Drupal developers needed to democratize magazine publishing | The Bakersfield Californian
PLEASE RESPOND TO jobs@printcasting.com
The Bakersfield Californian is looking for experienced Drupal
developers for an exciting new social media project. Using funds from
a Knight News Challenge project, we're going to make it possible for
anyone to be their own local media mogul. Sound interesting? Read on
for details!
WHO ARE WE?
The Californian is an independent, family-owned newspaper in central
California that has a reputation for innovation. We're leaders in our
industry in applying "Web 2.0" concepts locally, and among the first
NewsCloud Newsroom Module
The NewsCloud Newsroom module makes it easy for Drupal-based sites to integrate an interactive, social media newsroom. An early test release of the module was released in February 2008 (http://drupal.org/node/219425) and is part of the Drupal CVS tree.
The Newsroom module is currently in early beta. The basic functionality works although a few bugs remain. We would like to improve the robustness of the module and add new features. We would also like to solicit feedback from the Drupal community to build a list of suggested enhancements for future development.
The outcome of this project will result in more organizations with Drupal websites using our module to attract interest in and generate activity on their website while increasing the level of engagement and knowledge of current events with their members; this in turn will help them become more successful in their own mission. We will also conduct a survey of groups that used the module and provide a post-mortem of the impact of the module on their organization's missions. The post-mortem will also assess whether ongoing updates to the module are necessary and what features might be included.
Review consensus
So, we need some consensus on how to proceed. We have two proposals right now, just sort of waiting for action.
Do we need to have scheduled public reviews -- in IRC or otherwise -- that impose some deadlines?
Should the admins simply give each proposal a one month lifespan and mark it rejected after that time?
How can we get things moving through the pipeline, so that Knight can start reviewing?

Information-Sharing using FeedAPI and Buddylist
Introduction
The Internet has empowered people to share information and ideas in unprecedented ways. It has enabled people to easily and at almost no cost to be both producers and consumers of information world-wide. Nowadays, people are able to have their own channel of information, broadcasting ideas, photos, videos, etc. This is very exciting and brings many opportunities for education, research, business and entertainment. However, it brings many challenges as well.
Problem
Knight Drupal Initiative question and answer
With the launch of the Knight Drupal Initiative, many people have questions.

The chat will be held in #drupal-dojo on freenode.

Proposal review guide
At the bottom of each proposal, you will find a voting widget. You are encouraged to read and rate each proposal. The following guidelines will help us be consistent when reviewing proposals.
When you rate an application, we would prefer that you also leave a comment about your rating and your reasoning. This is especially true is cases where subject-matter experts are critiquing a proposal or in situations where conflicts of interest may arise.
Rating scale
The system uses a 5-point rating scale, with votes corresponding to:
- 5 == Awesome!!!
- 4 == Recommended
Scholarships available for programmers to spend year studying journalism
A little off-topic, but it seems to me there could be a nice fit with this initiative– code tools for journalists while learning more about being a journalist: Still seeking coders interested in journalism.

Local Publishing Platform and Regional Aggregation Hub
This project will create two complementary sites: a Local Publishing Platform paired with a Regional Aggregation Hub.
The Publishing Platform will support a range of activities, from a K12 school magazine, a community paper, a writing project (something like the National Writing Project or Youth Radio), a college paper, etc.
The Aggregation Hub will provide a way for these different organizations to work together without losing any editorial control, or diluting the mission of the participating organizations.
