Dojo 2.1: Another attempt to revive the Drupal learning and mentoring group

Several months have passed since the Dojo lost it's way a bit when some noble ninjas attempted to create a great deal of good for the Drupal project. In a group of 1500+ members, there is no way to achieve any sort of consensus to why it stalled, how it could succeed, or what the purpose was in the first place. There are, however, a lot of indicators that the concept/ideal of an open learning/mentoring group is solid and is worth reviving. In that spirit, we've created a special section (see here) where we'll provide a recap where we left off and put forward some plans to get this valuable effort moving again.

Drupal.org redesign prototype: Iteration #1

Hi All,

This week we are calling on feedback on the first iteration of prototyping.

To view the prototypes in their current form please go to: http://drupal.markboultondesign.com

The wireframes produced so far are very much a work in progress, with many of the ideas being suggested from research that has been conducted to date. The card sort task (which many of you participated in - thanks!) produced a vast amount of data which we have been able to use in the prototyping stages. Usually 7 or 8 responses to a card sort task is enough to get good quality data ... we had well over 200 responses!

In keeping with previous weeks, please pay a visit to Leisa's blog where you can keep up to date with the project and add your own comments and feedback. In particular we would encourage you to look at the following, which summarise the user research this prototype is based on:

a) what we learned from the community wireframing project, (http://www.disambiguity.com/drupalorg-what-we-learned-from-the-community...)

b) more thoughts on the information architecture (http://www.disambiguity.com/drupalorg-more-thoughts-on-the-information-a...) and

c) what we learned from the card sort task (http://www.disambiguity.com/drupalorg-what-we-learned-from-the-card-sort...)

Please also follow the Twitter group (http://twitter.com/drupalredesign) and the Flickr group, where many of the wireframes have been posted. (http://www.flickr.com/groups/drupalredesign/)

You can either comment here, or on our own blogs. All the comments will be seen and evaluated to establish trends that will filter back into the development process. But, it's worth noting, our emphasis at this point in the project is weighted on more formal, structured feedback on task-based interviews and testing, which is going to be conducted this coming week with a representative panel of 'Outsiders' and 'Insiders'.

Thanks for sticking with us and letting us know your thoughts, every comment counts!

Amazee: free Drupal based social collaboration platform launched

Amazee (http://amazee.com) is a cool new social collaboration platform implemented in Drupal. It offers a free platform for people to come together and collaborate online on projects. Features include a project magazine (with cool drag and drop functionality), wiki, events calendar, discussion forums, sponsoring etc. Amazee is a great showcase for many things Drupal is good at including a great user interface.

Maybe it is an interesting candidate for a d.o front page showcase? Here is a summary of recent press coverage:

We want your thoughts on Drupal! (quick survey)

Hey all! We're conducting a 13-question survey to better understand what users of Drupal find lacking in several areas, including themes, e-commerce, and support. The responses will be used for data in a series of free reports for the community, and also to help us create products/services that better serve your needs. Personal/contact information is optional. We'll also be sharing the (anonymized) results so they can benefit everyone. Thanks!

Take the survey

Marketing of Open Source

Not two days ago in IRC Kieran tuned me onto Matt Asay's "the open road" blog... and its great reading.
Today he wrote about how important it is for open source projects to take marketing seriously... because its no longer enough to be free and open (when everyone else is free and open).
To get people to talk about you you have to give em something to talk about.
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10038966-16.html?part=rss&tag=feed&sub...

Open-source companies and community projects that don't invest in marketing will fail. This may not mean traditional marketing (e.g., print advertising, email campaigns, etc.) and, in fact, probably does not. But it must involve some element of getting the word out.

Otherwise, who will know to download and try it out?

Luckily, Drupal as a community has plenty of cheerleaders that just won't shut up about how great Drupal is :)

Current Redesign Conversations You Should Take A Look At! Experience Strategy & Audience Segmentation

hi all

Just wanted to get these in front of you for your review - we're currently discussing:

a) the experience strategy for drupal.org, (http://www.disambiguity.com/draft-drupalorg-experience-strategy/) and
b) proposed audience segmentation for drupal.org (http://www.disambiguity.com/insiders-and-outsiders/)

take a look, give us some feedback!
and don't forget you can also participate on Flickr, Twitter and Slideshare!
(more info here: http://www.disambiguity.com/opening-the-floodgates/)

Knight Drupal Initiative monthly proposal review -- 11 September 2008

After a week of delay due to DrupalCON related travel, it is time for our monthly open review meeting. We will meet for the next round of proposal reviews on Thursday, September 11th at 14:00 Eastern (US) (18:00 UTC).

