the forms API.
Solid oral and written communication skills / ability to communicate with clients and staff.
Accountability is key, as is responsiveness.
Flexible, problem solving mindset and approach to challenging problems.
Ability to accurately track, detail, and estimate a given task.

Bonus points:

Managing a variety of projects from A-Z of various magnitudes.
Experience in the vacation vertical.
Experience in MLS systems.
Linux guru.

Compensation:

We are open to contract, or a full time salaried position. Hourly rate, or salary will be based on experience.
Salaried positions include health stipend, paid vacation days and holidays, season pass discount, and a fun and challenging work environment working with some of the coolest cats in the valley.

Thanks for you time,

John

Drupal Shop Talk Conference Call

A few months ago we had a few calls where representatives of Drupal
shops and independent developers got together to.... talk shop.

Well, after a summer hiatus (and maybe spring too actually), we are
going to try it again.

Come one, come all
12 noon Pacific Time
Tuesday October 10
(641) 297-4600
776614 #

_The call will be recorded and the recording will be posted for all to
listen to.

As in the past, the call is informal and will last 60 to 90 minutes. We
will try to take an agenda (via this email list) before the call starts.

Suggested agenda topics include:
module development, drupal developer training strategies, big project
showcase, etc... Shop Talk.

Goal/Topic of Marketplace Group?

Neither the group description nor the posts clearly state what's the point of this group. I am reading pages and pages and pages of words but I don't get a clue what is tried to achieve here.

Let's start with a few simple questions:

Why "Marketplace" - Is one able to sell and buy products there?

Where is this marketplace?

Where and what is the connection to Drupal?

Who can take part on that marketplace?

If there are participation fees, why?

How do Drupal developers benefit from that marketplace?

Why don't you use "Drupal service providers" forums at Drupal.org?

Answer short, in note form. If you prefer lists for that, use list bullets.

Stay on focus and answer to the question. Add details and extensions (if badly needed) after all answers.

Looking forward to any (hopefully clear & short) answers,
Is the marketplace group in need of CPR?

Judging from the latest (cross)posts, I'd say interest in this particular group seems to be waning.

Also, I've seen nothing of general relevance occurring over at http://citizenagency.com/.

I know it's difficult to get any sort of momentum behind an idea, however good it may be.

As I understand it, the motivation behind the Marketplace group is to unite demand for website construction (featuring Drupal) with small groups of people with the necessary skillset to fulfill a given instance of this demand.

My own personal, selfish goal in participating in this group is to hook up with one or more of: web designer, graphic artist, (drupl saavy) program manager to form a Drupal supergroup (what if Jones, Page, Plant and Bonham had been web developers!). I believe there are others out there with similar goals.

So where do we start?

NYC in need of a Drupal Consultant....

From my inbox to yours...

Subject: drupal consultant?
Date: August 9, 2006 6:21:29 PM EDT
From: mark@labornotes.org

Hi Noel,

I got your email from Linda Setchell at Eggplant Active Media. I work for a small non-profit in NYC called Labor Notes. We publish a monthly magazine for grassroots labor activists and have been working on redesigning our very old website to run on Drupal. We are almost done, but need to find someone who can help us take our site (which as far as I can tell is almost completely finished) and migrate it off the Eggplant test site and onto Site5 where we are going to host it. (The need kinda goes hand-in-hand with by Arthur Foelsche leaving Eggplant.)

We are pretty broke, so obviously a Drupal evangelist is what we really need, but we do a fairly modest amount of dough we could put towards this. Linda thought you were the best person to get some ideas, since you are a mover and shaker in the NYC Drupal community.

Any leads would be much appreciated.

Practical demonstration of Drupal (rich info-Space) on IST-2006 21/23 November Helsinki (FIN)

IST-2006 21/23 November Helsinki (FIN) open invitation to collaborate in IST-Media-Blog Exhibition

The European Commission (EC) DG Information Society has approved the exhibition in the IST-2006 21/23 November Helsinki (FIN) of
http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/istevent/2006/index_en.htm

IST-Media-Blog (Rich media profiles for all) Cordis 3rd generation.

http://IST-2006.consen.info/

CONSEN Euro-Group, DrupalCat and MUFICATA-ZENSCI offer you (Drupal community and professionals) the opportunity of co-organize this exhibition in a Practical, Integrative, Cooperative, Demonstrative, Scientific, technologic and Business innovative effort to build a web-portal, database and a sustainable and responsible socio-economic exploitable Info-Space.

