Google Apps for Student Email Accounts?

I work at a small college and historically the students are not given an email account but can use their personal email account for "school business" The problem is that students have email addresses like "sexybabe123@example.com"

Does your school give out a school email address for students to use?
What platform is used to manage students emails (exchange, etc)? Specifically, does anyone have experience with using google apps as their provider? Google apps seems like a great way to go but what the disadvantages?

Course Database

I am working bringing and old drupal site up to date and replacing the current course database from something made in Visual Basic to something in Drupal.

I have created a content type with a bunch of CCK and taxonomy to categorise the course but I am having some troubles and I am hoping I can get some feedback on best practices to creating an online course database. Some of the problems I am having:

  1. The same class can be offered by distance, intensive (1 week long) or standard semester. Do I create three different nodes, one for each time the class is offered?

Google released an open source "learning platform"

http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2010/05/cloudcourse-enterprise-app...

However, connecting our expert teachers to eager students around the globe can be a complicated business. To that end, we are excited to release our new internal learning platform, CloudCourse under an open source license. Built entirely on App Engine, CloudCourse allows anyone to create and track learning activities. CloudCourse also offers calendaring, waitlist management and approval features.

Thoughts?

Context sensitive Image-based quiz questions

Alright, so I'm not sure if this is the place to start but I am. I'm looking for feedback to a concept that's currently being kicked around my office. Every summer starts the "what neat thing can we give back to Drupal and improve our courses" discussion and this was the concept that I came up with this year. I'm trying to gauge what the interest level would be if I were to integrate this as a quiz question instead of just my purely stand-alone implementation that I had originally conceived:

Here's the use-case:
* You want to quiz / self-check students on a concept

Tracking User Progress - has anyone done it?

I was stumbling aruond drupal.org and found two modules: http://drupal.org/project/content_complete and http://drupal.org/project/complete

Now I'm not entirely sure if either will do what I want but it seems like both at least are heading in the right direction. I'm looking for some kind of if/then logic in that when a user completes task x they get %y added to their total. In my use-case it's % completed of a course or lesson. Has anyone else used either of these projects or do any kind of user progression tracking?