The meeting will be held in IRC #drupal-dojo on irc.freenode.net. (See http://drupal.org/irc for information about using IRC.) We will meet for 1:30 with the following agenda:

1) Review current proposals that need decisions:

-- NewsCloud newsroom module is being reviewed for the second time and should be accepted or rejected at this meeting.

Participants are asked to review this proposal before the meeting.

The project sponsors are welcome to answer questions during this review. The possible outcomes of these reviews are:

* Submit the proposal to Knight for possible funding.
* Reject the proposal, with reasons why.
* Ask the proposal to be revised for the next round of review.

2) Introduce the new proposals for review:

-- Expanding Context_UI, Spaces, Messaging and Notifications, FeedAPI and Maps and Open Sourcing 8trees and Managing News is a new application that needs review and consensus on how to move forward. The application has met the acceptance criteria, but there are outstanding issues regarding the format and scope of the application. See the discussion of the proposal for details.

-- drupaleo - talent growing and hiring for drupal is a new proposal for review.
-- Grant-Making System is a new proposal for review.
-- Documentation sprints for better docs and to grow the team is a new proposal for review.

The purpose here is to get eyes on the new proposal, and let the submitter answer questions.

3) Time permitting, work on publicizing the efforts of the KDI.

Developer | AF83

Come to work and live in Paris....

AF83 is actively looking for experienced Druaplers for its Parisian offices... Mostly for newspapers/media/music/social networking sites. Knowing some French is ofcourse a plus but not an absolut requirement. Having european work papers can also simplify life.

AF83 is a young and vibrant company based in Paris with offices in San-Francisco specialized in community centric web sites and mobile applications.

In France, one of the promoters and organizers of Barcamps and other community activites, including last year’s first french DrupalCamp. Currently involved in the DiSo initiative over the European side.

Though young, AF83 has been called upon by major industry leaders in France (and now some overseas) to realize some very cool sites. Among the a Young talents site for the French Vodaphone subsidiary SFR, an innovative site around the music industry for Universal, an internal innovation management system for CapGemini and SFR, a fashion designers community based shop for les 3 Suisses, widgets for Google, the 2007 french presidential campaign internet tools for the socialist party just to name a few…

AF83 is a multi-tech shop with developments in our own Open Source PHP framework (Turbulences http://turb.ulenc.es), but also Ruby on Rails and Drupal based sites.

Don't hesitate to contact me for any further information.

PS.

Part time in our San-Francisco offices can be acceptable.

Getting more Drupal products promoted to the front page of Drupal.org

We are always looking for good news stories and announcements. We've been pretty good working with book publishers to promote Drupal books on Drupal.org. We've done less well with DVDs, but with Lullabot's latest we are starting to turn the corner.

We've recently missed Bryght's hosting product re-launch, and the Drupal miracle DVD series. http://www.masteringdrupal.com/news/drupal-miracle

Tom Geller's new Drupal series with Lynda.com is coming soon. There's supposed to be at least 6 more books coming over the next 6 months.

Are there any other product launches that we've missed, that should get attention? I think if can demonstrate that we are actively trying to promote Drupal products more will be created and it will help the Drupal project.

Cheers,
Kieran

Mentors/coaches for proposals

One observation I've had from lurking in the Knight Drupal Initiative meetings is something that's haunted me before. If only I was good at writing a solid grant proposal and subsequent review and revisions, some of my pie-in the sky ideas might actually turn into something valuable for the community (and provide a self-sustainable way for me to contribute). Similarly, with a bit more polish, I could generate some good DROP tasks, ideas for Summer of Code projects, and even sponsorship/funding proposals. While there are good tips and resources, there is (as far as I can tell) no clearly defined support group of actual people who could help with these tasks.

The recent launch of the Knight News Challenge Garage provides a good example of a mentoring group for some of these business/marketing-centric efforts with are often overlooked, yet essential, in forwarding the Drupal project. I could be on the minority here (as often is the case) but I think a dedicated space (possibly a Drupal group) and a platform for coaches/mentors to advise (this could be one potential solution and a project that some might support) would enable myself and a lot of others turn some good ideas into something a bit more substantial.