We have some months to work and concrete the details and develop the projects/companies database of IT competences taxonomies and media profiles. Should be a network-session or work-shop (we are awaiting the approval).

The event is real relevant (5000 professionals in The Hague (NLD) IST-2004).

Monday 20th could be the DrupalCon or celebrate jointly during the three days in parallel.

In principle, we think that Cooperants could co-host the stand, have a panel A4-A6, invitations to the dinners, insert the profiles in the database during these months and maintain in the credits of the commercial brochures, preference to enter in next works, projects and initiatives.

Business experts (Open4Business) can apply in real and practical business models, i,e, sponsoring in addition in a self-promotion campaign and negotiate networking.

Scientific are encourage to study these technologic areas and in particular this Information and Communication Environments in order to present papers for the CONSEN-DrupalCat conference in March 2007 in Barcelona (the two last weeks from 19 to Friday 30th to be confirmed).

Marketplace Sketch

I had my first attempt to draw up what I would like to see this market place to provide. Please see the attached diagram.

The sketch is based on the considerations of what I heard from various posts:

-- quality and customer satisfactory is important
-- open bidding is not preferred. I also think this might be odd given the fact that this marketplace is spawn off from an existing community that many people have known each others already.

So, without worring about how this will actually work, here is what I have, the market place will consist of:

- shops
- directories
- matching services
- account manager (for large project)
- and associate services

-- The shops will be for quality themes, pre-made sites, special modules. etc. Given the shops contain goods (not services), we can use product rating to keep the quality up.

-- the directory will contain pre-screened drupal provider information

-- the matching service will help the buyers narrow down their selections, matching can be based on type of work, pricing, geographical location etc., the buyers will then make their own decisions base on what they see from the provider profiles.

-- if the project is large, the buyer may also choose to use an account manager without going thru the matching process .

-- the market place will also provide services to the associates (i.e. the drupal service provider), some will be paid services. as those paid services will be tailored for drupal providers and shared among many associates, so the associates should enjoy a lower price compare if they would do it as one off arrangement.

Not sure how people feel about the shops concept, I think there are a lot of people who are willing to pay some to get a quality theme but can't afford to pay full price for a custom made one. Same for modules, there might be more incentive for companies to build quality modules that sell for $30-40 where customer can receive on going support for each drupal releases.

Thoughts?

Jenny

Cultural Fusion Prototype

I'm collaborating with Yvette on her Cultural Fusion project , with her permission I'm posting the following request to the group. I like to use this project as an example of "managed project services" that this marketplace can offer (as what I'm doing now), as well as a "Collaborative Drupal Project" that the to-be-developed BMOC model can be applied.

If you read thru the business and development plan that Ron and Yvette put together on the CF site, it seems as a mission impossible for any one single Drupal consulting firm today. To understand this project, first scan thru the main page http://comfusion.pbwiki.com/CulturalFusion, it is most important to grasp the mathematical concept of infinity that is being told thru the story of Hotel Infinity. I quote the version from Dave Stacy at the end of his article " The point of all this is that infinity is NOT a number, and--though there is a subject called "transfinite arithmetic"--you can't think in terms of doing ordinary arithmetic with infinity. The best way to think about it, is that infinity is a property that some sets possess. Richard Dedekind defined an infinite set to be one which could be put in one-to-one correspondence with a proper subset of itself. This is the very thing that we see drupal as a community plumbing can enable for many self-organizing network of networks that can grow into infinity.

Currently, we are most interested to figure out the time and cost required for building a prototype of CF, so that we can take it to the potential investor as a proof of concept.

The mindmap diagram on the main page illustrates how this quantum marketplace can be realized. See how many drupal building blocks are already there, and how many re-usable components that we can re-use for other projects once we have done one. I think initially this prototype only needs to demonstrate an integrated view of various pieces using Drupal as an overall integration framework, we may start by using 3rd party software to get the functions we need quickly but with an aim to make all re-usable pieces as drupal modules for ease of customization in future projects.

Any thoughts/suggestions on this project are most welcome and let me know if there is a specific area that you would like to work on, such as Skype integration, e-learning package etc. We expect only a small fund can be allocated to the prototype development, however I'm thinking if you are already familiar with some drupal modules that are applicable to this project such as e-commerce, CRM then it will be a lot easier for you to come along to help us configuring the modules according to the project descriptions. The prototype funds can then be either contributed towards building this marketplace or towards Drupal in general.

