Hi

From the Drupalcon OPLC BoF:

Hi Bert and team,

We are trying to figure out how best to address Pablo's well defined requirements for web posting and blogging in Uruguay. See: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Requiremientos_Para_XO

We need to gauge the drupal development team's capacity and interest to turn that requirement in to software for use in uruguay. There is a good discussion on optimal strategy in the OPLC server dev list server-devel at lists.laptop.org.

We especially need a lead drupal developer to help us move this forward and recruit more coders. Anyone interested please reply on that list or pick up my e-mail there and contact me directly.

Thanks a lot for your help and for the great tool!

-this is a wiki page, please update what has to be done and what you are planning to do-

I would like to make it a goal to let the OLPC ship with a usable Drupal installation by default. So meshed networks can -even without internet access- share information in wiki's, blogs, youtube clones (it does have a buid in camera!) etc.

What should we do to make this happen:

  • everybody who wants to join, should subscribe to the devel ml of laptop.org
  • make a yum installation package
  • make sure updates get in, it is maintained
  • make a profile for languages used
  • translate languages if needed
  • include good and useful modules
  • write howto's for children
  • .. please fill in more

I mailed the devel mailinglist of OLPC on how we should procede. But one thing is sure if we procede, we need manpower to make this dream come true. So if ou care about technology and want to give everybody the option to use it for the good (learning, sharing) and care about Drupal, please raise your hand if you want to help!

From the Drupalcon OPLC BoF:

We talked about this quite a bit at Drupalcon, and the general consensus was (I think) that the school server is probably a more important use case (politically, developmentally etc), although the package for the XO would likely be identical, or very similar at least. Providing for direct Drupal hacking on the XO is very fun too and potentially valuable long term, but I think will get wider usage if Drupal can get established as a primary platform on the school server (so kids can help improve their schools and communities software!).

A couple of great ideas that were discussed:

  • A 'school' install profile - that is designed specifically for the XO (good for the screen resolution/contrast, lessons, collaboration etc)
  • A small XML-RPC python app that is native to the XO - perhaps a plug-in for the word processor or journal. This would allow usage of a nice editing environment, and also (critically) allow kids to download their homework easily and work offline out of mesh range with the school, and then upload it to the site when they return.
