smoothstr's post on making Drupalcon more inviting to women prompted me to go back through old Drupalcon schedules and attempt to compile some data and statistics. This is a wiki page, so please feel free to add to and expand this.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find schedules online for any Drupalcons prior to Barcelona (2007). But here are some stats I was able to scrounge up in terms of women presenters, approximate attendance levels of Drupalchix BoFs, etc. Note that these purposely don't include stats from BoF sessions, since those are both a) inconsistently captured across the years (Szeged did an amazing job, but we haven't quite matched it since), and b) typically aren't in the schedule / program ahead of time, thus aren't influencing anyone's decision to come to Drupalcon.
Here's the abbreviated version:
| Conference | Number of women (co)presenters | Number of sessions with women (co)presenters | Drupalchix BoF attendance (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drupalcon Barcelona (September 2007) | 2 out of 61 (~3%) | 4 out of 90 (~4%) | 12-15 |
| Drupalcon Boston (March 2008) | 12 out of 108 (~11%) | 17 out of 73 (~23%) | 20-25 |
| Drupalcon Szeged (August 2008) | 9 out of 84 (~10%) | 14 out of 68 (~20%) | 25-30 |
| Drupalcon DC (March 2009) | 14 out of 121 (~11%) | 22 out of 109 (~20%) | 50 |
| Drupalcon Paris (Sept 2009) | 9 out of 71 (~12%) | 11 out of 84 (~13%) | 30-40 |
| Drupalcon San Francisco (April 2010) | 41 out of 179 (~23%) | 42 out of 133 (~31%) | 100+ |
| Drupalcon Copenhagen (August 2010) | 14 out of 122 (~11%) | 13 out of 107 (~12%) | 15-20 |
| Drupalcon Chicago (March 2011) | 32 out of 146 (~22%) | 30 out of 102 (~29%) | |
| Drupalcon London (August 2011) | 12 out of 107 (~11%) | 15 out of 90 (~17%) | 15-20 |
So basically, other than an outlier with Drupalcon Barcelona where the numbers were very low (which is coincidentally where the first Drupalchix BoF was held), and an outlier with Durpalcon San Francisco where the numbers were very high, we tend to hover around 10% of total speakers and 15-20% of total sessions with women presenters.
Drupalcon Barcelona (September 2007)
http://barcelona2007.drupalcon.org/schedule
Out of 61 speakers, only 2 of them were women (~3%). Out of 90 sessions, 4 (about 4%) had women presenters.
Women speakers / sessions at Drupalcon Barcelona:
- Angie Byron (webchick): Drupal SoC showcase, How to Contribute to Drupal, Drupal Association Panel
- Karen Stevenson (KarenS): CCK 6.x and Beyond
(Note that these stats might look worse than they actually are since co-presenters aren't listed on the web schedule, and the PDF version is a 404.)
The only other woman on the schedule was Robin Barre, who led the inagural Drupalchix BoF. There were about 12 women in attendance.
Drupalcon Boston (March 2008)
http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/sessions
http://boston2008.drupalcon.org/files/DRUPALCON_SCHEDULE_5March_C.pdf
The PDF version listed co-presenters as well, so I used that one to gather my statistics.
Out of 108 speakers, 12 of them were women (about 11%), including one half of a keynote duo (Leslie Hawthorn from Google). Out of 73 sessions, 17 had women presenters (~23%).
Women speakers / sessions at Drupalcon Boston:
- Addison Berry (add1sun): Contributing to Drupal
- Angie Byron (webchick): Report from usability testing, GHOP, SimpleTest, Drupal.org redesign panel, Drupal Association panel,
- Tiffany Farriss (farriss): Small Giants: building high quality Drupal businesses, Drupal.org redesign panel
- Leslie Hawthorn: Google & Open Source
- Lisa Williams (Lisa Williams): Drupal and the Knight Foundation
- Katherine Lawrence (klawrence)
- Maurnee Lyons (maureen): Converting mock-ups to Drupal themes
- Allie Micka (vauxia): Mail, notifications, & messaging framework
- Stephanie Pakrul (stephthegeek): Designing for Drupal
- Laura Scott (laura s): Popular Science - Case Study), Drupal in the real world
- Karen Stevenson (KarenS): Report from usability testing, Future of Fields, Tracking Event Results with CCK and Views
- Rebecca White (becw): Drupal as a GIS/Mapping platform
At the Drupalchix BoF in Boston, there were around 25-30 women there.
Drupalcon Szeged (August 2008)
http://szeged2008.drupalcon.org/program/schedule
Out of 84 speakers, 9 of them were women (~10%). Out of 68 sessions, 14 had women presenters or co-presenters (~20%).
Women speakers / sessions at Drupalcon Szeged:
- Katherine Bailey: jQuery basics, Advanced jQuery
- Addison Berry: A gentle introduction to Drupal coding
- Angie Byron: Intro to testing, Testing party, DROP, SoC showcase, Drupal Association
- Tiffany Farriss: Drupal for Museums
- Emma Jane Hogbin: Open for (small) business
- Jody Hamilton: Node Templating
- Leslie Hawthorn: Google and Open Source
- Stella Power: Using the Coder module
- Rebecca White: Roadmap for Mapping
At the Drupalchix BoF here, there were again about 25-30 people. Lots of different ones from Boston.
Drupalcon DC - March 2009
http://dc2009.drupalcon.org/node/3774
Out of 121 speakers, 14 were women (~11%), including one half of a keynote duo (Leisa Reichelt) and a special presenter workshop before the conference (Emma Jane Hogbin). Out of 109 sessions, 22 had women presenters or co-presenters (~20%).
- Addison Berry: A gentle intro to Drupal code, Documentation is Hot!, Usability Testing at University of Baltimore
- Mollee Bauer: Pregancy.org case study
- Angie Byron: Drupal 7, Drupal Association