A few more pointers to help you reading the mindmap:

the Go Game is an interactive way of engaging CF visitors using digital ART to enhance the user experience , a similar concept is here: http://www.pandanet.co.jp/English/art/samurai.html

the dealmap site is here: http://www.dealmap.com/ we will use the site function as is for the CF project initially (unless we get better suggestions).

the Hotel Infinity will house infinity # of projects and sponsored events, an example of such project that is going on is the ImmortalEgo project http://comfusion.pbwiki.com/ImmortalEgo

Cheers,
Jenny

Please don't kill this in bureaucracy and complicated systems

I just read through this group - and I'm thrilled.
After having "played around" with Drupal on various pet projects for the past four years, I'm now moving to become a full time Social Media consultant here in Denmark, and plan to base most of my work on Drupal. I've been working with computer media for my entire professional career (since 1992), and I'm really looking forward to this.

I do have one concern though. This initiative could be bogged down in "boards", rules, regulations, headquarters, minutes, etc.
I have seen this happen with international communities on more than one occation. Keep it simple - if at all possible. Don't build too much structure, but stick to a few clear rules, roles, and best practices.

I'm currently working on a similar project in Denmark - connecting with the danish Drupal community, and building a "show case" site - which will present Drupal in a pleasant way to clients, list danish developers and consultants, and list a number of good case stories.

I'm looking forward to see this initiative grow and thrive.

Announcing the "Drupal Open Co-operative Business Model"!

Okay everybody,

Neil McEvoy, you have tempeted me to announce the "Drupal Open Co-operative Business Model", the first of its kind, this too will be a Business Center of the marketplace. This will also cut down on the issue of pricings, Asian's cutting your profit grips and all that stuff! So here it goes:

Copyright Notice 2005, Fouad Riaz Bajwa, All rights Reserved till further notification:
Remember this business model titled "Drupal Open Co-operative Business Model BMOC" is neither patented nor it is available for patenting under US Federal Laws or international WTO-TRIPS and only falls into Copyright of creative expression, it is the Official Copyright of Mr. Fouad Riaz Bajwa, General Secretary and Co-Founder of FOSSFP: Free and Open Source Software Foundation of Pakistan resident of Lahore, Pakistan and is announced as of June 20th of 2006 on http://groups.drupal.org/marketplace as part of ongoing discussions to formulate a Drupal Services Consulting Marketplace. On my behalf, I officially authorize, Jenny Hsueh of On Demand Network, NJ and Neil McEvoy Bootstrap Ventures (I hope you two don't mind!) to defend this model and its Copyright legalities in New Jersey, USA, or, anywhere they deem there is a violation or misuse of the business model titled "Drupal Open Co-operative Business Model BMOC".

This business model titled "Drupal Open Co-operative Business Model" is for defining alternative business models for the open source general services and specialized services markets both online and offline. The model defines a format for developing a Software Development Co-operative based around the Drupal CMS the avenues of services or market opportunities it has provided. This model also addresses the marketing power and recognition that Drupal requires in the global ITeS marketplace by providing a strong case for marketing Drupal globally.

This is completely an Electronic Marketplace Model, a virtual organization that only has marketing deployments but no inhouse development centers, development is managed virtually and the model has not development overhead costs, no large software house requirements and is free from the physical factory model. This model capitalizes on knowledge products developed by knowledge workers residing in remote locations servicing international clients and contacts maintained by the business.

According to this model there are three major collectives (Business Centers or Profit Centers for that matter) of the Drupal Open Co-operative Business Model (now will be termed as Drupal-BMOC):

1. Marketing Collective -(BMOC-MC)
This is the marketing frontend of the Co-operative

2. Development Collective -(BMOC-DC)
This is the development backend and the mutual fund of the Co-operative

3. Support Collective - (BMOC-SC)
This is the Open Source Software, Artwork, Capacity Development and specialized techincal services group (TSG) of the Co-operative that creates all the websites, training materials, provides the infrastructure for the co-operative, it is the blood and heart of the organization.

1. Marketing Collective (BMOC-MC)

The Marketing Collective (BMOC-MC) is the marketing frontend of the model, whereby this collective will carryout extensive marketing activities for promoting the Drupal platform and services built around it globally both online and offline.

It is not necessary that the human component of the model be 100% specialized in Drupal Services but should be well prepared regarding the opportunities that Drupal offers in the commercial services supply chain sphere.

