This group will develop tools to assist domestic pet shelters and rescue groups.
There have been a few multi-year discussion of pet tools on Drupal relating to integration with Petfinder and other shelter management systems.
Drupal's database integration provides an excellent basis for presenting pets for adoption, volunteer coordination, and event planning.
I came across RescueGroups.org which provides tools to shelters and rescues.
Their tool allows users to input adoptable pet information and have it transferred to the pet adoption portals.
My goal is to gather data from shelters and rescues on their pets which were found and have them posted on our site, using the company's API.
If anyone else is interested let me know.

Our missing pet web site is up and running. We create a flier and send it to vets, retailers and shelters. From what I have seen we are the only free service to do this.
If you work with an animal company you can check if we have contact info at http://www.petnotice.com/flier
One problem we have is the site does not handle even a moderate number of visitors well. When more than a few people are using it, the vps appears to become overloaded and has to be restarted. nginx has been installed but does not seem to help much because our content is not static (my guess).Read more
i recently came across this conversation in which a small successful shelter is still processing all its pets with hard copy paperwork, no shelter management software.
i offered to learn and help but the main preceived problem seems to be a lack of high speed internet in the region.
if anyone can help with a solution, please check it out. i will be happy to host a program on my vps or do anything else if it can be part of a solution.
i have never used shelter management software but would like to learn.Read more
The next step is to create a directory of vet offices and other animal related businesses which can be contacted when a pet in the area is reported lost or found.
I have run across two modules, Node Import and User Import.
User Import description page sounds more promising.
The goal is to have nodes which can then be sorted by proximity using OpenLayers Proximity, then contacted by fax, using some external program I am guessing.
Created a forum issue here if anyone has thoughts: http://drupal.org/node/983650Read more
To promote the site and support shelters and rescues, we have begun a Photo Fundraiser.
Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
In the subject line put city and state or zip code. Attach a pet photo.
For each photo received we will donate $1 to a shelter or rescue.
For full details see: http://www.thepetrn.com/fundraiser
If you work with a shelter or rescue please spread the word. We would like to work with smaller groups and increase transparency and public support.
I would like to allow people to:
1-Take a photo with a phone
2-Send the photo to the web site
3-Thereby creating a node, and
4-Receive an auto from response which allows the person to add details and respond to potential owner inquiries.
Idea came from sites such as Youtube, I think, allow uploading files by texting to a specific number, so am looking around to see what is possible.
I barely use a mobile phone so this is new territory.
With the primary initial aspects of the web site closer to completion, I am adding a space for discussion of shelters and rescues.
The whole world seems to be talking about No Kill, lots of people misuse the term, there are good and bad shelters, and I would like to know more about what is happening in my local shelters. Personally I think there should be 100% transparency when pets are involved, especially shelter and such.
I considered a Wiki, but there is no set process for that within Drupal. A wiki may not be exactly what I want, a more controlled environment is likely better.Read more
Moved from a shared host to vps.
There are permission errors and I think it is related to the type of server.
Previously my settings.php was 400 and now it is at least 444.
Several files are not writeable and the Image module had to be uninstalled.
Site is faster but not much productive got done this weekend.
The current project is to allow people to pre-register pets.
People will be able to include information on a pet tag that will allow a finder to look up information on the pet.
Users will be able to look at a pet tag, which will include -> 9PUP.COM + #.
At the web site www.9pup.com, user will be prompted for the ID# (which is the node id) and a pet or owner name, and pull up the pet profile (via Finder module).
The primary web site is www.missingpups.com which is too long for a pet tag.Read more
got OL proximity to work, trying to find out how to integrate Amazon S3 for video and image storage.
Got proximity to work in browsing nodes. Need to set up proximity alerts.
Currently trying to figure out how to host adoption videos on Amazon S3. Lots of modules but also lots of comments that it will be easier with Drupal 7.
I have decided to devote large chunks of my life to learning Openlayers, Openlayers Proximity, and Rules to incorporate into a missing pet web site.
I finally figured out Location, but, Notification Proximity does not appear to function with current Notification.
Openlayers plus Rules appears to allow for proximity and this is very important to alerting people about newly reported pets in their area.
If anyone has experience with Openlayers or Rules, please contact me. I know this is easier than it looks, I have spent hours on Openlayers already....
I recently created a web site for lost, found, and adoption notices for domestic pets. The goal is to assist the general public as well as shelters and rescues. In my area the main way to rehome a pet by private individual is a Craigslist posting, which is inefficient. I am not affiliated with any other animal welfare group.
There is one discussion on Petfinder integration. http://drupal.org/node/240993Read more