Curious to hear any other thoughts/ideas on this topic.

Can Ubuntu/Debian and Drupal cooperate on a repository strategy?

Just a few days ago, Ubuntu said it will offer Alfresco CMS. This will sure give Alfresco wider exposure and wider use because it is easier to install using apt-get/aptitude.

While Drupal is already in both Debian's and Ubuntu's repositories, it is quite a few revisions behind on Drupal 5, and no Drupal 6 is available.

The debian pacakge of Drupal has never found a lot of support within the Drupal project and community, mainly because of the fast pace of Drupal's development, and our "user interaction needed" when upgrading (update.php, ...etc.).

So, this is to start a discussion on how to make Drupal more deb/apt friendly, so it would see wider use.

25 Enterprise Social Media Platforms/Companies To Be Aware Of

Related to Kierans post on the Open Source CMS survey, I just encountered a blog entry being hyped on Twitter about the 25 Enterprise Social Media Platforms/Companies To Be Aware Of.

In my comments, I said I was struck by the absence of the leading open source content management systems--WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal--which have become social media platforms in their own right.

I don't know how much credence or play this analysis piece will get, but thought it should be on our radar screen.

Drupal nominated as Best Business Application in LinuxWorld Product Excellence Awards

Drupal has been nominated as one of the three best business applications for the LinuxWorld product Excellence Awards. Starting tomorrow, the judges will be visiting the Drupal booth at LinuxWorld to take a look at Drupal and see how it helps businesses. We were up against a lot of competition and it's great to be nominated in such a competitive field.

Thanks to the booth sponsors HaloSys, Gravitek Labs, AF83, and Acquia for funding the booth in the product section of the expo.

Cheers,
Drupal'n'Go Call For Projects and Participants

cross posting from Drupal For Good, and the french version at the France Group

A community effort to help a NGO get some ass-kicking internet presence — October 4th and 5th, 2008 — Paris, La Cantine Numérique

On the first weekend of October 2008, in only 2 days, the Drupal French Community will build a complete and live website for a selected NGO. All free. Free as in free beer, and free as in free speech.

What’s in it for the selected NGO?

You do not have an internet presence? You have a very lousy one? You want to to do a specific incredibly cool thing on the web?

Please register on the main Drupal n’Go web site (http://www.drupalngo.org/user/register). Then visit http://www.drupalngo.org/en/node/add/applications to fill in the project application form.

Both small and large NGOs can apply. The community will choose a single NGO project.

During the two days of the event we will build for you the most awesome, buzzwordy plateform imaginable, taking care of all aspects and all related costs of such an endeavor.

Unlike traditional web projects, having detailed specifications is not necessary. Our volunteers will help you do that.

Projects the community feels it can really contribute to — not only regarding the implementation but also regarding imagining the solutions, the design and the strategy — will probably get more attention.

And as Drupal is a free and open source software, with a strong ecosystem, the NGO will have total control on its website: no strings attached, no proprietary software to update, and a clear path of evolution.

The registration process ends on September 10th, 2008. The selected NGO will be announced on September 15th, 2008.

Fill in the form on drupalngo.org today, and grab a chance to get the best website money could not buy!

What’s in it for the participants?

As participants we will have developers (both newbies and hard core rockstars), project managers, themers, visual designers, journalists (to cover the event and help editing), information architects, sysadmins, and of course members of the NGO that will be the main stakeholders of the project and anyone else that is willing to come and can give us a hand.

The main idea being that on the evening of the second day, the site will go live to the amazement and pleasure of all :-)

Participants will be able to learn to know each other better, learn how incredibly fast Drupal is when it comes to building websites, improve their skills and exchange on best practices while providing real value to a good cause.

If you want to participate, we invite you to register on the Drupal n’Go web site: http://www.drupalngo.org. There you will be able to fill in the domain in which you are most interested in contributing.

Wait! Can it work? In only 2 days?

Thanks to the agility of Drupal and the large range of talents gathered in the same place at the same moment, yes, it will work.

Intensive coding session on a specific project has always been an essential part of the Drupal community (they are called ‘Code Sprints’) and the Open Source community as a whole. We want to extend this to the full range of the webdesign process, because Drupal alone is tooooo easy!

Even better: we have a really, really good plan.

So what’s the plan?