The BMOC-MC will prepare all the marketing collateral as well as important training materials provided by the Support Collective (BMOC-SC).

The marketing collective will extend international and localized websites for marketing of Drupal services as a corporate product and opportunity.

The BMOC-MC will market the service offerings and products being made available by the Development Collective (BMOC-DC) enabled through the BMOC-SC.

BMOC-MC will adopt and promote Open and alternative forms of carrying out business in the market with relevance to their region and continent of operations.

BMOC-MC will also take care of a legal advisory branch to manage the its collective and should only support the BMOC-DC and the BMOC-MC and not take a governing role of the Co-operative.

Each BMOC-MC unit is assigned a BMOC-DC unit based upon the type of services it is marketing and the business contracts it is bringing in to the Co-operative.

The BMOC-MC will only interface with the client with a selected member of the BMOC-DC, usually a Director or a CTO or Project Manager in order to resolve querries and take user requirements or complete UAT procedures and deliverables.

More to come on this model.

2. Development Collective (BMOC-DC)

The Development Co-operative is a software development model under which global software development services are recruited for catering to the growing ITeS demand globally.

The Development Co-operative is a project management model with a fund to manage the projects that are recieved under this model.

Anyone who joins the Drupal Cooperative will not pay any upfront fees or may do so if agreed upon by the administrators, all this money goes into the BMOC-Global Fund that will maintained as a Fund in any US bank as agreed by the administrator according to the laws of the US.

For example, if everyone pays US$100, and we have over 100 initial developers and consultants, the collective shall have a Fund of 100000, as time passes and the fees are raised, the amount will increase but the Fund is not dependent on this amount neither is encouraging it, it is to maintain the functioning and costs of the platform.

Now what happens is that based upon their experience, the service providers are taken under various software development/project management heads, for example, as
1. Project Directors
2. CTOs,
3. Development Managers
4. Developers

Operational Overview:
(Arbitration and Escrow issues are part of the legalities, risk management and operational working of the system that shall communicated later on the closed environment for discussions)

Each Project Director reports to the Co-operative Management.

CTOs support the Project Director in managing Development Managers.

Development Managers manage developer teams around the globe.

Developers are not aware of each other and only develop components assigned by the Development Managers.

Development Managers are not aware of the client accounts and submit completed project to the CTOs who evaluate the projects on the basis of SQA-Testing Quality of product development and document patterns or best practices of development of these projects that are further extended to the BMOC-SC for documentation and compilation.

The Director oversees the delivery and manages the submission of revenue to the fund.

The fund will retain all the funds paying out to all the operational Human Resource of the system.

The fund will charge a commission to all the developers.

The fund will retain a percentage of the income of the developers as a retainers fees and quality check system

This retained fund will continue to grow and if the developer resigns from the system shall be paid back the amount.

The retained fund, the commissions, the joining fees, support the creation of the Fund, the Fund in return pays the Drupal Project money to sustain the project.

The fund funds all the marketing and provides seed investments for business center startups but eventually takes back that money to grow, interest on the money funds the technical infrastructure of the system.

The fund will offer an Initial Pubic Offering equated on the basis of its holdings and will only IPO one business or profit center one at a time to avoid buy offs by competitors (if any).

The rest of the operational secrets shall be revealed on the closed group.

Here is an example of how the BMOC-DC will work. For every service market profit center, there may be one director, for eg:
Director CMS Services
Director Web Design Services
Director Graphic Design Services

The BMOC-MC under each Director may have, 4 CTOs, 16 Project Managers and 4 developers per project manager. The rest will be communicated later.

3. Support Collective - (BMOC-SC)

Support Collective (BMOC-SC) may be termed as the Finance, Administration, Technical Service Centers or the major backbone of the Co-operative infrastructure.

The BMOC-SC manages all the support to the BMOC-MC and BMOC-DC enabling extension of the overall marketplace, provision of marketing collateral, technical support, legal advisory, contracting, NDA/SLA issues, Fund management, organizing events and new profit centers for the Collective, managing marketing offices, hosting servers, providing program technical and managerial support.

The BMOC-SC will be responsible for attracting investment and entering IPO in the future.

The BMOC-SC will manage the Drupalversity and Certifications globally that will eventually become the standard criterion for joining the Co-operative and the Fund.