This time the Drupalchix BoF was held during lunch, which was a little weird. So I'm not sure how many came in total, but there are about 50 of us in this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/domesticat/3328404777/
Drupalcon Paris - September 2009
http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/schedule/program/day2
http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/schedule/program/day3
http://paris2009.drupalcon.org/schedule/program/day4
Out of 71 speakers, 9 were women (~12%). 11 of 84 sessions (~13%) had women at the front of the room. The numbers might actually be one less because one of the women presenters is for something called "Isobar Carat" and I have no idea what that is.
Like Drupalcon Barcelona, because the schedule only lists the "primary" speaker in each slot, the stats might actually be better or worse than this; I didn't have time to click into each session individually and calculate co-presenters.
- Angela Byron (webchick): Drupal 7
- Colleen Carrol (caroltron): Sustainable theming
- Emma Jane Hogbin: PHP for Themers
- Jen Lampton (jenlampton): Setting up a WYSIWYG editor
- Lily Magagnin: Isobar Carat ???
- Allie Micka (vauxia): Geo tools for Drupal, Paying for the Plumbing
- Maureen Lyons (maureen): Real-time End-User Theme Configuration
- Laura Scott: Functional Interactive Design, Agile is not Cowboy spelled backwards
- Jessica Whitman (uberchic): Using Ubercart
The Drupalchix BoF was at lunch again, so numbers are tough. I'd say around 30-40 people, but could be overshooting that.
Drupalcon San Francisco - April 2010
http://sf2010.drupal.org/conference/schedule
Out of 179 speakers, 41 were women (~23%). Out of 133 sessions, 42 (~31%) had women at the front of the room. Holy cow!

Many more Drupalchix at the BoF this time. :) Over 100 of us were crammed into a BoF room. It was pretty amazing:

It'd be interesting to dig further into this and see if the reason San Francisco attracted so many women attendees and speakers was because of its location, or because of specific outreach done, or what.
Drupalcon Copenhagen - August 2010
http://cph2010.drupal.org/sessions/timetable
122 presenters, 14 were women (~11%). 107 sessions, 13 had women presenters (~12%).

The Drupalchix BoF here was very low-key, maybe about 15-20 attendees. There seemed to be fewer women attendees all around this con.
DrupalCon Chicago — March 2011
http://chicago2011.drupal.org/schedule.1
152 presenters, 32 were women (~21%). 104 sessions, 31 had women presenters (~30%).