The basic schedule of the two days will be:

Day One: on Saturday, the first half of the day will be a “normal” DrupalCamp — though there will already be sessions preparing for the later effort. At least two sessions will demonstrate how to work with a big team in a smooth and collaborative way with an introduction to using an SCM and writing issue tickets.

The afternoon will be dedicated to the preparation of the work on the website. Groups will discuss and prepare the information architecture, some of the technical choices, content, functionalities and so on. Also our team will solve any remaining infrastructure questions — even if most will be prepared beforehand.

Day Two: On Sunday most of the “concrete work” will be done. Graphic designers will do their share. Journalists will interview and write awesome pieces. Developers will develop. Integrators will integrate… and project managers will keep us on rhythm.

A lot of preparation work will be done beforehand to ensure we can start working quickly and effectively. There will be integration and testing servers ready, a dedicated code repository and issue tracker, even a live CD with a preconfigured development environment.

But wait, there is even more!

We won’t stop there: we also have a plan for the aftermath. A hosting company (Bearstech) will donate web hosting, there will be training sessions offered to the NGO after the event, and (yet to be determined exactly) community based support for project.

We already have some sponsors and will be calling for more.

The survey shows that three systems lead the CMS brand race: WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal.

http://www.waterandstone.com/downloads/2008OpenSourceCMSMarketSurvey.pdf

The survey shows that three systems lead the race: WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal. The survey concludes that these three systems have opened up a large lead on the rest of the pack to become the dominant brands in the market.

The author, Ric Shreves, states: "WordPress enjoys great brand strength courtesy of two complimentary offerings: the WordPress CMS and the WordPress hosted blogging service. Nonetheless Joomla! is positioned to challenge for the lead in brand awareness." He added, "Though it might be surprising to some, Drupal is not far behind. The survey showed that in the crucial U.S. market, Drupal is essentially tied with Joomla!"

Collaboration Foundation - Vote Needed for Non-Profit Drupal Site

Hi, one of my Drupal friends suggested I post this here.

Our non-profit, The Collaboration Foundation, is a finalist for a $10,000 online 'Ideablob' grant. We need votes to win. The grant would be used to build an innovative non-profit Drupal site that will look like this: http://collaborationfoundation.org/images/web/cf_home.jpg

Please vote here:
http://ideablob.com/ideas/1247-The-Collaboration-Foundation-C

About The Collaboration Foundation
The Collaboration Foundation is a grassroots non-profit arts organization that grew from The 1 Second Film project (currently runs on Drupal). The 1 Second Film has over 10,000 participants in 59 countries. Apple recently donated over $25K in computers to support the project. Our goal is to build an innovative platform for global collaborative art and social-change on a scale only possible when people work together. Our Board of Directors includes Albert Maysles, Juli Taymor, Stephen Nemeth, and Ben Goldhirsh. For more info, please visit www.collaborationfoundation.org

What We Will do With the $10K
If we win the $10K grant, funds will be used to build a non-profit dynamic Drupal site that will provide a global community of participants with free tools to connect, create, and collaborate. Preview the design for our new site here: http://collaborationfoundation.org/images/web/cf_home.jpg

Possible Benefits for Drupal Community
• Creation of a high visibility Drupal for Good project
• Ongoing development of our site could offer tangible training exercises for students in Drupal Dojo. We've talked to some high end Drupal companies about donating project managers to oversee Drupal apprentices in the collaborative development of the Collaboration Foundation's Drupal site.
• Could document the build w/ video and provide learning materials for Drupal Community
• All technology developed for the project will be open and returned to Drupal community.
• We're open to other ideas from Drupal community about meaningful ways our project can give back to the community.

If you would like to support this, please take 30 seconds to vote here:

Voting lasts til July 31.

And please share with friends. If you have any questions, suggestions, etc. about the project, or if interested in being a part of it, please contact me.

Much thanks,

Nirvan Mullick
Drupal in Libraries -- from the ALA

Just saw this publication from the ALA:

http://www.techsource.ala.org/ltr/drupal-in-libraries.html

I have yet to read it, but will pick up a copy soon -- the sample of the text gives a decent idea of what the book is about.

Cheers,

Knight Drupal Initaitive Monthly Proposal Review -- 7 August 2008

We will meet for the next round of proposal reviews on Thursday, August 7th at 15:00 Eastern (US) (19:00 UTC).

This meeting is part of our ongoing monthly review meetings. To be held in #drupal-dojo on IRC [freenode]. (See http://drupal.org/irc for information.)