The business model for this project is being designed, Jenny please take note. My brain is still working and let me think what I can come up with, I am not a genious, just using all of the free spaces I have got up here :)

Wow

This place has got it all. 21st century network organisations through to Social Enterprise... like I've found home... :-D

Reading through the posts, here's my initial personal thoughts:

Yes I'd say there is definately a need for it. I think Drupal suffers a bit as it isn't quite organised enough in key areas. There is a need for improved documentation, better showcase facilities etc., and a services group would be ideal for delivering this, as a means of self-describing their skills etc. With roles you can directly implement the required skills/membership system.

A co-op group could then pool resources/funds to create centralised resources for where things are duplicated. Eg a specialist lawyer could be hired that each member gets to use for client project negotiations, template legal agreements for members to use etc etc.

>>> The Focus of Our Marketing SHOULD NOT BE Drupal

The key starting point I think. I do agree there is a much larger market for the applications that Drupal can enable, where the marketing is based on the app, no mention of Drupal etc. This is exactly our own core strategy (ie On Demand Networks). However, to achieve this, we require to purchase Drupal services, and this is where I think a Drupal marketplace fits in. The target market is those who know about and want Drupal, they are looking for related services. Hence, imho, it would feature Drupal, but focus more on the services.

If you'd also like to discuss/focus on the productised apps, we'd be happy to do that too.

>>> However, I do not like the idea of an open project bidding arena.

You can also approach the org model in a couple of ways. A supplier federation could be very "loosely coupled", so it is literally just a marketplace. Post your project, get bids etc. Each member is standalone, the marketplace is just there to concentrate supply and attract demand. In this scenario it is subject to market forces, so pricing will vary and a quality framework ideal.

Or it could be more tightly bound, with it acting more as a single entity, ie a Drupal Services virtual organisation. There you'd focus more on standardising services so that sales processes are more controlled etc.

Having absolutely no Drupal skills, I nominate myself for Chief Tea Boy... :-)

Neil.

Social Responsibility & Enterprise

Yeup thats right, as you all may see that the model we are formulating here has Social Responsibility as the number one agenda, how, first, a certain percentage of income goes directly to the Drupal Project, it will be there issue what they do with the money, secondly, as the Drupal Marketplace is completely established, we will clone it to Drupal Non-Profits Marketplace for supporting Non-Profits throughout the world for empowerment through Drupal. We will have to keep this idea in mind, 100%!

Secondly, where ever possible, the marketplace will even contribute to non-profits and capacity development activities around its sphere of service provision activities. Yes, if any new products turn into ventures, the marketplace will also provide seeding services thus it will be a hub for social enterprising!

Your thoughts,

"Leaders think of great Ideas, Successful people implement, benefit from those ideas, share it with the world and move on to the next great idea implementation"

In response to quality of service and what should actually be marketed?

Please read this blog entry on Nick Lewis's Blog: http://www.nicklewis.org/node/831

Taking Drupal's Marketing to the Next Level

Someday, I’ll have a chance to design some halfway decent drupal ads. In the meantime, however, I can only offer some general thoughts on how Drupal could become the poster child for good grassroots open source marketing.

The Focus of Our Marketing SHOULD NOT BE Drupal
Drupal’s biggest problems, in terms of marketing is two fold:

Our marketing is not getting people’s attention. I think the majority of new users had to seriously educate themselves before they understood that drupal was the right choice.

Even when we do get their attention, our current marketing fails to seduce them.

To put it differently, Drupal keeps messing up first Dates.

Dating Advice for Drupal
Have you ever watched a really BAD first date? Well, I certainly have. I work 10-12 hours a day at a busy coffee shop near University of Texas. I witness at least one bad date every day. Oddly, the most common mistake I’ve observed in dating apply directly to drupal marketing efforts.
Don’t Talk too Much

And for god’s sake, don’t talk too much about yourself. This is the number one screw up guys make on dates. They talk. I can’t tell you how many times I hear from friends, “Well, I thought he was cute, but then he just started talking, and talking, and talking… I was so bored. “

Similarly, drupal’s date is unlikely to care that it’s a framework, and a CMS. Drupal needs to understand that their date is still “getting a feel” for Drupal.

Skilled daters know that on the first date, you ask your date questions. When they give an answer, you make an effort to empathize, to understand, to agree (but this is best done in a way that makes them laugh, or intrigues them).

The goal of your questions is to find some weird passion, ideal, or activity which both of you share. More often than not, you only have to find on thing in common before you can move on to a deeper level.

