Position: Web Managing Editor, Travel Agent Central
Location: New York City

Questex Media Group, a Boston-based B2B media company, has a brand-new, thrilling opportunity for a hands-on, web-savvy editor to coordinate the editorial, user-generated content, art, multi-media, production processes and workflow to produce TravelAgentCentral.com, which is undergoing a major redesign and will be moved to a Drupal platform. This is the perfect position for someone who is creative and passionate about writing, the travel industry, and digital media.

With direction from Group Editorial Director, the Web Managing Editor plans the content and templates of TravelAgentCentral.com and its related products; approves page elements, performs copyediting, and may also have writing responsibilities. Implements product standards and policies and ensures that the product is factual and grammatically correct. He or she manages content taxonomies to support product functionality, information organization, and presentation. Coordinates the efforts of freelance and other editors, manages quality control, and may coordinate the article acquisition process with regards to the web. Attends industry events as directed by Group Editorial Director and acts as a representative of the site within the industry.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Regularly confers with group editorial director to formulate product strategies, plan production, develop budgets, and discuss topics for self-generated articles and other projects.

• Organizes and oversees the digital editorial workflow, quality control, and promotion processes for assigned products, micro-sites, and other special projects. Establishes and reinforces measurable goals, removes obstacles, evaluates and monitors progress, and makes adjustments as needed.

• Assumes responsibility for grammatical accuracy, clarity, completeness, appropriateness for intended audience, and conformity to established standard format guidelines of TravelAgentCentral.com Acts as liaison between editorial, marketing production, art, sales, and other support department staffs.

• Assumes responsibility for content tagging, tag accuracy, management and extension of content taxonomies. Works with editorial staff to ensure proper use of taxonomy.

• Is cognizant of audience engagement and advertiser needs and works in partnership with sales staff and marketing director to meet both sets of needs without compromising editorial integrity.

• Assists group editorial director with managing article acquisition process by regularly corresponding with authors and others interested in contributing articles, clarifying publication policies, addressing issues of concern, and coordinating schedules as required.

• Copyedits submissions as needed; reviews prepared pages of text, reviews and approves product templates; reviews graphical elements, tables and charts; writes editorials, articles, and miscellaneous copy as appropriate; participates in quality checks prior to promotion.

• Assumes responsibility for page component selection process, and coordinates any required functionality changes or template/template-component enhancements with a development project manager.

• Develops, maintains, and utilizes knowledge of industry and trends, competitive environment, and editorial vision. Demonstrates thorough evolution of editorial products as necessary.

• Attends industry conferences, trade shows, and other events, representing the publication and the Company as required. Establishes and maintains positive professional relationships with authors, industry experts, and other internal and external contacts.

• Participates in reader and industry research, keeping abreast and ahead of anticipated market needs and changes. Works with group editorial director to adjust strategy of publication(s) accordingly.

• Performs additional duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

• Four-year degree in Journalism, English, Communications or other relevant field or commensurate experience.
• Three to five years of relevant journalism/writing experience.
• Three to five years using a web content management system (CMS). Understands content management paradigms for the web including; classification, workflow, CSS, HTML, page promotion, templates and page components.
• Demonstrated organizational and project management skills, including the ability to work in a deadline oriented environment.
• Demonstrated competency in use of editing and proofreading skills to resolve stylistic, grammatical, and form of written material.
• Knowledgeable in effective use of web design and information architecture.
• Excellent written and oral communications skills.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently and with minimal direction.
