User group meeting

The next Sacramento DUG meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at the Hoppy Brewing Company from 5:30pm-9:00pm.

Part 1 (5:30 PM): Install fest, led by Gary Pryde - how to build a Drupal installation from scratch. If you've not yet installed Drupal, here's your chance to see how easy it is to do.

Part 2 (6:30 PM): Introductions of members and "How Was Your Week?"

Main Discussion (7 PM): "How'd They Do That?" (aka Stump the Chumps) - audience participation time. If you've ever wondered how a certain site does something, or would like to know if something is possible with Drupal, bring your questions and example URLs to the meeting, and see how different developers might approach the problem. You may find there are more than one way to implement a feature or design.

Followed by lightning talks and general discussion.

As always, if you have an idea for a presentation (short or long), please post it, or contact me.

A subject for discussion is the idea of a beginner's workshop, as was suggested at the last meeting. For the time being, we have been continuing to start our "official" meetings at 6:30, preceded by a beginner's topic at 5:30.

We've been filling up the room, so get there early if you plan on eating! We will also be discussing a possible new venue if attendance continues to increase, any suggestions are welcome.

The room isn't scheduled until 6:30 and only for 10. I am here but don't have the authority to change this.

As long as there's no one in

As long as there's no one in the room already, they've never had a problem before opening up the room to us early. Someone should be there soon (by 5:30 or so)...

About last night.....

Thank you all for an enjoyable meeting (my first). Here are some comments/notes to share...

Regarding the Acquia stack installer I mentioned, the one I used about 2 weeks ago installed Php 5.2.13, Apache Web Server 2.2.14 and MySQL Database Server 5.1.41 and Drupal 6.17, all onto a WinXP netbook. There is the usual Drupal manual check for updates option, and it comes with the automatic update status module enabled by default. I particularly liked the simple and straightforward setup of the AMP stack on Windows without any fuss or muss.

The install was all automatic, finishing on their control panel which launches the Drupal local install at localhost:8082. I had no Skype conflicts. It further installed it's own mailserver (someone asked about this). When I added myself as the admin during the familiar Drupal installation process, it e-mailed me my new account status and login info. Since I installed this on my netbook (so that I can easily bring this dev environment with me) it was somewhat surreal when my e-mail client on my desktop system showed mail from my netbook Drupal "site" seconds after setting up Drupal! :)

Standard out-of-the-box modules installed in this distribution are:

CCK
Admin Menu
Apache Solr
Date/Time
Image
Image Cache
Input Filters
Advanced Help
Comment Notify
Mollom
Pathauto
Token
Token Actions
TokenSTARTER
Webform
Printer, e-mail and PDF versions
Statistics
Taxonomy
Testing (Mollom Test)
JQuery UI
Views
Voting (Fivestar)
Acquia Network Connector

Looks like a nice starter package. Everything works like you'd expect on a Drupal site.

Hope this helps.