Bottom line: Drupal’s marketing needs to focus on making connections with potential users. Once the connection is made, we can move to the next level of education.
Practically Applying Dating Tips for Drupal

At SXSWi,Bryght’s [1] Kris Krug [2] and I talked about doing a set of ads for drupal called “In a box”. These ads are designed to speak to great variety of passionate people who could be potetential users. The ad would be very easy to do as a series (and indeed would need to be). Here’s a rough sketches:
Exhibition in a Box

Intended Audience: Artists, Photographers, Graphic Designers.

Main Visual Focus: A crowded art gallery shown on the cover of a box, (similar to the way large lego sets are packaged).

Rationale: Duh, artists, photographers, and graphic designers are interested in showcasing their work. This ad SHOWs them that drupal does exactly that.(remember, its all about making that first connection).

Text: A footnote along the lines of “buyers not included”, or “artistic talent not included”.

After clicking the ad, they’d be directed to page that explains to them how Drupal can be used to create online showcases for their work. It will show screenshots of really well done drupal galleries, and then send them to a tutorial on how to get started building thier own gallery.
Final Word

This was literally the kind of idea that I wrote down on a napkin. It could probably be improved greatly. Or maybe it isn’t the best we can do. However, I think it shows an example of good marketing, and even better, good education. The flow is: a) make a connection with the target user, b) educate them, entice them, seduce them using screenshots, live examples, and links to technical info. c) then, we’re ready to make our run to the home plate: they download, and we ease them into making their dreams happen using drupal.

Or, we could rework how to say, “Drupal is very very powerful, and technically sophisticated. However, that’s what every other CMS does.

Think different.

Concerns

Great idea, I think it needs some rounding out.

First off, there are going to be providers with different levels of competency. It would be in everyone's interests, right off the bat, to establish particular services they provide and have some method of feedback allowing individual providers to be rated. I would hate to see a couple of poor client experiences lead to an entire marketplace getting a bad reputation.

Secondly, economics. There are going to be individual consultants who can work for much less than consultant shops which can provide more services. Something that would be interesting, as a way of leveling the playing field between each, is the establishment of a sub-consultancy group as well, where groups can collaborate to provide services. My company, for example, sells a bulk mailing program that intergrates nicely with Drupal through Web services. While I may not be interested in every client out there, people certainly should be able to take advantage of the mailer I have directly rather than sending clients over.

M

thoughts and concerns

I moved from traditional employment to full-time Drupal indy consultant at the end of last year. I've learned the same initial lessons everyone has. Working for oneself is great. Specializing in Drupal is fun, rewarding and also great. Taking over responsibility for roles such as tech writer and project manager is not so fun, rewarding or great. Dealing directly with a client rather than with a tech lead, or at least a PM, is a complicated and messy business that has more to do with people skills and mind reading than with programming or design. I've also learned (the hard way) that blindly trusting clients and forgoing all of the hassle of agreements, policies and procedures is most definitely a bad idea.

These negative areas are those which could absolutely benefit from some sort of talent co-op. Perhaps this group could share it's time/ideas/resources to screen clients, establish policies, distribute projects, etc... While I'm naturally skeptical of anything involving more than 2 or 3 people, I do think it could possibly work.

However, I do not like the idea of an open project bidding arena. Just as there are an abundance of useless clients (see 'paid services' forum) there is no shortage of unqualified "developers" willing to take on any project for an impossible price. I've had to come in after the fact on a couple of occassions already in which some low budget, oversesas outfit left a client with nothing useable at all, yet was happy to take the client's money.

No doubt these same folks will come in with their $2000 bids on $15000 projects, and everyone is left screwed.

So how do we make something like this work? There must be some sort of screening process and/or reputation tracking to prevent the type of uselessness you find on guru.com and other more Drupally sites.

Harry

First Step

Hi,

Thanks to Fouad for taking the initiative of setting this up, personally I think this proposal will be a win-win for everyone, wondering if anyone foresees any down side of doing what is being proposed here?

The 8 project ideas outlined in the group page seems a good starting point to tackle them one by one, I will also add the considerations of legal review etc.

So where do we start? I think a few key steps are:

Agree on the commission and Drupal contribution model

Membership model ( Should this be an open market or suppliers have to meet certain qualifications to keep the market place quality up?)

Discuss and Implement the facilities required for this market place

Civicspace has already started Civicspace associate program, how these two initiatives can benefit from each others? will be an interesting discussions as well.

Most likely we can help out on the hosting platform and be one of the sponsors or key facilitator to build this Drupal market place.

Cheers,
Jenny