We will meet for 1:30 with the following agenda:

1) Review current proposals that need decisions:

Participants are asked to review these proposals before the meeting.

-- There are currently no new proposals.

The purpose here is to get eyes on the new proposal, and let the submitter answer questions.

3) Time permitting, work on publicizing the efforts of the KDI.

3 Customers with more than 1000 users in production deployments needed for Gartner social software market assessment

I am working on submitting the Drupal survey response for Gartner's latest research report. We are looking for three customers with 1000 users in a production deployment. Ideally these would be successful deployments and the customer would be willing to have a quick chat with myself to ensure we are providing the right customer reference. Good customer references are the single biggest factor in impacting report recommendations.

From the Gartner Social software market survey

We got interviews from:
Justin C. Klein Keane University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences which is standardizing their department on Drupal as the default CMS courtesy Alex Urevick-Ackelsberg.
BestBuy's BlueShirtNation intranet which has 25 000 users. Steve Bendt responded to my public post in the marketing group.
Tracy Frauzel from Greenpeace UK courtesy Robert Castello
Jupiter Media's Ivan Raszl for Adsoftheworld.com site, courtesy Khalid
SonyBMG Suzi Arnold courtesy Earl and recommended by Angie.
Morris Digital's Steve Yelvington regarding 20 sites and the largest with more than 175 000 users

"You must be able to name at least 3 customers with more than 1000 users (seats) in production deployments. You may optionally include two additional reference customers. If you meet the criteria for inclusion then some of your customer references will be contacted via email or phone. Otherwise we will let you know that we will not be contacting your references. Key points we will be looking for is large scale usage of the products and degree of success."

KDI: Proposal Review

This will be the first of a series of ongoing monthly review meetings. To be held in #drupal-dojo on IRC [freenode]. (See http://drupal.org/irc for information.)

We will meet for 1:30 with the following agenda:

1) Review current proposals that need decisions:

The project sponsors are welcome to answer questions during this review. The possible outcomes of these reviews are:

Submit the proposal to Knight for possible funding.

Reject the proposal, with reasons why.

Ask the proposal to be revised for the next round of review.

2) Introduce the new proposals for review:

The purpose here is to get eyes on the new proposal, and let the submitter answer questions.

3) Decide on a regular time for review meetings. Proposed time is:

-- First Thursday of each month at 15:00 (US/Eastern) / 19:00 UTC.

4) Time permitting, work on publicizing the efforts of the KDI.

Ever wonder what the LADrupal meetups are like?

we're mostly friendly. and mostly fun. but we're pretty geeky. in a cool way, of course. but this month we're a bit melancholy on the news Crystal is leaving us for Seattle. :-/

the good news is that we taped our meeting. ya, real geeky. but LA area is HUGE. and sometimes making it to the meeting in person can be difficult. so there you go... we're geeky but thinking about everyone that wanted to join us, but couldn't.

I hope to tape and stream the next meeting in July - with questions available in real-time in either IRC or dimdim. but that depends on Internet - last two months we've had sketchy connection - whats up with that RMI?! ok, not dogging the venue, cuz its simply awesome... and free, and comes with overhead projector, and TONS of seating. It's just the Inet connection has sucked lately. but we really need internet for some of the presentations.

anyway, back to the point of this post. like a lot of the drupal world we're using blip.tv to post our video. bookmark or digg or del.icio.us, etc our show URL: http://drupal-la.blip.tv. ya, nomenclature just like our IRC channel

the June meeting rocked. I've still got a lot more uploading to do,,, but there's enough up there to keep you occupied. also, Tom Friedhof was cool enough to host the slides for download (since they're bigger than the 1MB limit of groups.drupal.org (gdo). Tom Rocks!

How does Drupal compare to other CMSs?

I originally posted this discussion to the Portland OR DUG and was then asked to repost it here.

Recently NTEN (Nonprofit Technology Network) put out their 2008 CMS Satisfaction Survey. You can find the full text and numbers for this survey on their web page, though it will cost you $50 if you are not a member. They are a valuable nonprofit themselves, so supporting them seems to be a good thing, and this report would go a long way to helping many of you convince your clients to use Drupal, more than you could achieve in $50 of billable time in many cases, so it would be $50 well spent.

