Theme creation from PSD file for newspaper/media site using mainly panel pages and mini-panels from panels 2 | Media Company
I would like to form a relationship with a contractor that can create theme(s) based on photoshop designs which we will provide. The majority of the site(s) are using panels 2 - panel pages and mini-panels to deliver views to the reader. I prefer working with those experienced with working with Drupal for newspaper / magazine / media related sites and can show examples of the previous work performed.
Our immediate need is for 1 theme to created but we're in the process of migrating many of our sites to Drupal.
Please contact me through my drupal.org contact form.
The Public Press, a new daily newspaper for the San Francisco Bay Area
The Public Press www.public-press.org is a concept for the next-generation daily newspaper. We're organizing a group of journalists, technologist and nonprofit managers to organize a new newsroom for the San Francisco Bay Area that would produce a Web site, daily print newspaper and collaborations with nonprofit news-gathering organizations locally and nationally. We've built a simple Drupal 6 site that we will be growing in the coming weeks and months, and we plan to start publishing on the Web using this platform.
College newspapers and Drupal
This thread is for colleges/universities who currently use or are planning to use Drupal.
My name is Greg Linch and I'm the editor of The Miami Hurricane at the University of Miami (Florida, USA).We're in the early stages of building our site.
To kick off the conversation, here are some blogs and posts discussing our redesign:

Schamper: our student newspaper on Drupal
We've recently redesigned our website, so I took the time to do a small writeup and look back on our switch to Drupal a while ago. Hope you enjoy the read.
Making the transit from Textpattern to Drupal
DotNetNuke for newspapers?
The magazine I'm web editor for is planning on rebuilding the web site. Main candidate has been Drupal, but yesterday DotNetNuke was suggested as an alternative. (DNN was said to have all/many of the features we were looking for right out of the box.)
I've been trying to find useful comparisons between DNN and Drupal, but so far only with modest success. (For example, opensourcecms.com doesn't have DNN, and cmsmatrix.org mainly lists a number of labels which are difficult to understand and not always relevant.)
Student newspaper switch
Hiya, I'm the "technical advisor" for a small student newspaper that's going to switch to Drupal, and I'll share my experiences up 'till now. When I started out the workflow was almost non-existent: articles spread over word-files, e-mails, corrected printouts and more word-files all in one unstructured heap. So under my guidance we switched to a modified version of TextPattern (I created some hacks for managing editions, workflow for the editors, and last but not least automatic XML export tailored for use in InDesign).
Upcoming Meetings Heads Up
Space is open! If you're interested in presenting please add a comment or contact Boris or myself. It can be as informal as a 15 minute review of your experience with a module. We encourage non-technical presentations on how Drupal did or didn't meet expectations, as well as the presentations only a developer could love.

Hello from Odesskiy Listok
Hello everyone! I am happy to share the good news with you.
We have finally Drupalized the website for Odesskiy Listok, a (mostly) Russian language newspaper, founded in 1872 in Odessa, Ukraine and published since 1994 in the USA. You will find the new version of our site at http://www.OdessaPage.com/new/
First step with a Drupal-built newspaper site
Hi everybody,
My name is Jo - an exclusive Joomla web developper - but I had to reconsider this state since I plan to run a newspaper website and also after a quick visit within the drupal community. Here are the main points of my project:
- an online newspaper regrouping many authors and editors living in different countries
- manage their work by using a groupware and collaboration solution
- manage premium users with payment subscriptions and a possibility of getting dats to perform a marketting surveys
- manage classified ads
HOWTO make a news site with Drupal
We're finally getting ready to port our main site to Drupal (so far we've only been dipping our toes with our blogging site). We've been holding back waiting for 5.0.
There seems to be many ways to go about it. It would be a fantastic help for us (and hopefully others) if some of you who has been through the process of building a newspaper site out of Drupal would share some of your insights.
So: How did you do it?
It would be great to hear things like:
-
- Which modules do you use?
- Which content types do you have? Custom made or by CCK?
- How do you use taxonomy?
- Do you use one or more themes?
- How is your workflow when articles are imported from the print edition?
- How about performance - do you use caching?
- What about premium content?
- What do you use for handling advertising?
- What does your back end look like?
- How did you build your front page?
- How do you handle images?
- How do you handle trolls and spam?
- Your basic setup: Do you run everything (newspaper, blogs, community etc.)from the same install?
and tons of other stuff I haven't even thought of.
Maybe even this very basic one: Why did you choose to go with Drupal instead of alternatives like Ellington?
It would be great if this thread could become just a collection of case studies. It could be a great way to attract more newspapers to Drupal. I cant wait to contribute with our own case - in hopefully in less than four months!
All the best
Nikolai