In any event I thought I'd at least share the basics of that report, on how Drupal ranked in customer satisfaction and related areas. Remember though that this is not representative of all your clients, but is nonprofit focussed, which is a group probably more likely to use free tools before most others, so it is unlikely that the world at large matches these numbers, fascinating as they are.

Firstly, their original survey had almost 30 CMS systems on it, and yet about 40% of respondents chose, "none of the above." So yes, there are many different CMS systems in use out there. Over 1000 people participated in the survey, with 650 completing the full survey. Only 9 systems received 10 or more assessments, so usage is widespread. Industries the organizations served varied widely.

They split their report into small, medium and large organizations. In small and medium sized organizations, and also in the numbers for overall usage, the most commonly used systems were Drupal, Plone and Joomla (in that order). Large organizations mostly used Convio and GetActive WSM, followed by Drupal and Blackbaud. Drupal was first in both small and medium sized organizations, and third in large organizations. Drupal's real dominance/strength seemed to be in medium-sized orgs.

They also graded systems on various categories, and open source systems did not only dominate usage, but also dominated satisfaction grades, getting mostly As and no score lower than B. With the exception of Antharia, they scored generally higher than commercial systems, and custom CMS were at the bottom of the pile. Drupal, Plone and Joomla fared about the same in this area, with some variation.

About a third of respondents use open source CMSs, and I'd have expected that number to be higher amongst nonprofits, illustrating again how quality open source software has so many mindset obstacles to overcome. Just why do organizations choose proprietary over open, when the research shows that the open system is better, and/or a better value? The good news is that this report finishes by recommending that you use an open source CMS and they provide a list of reasons why this is a good idea. It is something i believe we as a group should also focus on, ways to make it clear how Drupal/Open Source is better, and ways to make it easier to swap to (for example, more modules to make conversion to Drupal from another CMS/Blog tool easy).

They stated some things we all know well, namely that there is no one CMS perfect for every organization. There are also surveys aplenty out there if you want to exercise your google-fu, or for example see this one: Idealware compares Drupal, Joomla and Plone.

Weaknesses of the NTEN survey, for me, include the inclusion of Wordpress, which, while it can mimic basic CMS functionality, is not really a CMS.

There is plenty more in the report, but I thought these the most salient points for us to consider. If you want the full details and the numbers involved you will have to purchase their report.

This call will be recorded, I apologize for the late or night call for European members, but this was the time when Mike was available.

I am pleased to inform the Drupal community that we will be installing an advanced enterprise analytics solution HBX, on Drupal.org. This is possible due to a generous donation of this HBX software, valued at over $10,000. These tools will give very advanced reports of how users are using Drupal.org, which forms they are using successfully, what page flows are working and which ones are not. The goal of these analytics tools is to provide the Drupal community with an ongoing user experience toolkit with which to make improvements to Drupal.org.

We are installing these tools now, to ensure the design firm the Drupal association is hiring in the next several weeks will have a good baseline of how Drupal.org is being used today. These analytics tools are the first of three parts of a new UX toolkit for Drupal.org. The other two parts are improved search engine usage with tracking and user field studies.

This meeting will cover what we've learned from the analytics in the first two weeks and present the Key Performance Indicators that we've initially scoped for Drupal.org. In this web conference we will present these KPIs and have the community propose alternate KPIs we should measure. Our goal is to produce customized reports to help different audiences help improve drupal.org. These audiences include: the drupal.org designers, Drupal association members who are responsible for the Drupal infrastructure, the Drupal infrastructure team, the Drupal.org webmaster team, and members of the community interested in improving Drupal.org.

This meeting will be a web conference using adobe connect presented by Kieran Lal and Mike Bishop.

Planning wiki for Drupal booth at LinuxWorld Expo 8/4-8/7

Are you interested in helping to spread the word about Drupal? LinuxWorld Expo is coming to Moscone Center Aug 4-7. Come share, learn, and have fun with other Drupal and open source fans. LinuxWorld Expo is geared more towards enterprise solutions. If you're interested in open source (beyond Drupal), this is a great opportunity to learn from others and to share what you know about Drupal.

I'm working with Amazon to coordinate the effort to host a booth at LinuxWorld Expo.

If you'd like to volunteer to help spread the word about Drupal and the open source revolution, this is where the party is.

If you've already posted to volunteer in a previous post, please verify I captured that info (below).

Forrester releases study on Web Content management: Out of hundreds of platforms keep your eye on Drupal

Back in May Forester research contacted the Drupal association asking if they could talk to some Drupal customers and vendors. We connected them with a couple of Drupal consulting shops and in turn some of their customers. Here's the report and a nice summary by Matt Asay, from Alfresco:

Quoting the report from Matt's quote:
"For an open source WCM vendor to be relevant, it must have a satisfactory product offering, proven enterprise-level implementations, and a large--and passionate--community of developers and service providers. Currently, enterprises interested in open source should keep an eye on two offerings--Alfresco Software and Drupal--because:

    * Both have taken pages from the commercial vendors' playbooks [i.e., enterprise-class support, stability, etc.]....
    * Technologists praise the product architectures....
    * Both have strong professional communities.

"
Drupal.org redesign business objectives

Drupal.org Redesign Business Objectives

These objectives were developed by Michael Meyers and Laura Scott of the Drupal association.

OVERVIEW:

Writing objectives at the start of a project gives you a solid foundation – a set of clearly defined goals that should guide every step of the initiative. This shouldn’t be about “HOW” we’ll accomplish the redesign (specifics like “ratings for modules” or “we need a CDN to improve site performance”) this is a higher level outline of “WHAT” we need to accomplish (“improve site availability and performance”).

After you have established your objectives, you can then determine the best way to achieve them. Throughout the redesign project, when we come up with these ideas (the “how”) we should constantly ask, “does [this idea] help meet one or more of our business objectives?” and if it doesn’t we shouldn’t be doing it! At the end of the project or a specific phase, these objectives will be used to measure our success or failure – did we meet our objectives?

It’s said that good business objective are SMART: Specific, Measurable, Agreeable, Realistic, and Trackable.

The objectives outlined below are more abstract then SMART and are meant to build consensus in the community. Also, note that any examples of HOW we might work to achieve objectives were provided only to provide context – they are not meant as recommendations or endorsements of any particular idea and are outside the scope of our current goal.

Once we agree on the high level objectives we can then create more specific and measurable ones (i.e. “increase repeat visitors by 20%” vs. “make the site more sticky”, “sub 2 second page load times” vs. “make the site faster”) and THEN we can turn our focus to the how…

OBJECTIVES (in no particular order):

Modernize the Aesthetics and GUI, Leverage the Power of Drupal.

The current site design is stale - web aesthetics have come a long way and so the site does not inspire confidence in terms of professionalism. It also poorly represents the power and modern capabilities of Drupal - it barely takes advantage of the functionality Drupal has to offer.

We need a cleaner, updated look and feel (design) in-line with current market trends, implemented consistently across all of the association properties (association, groups, d.o, etc.). A more appealing, modern, and usable set of sites will make for a much more marketable Drupal.

Re-think of the Information Architecture and Usability

There is inconsistent architecture and it's hard to find information. We need to step back and look at our many properties and re-think the overall structure and organization of the individual sites and re-build from a solid, new foundation. The navigation and IA needs to be more intuitive and approachable, and the various sites or sections of sites need to be more tightly integrated and cross linked.

Important pages shouldn’t be more then two clicks away, we need to leverage non hierarchical ways of organizing content (tagging and improved searching) and there should be consistency in the placement of navigation elements.
We need to cross link and integrate various aspects of the site – for example, when you view a module there should be blocks showing recent related activity on the forums, in docs, issues, etc., with a link to a full rundown (and not like the links we have on project nodes).

We need to introduce missing and important functionality that is found on most successful community sites (trust and credibility metrics, popularity and ratings, etc.).

Contain Expenses and Generate Revenue

Revenue is essential for sustainability but the site does not exist first and foremost to generate revenue – that would change the purpose and tone of the site. We don’t want to overly commercialize the site - we want to find palatable ways of monetizing our properties to generate necessary ongoing revenue that will help fund this redesign, the associations operating costs, and future initiatives.

Increase user participation throughout all aspects of the project (documentation, testing, design, development, etc.)

The Drupal community makes use of social production, which relies on many users contributing to the project. In order to continue to make improvements, we need to continue to make it easier to contribute.

The size of the community activity makes highlighting and parsing that activity very difficult. Participation is easy in some areas, but hard in others. It's hard for people to know where to start, or how to best contribute. The only area where it seems to go well is in actual code contributions.

It’s critical we continue to grow the community - we need to solicit (calls to action) and foster more participation, make it significantly easier for folks to contribute (lower the barriers to entry, provide starting points), etc. It also needs to be easier to follow what’s going on day to day or month to month (in summary), and be more welcoming and transparent to newcomers, outsiders, and the more casual users or evaluators.

Empower and Leverage Drupal Community Members (Crowdsourcing)

We need to empower our member base and leverage their input to improve the quality of, and to help organize the ever growing amount of content and contributions.

For example, we should be tracking the number of views or downloads, and have some type of rating system. We can then enable filtering and sorting based on these metrics, making it easier to find content. We also need to encourage people to add metadata like tags – helping to better organize things – we should encourage as much user editable content as possible.

Facilitate the Product Evaluation Process

Most companies and individuals go through a similar evaluation process prior to adoption – there are common questions and concerns.

Does Drupal have the features I need?
How does it compare to other frameworks or CMS systems?
Who else uses it? Will it scale?
Will I be able to find development resources?
etc.

We need to support and facilitate this process making it easier for the various constituents to evaluate our product.

Increase Downloads and Grow the Install-base

Success is driven by our community and active successful installations of the product – we need to increase downloads, and more importantly increase our conversion rate (folks who just download vs. those who actually continue to use it and find success through it) to build our install base of active users.

Improved, Better Integrated, and More Comprehensive Documentation

Great strides have been made in this area but we need to continue the progress on this critical front.

We need to improve the structure and organization: All docs should be versioned with the appropriate Drupal release. Taxonomy can be leveraged to organize content on more than one axis. Type of documentation, for example: tutorial, review, guidelines, introduction, etc.

We nee to provide better integration (cross linking and referencing), for example help links in the Drupal install process should link users to specific help pages, not the documentation home page.

We need to increase the overall quality of the content, provide deeper and greater coverage of topics, establish and improve standards for all types of documentation, etc.

Make it Easier to Setup, Run, and Support Drupal Installations

Whether your are looking for documentation, modules that best meet your needs, tips on tuning and scaling your configuring, testimonials and tutorials, etc. it needs to be much easier to find what you are looking for.

Improve the Performance and Availability of our Properties

The availability and performance of our properties directly reflect the viability of the product and form an indelible impression of our capabilities. If a users or evaluators go to one of our sites and it’s slow or down, they will wonder if Drupal can scale, if it’s right for their business, etc. It also directly hampers community contributions, time spent on site, etc.

We also need to ensure critical information (api.drupal.org, handbook documentation, etc.) and product downloads (core, modules, themes, etc.) are /always/ available, that we set, track, and meet performance standards (i.e. sub 2 second page load times), and have the necessary tools to monitor and measure our performance.

Internationalization

Drupal caters to an international audience. Our web properties should be available in multiple languages.

MarComm - Promoting the Product and Brand

We need to maximize SEO and have an actionable marketing strategy to go along with this redesign - including supporting collateral to empower grass roots campaigns and viral promotion (buttons, banners, badges, broiler plate copy, etc.)

Insight and Analysis

We have limited insight into site usage. We need a modern real-time analytics solution in place to help us better understand how users navigate the site, what areas are important to them so that we can make informed decisions.

Statistics on Groups.drupal.org growth

I've been working with members of the Drupal association, particularly Jacob Redding and Moshe Weitzman, and the infrastructure team to help calculate some statistics to measure the growth of GDO. I've got a blog post going into more detail coming up. I'll link to it shortly.

Vote in Enterprise 2.0 Launchpad contest: Round 2 with a new Drupal ecosystem section

Acquia would like to thank everyone who voted for our 1 minute video submission for the Enterprise 2.0 contest. We've now made it to the second round and we've added an important section to the video, the Drupal Ecosystem, with dozens of Drupal consulting company logo's.

How did we select these logo's to represent the Drupal ecosystem:
1) Looked for sponsors of Drupalcon Barcelona and Drupalcon Boston
2) Drupal Association Organization Members
3) Organizations that registered on acquia.com as building sites for third parties.

As you can see at 1:48 in the video, the slide is pretty full. With your vote, we can make it to the Launchpad finals in Boston June 9th-12th and this will allow us to further expand on the vendors in the Drupal ecosystem with a longer live presentation. Thanks to everyone who has giving us feedback on how Acquia can fairly promote Drupal and it's partners in these kinds of events, we are listening, learning, and adapting to your suggestions.
