A little off-topic, but it seems to me there could be a nice fit with this initiative– code tools for journalists while learning more about being a journalist: Still seeking coders interested in journalism.

The Public Press www.public-press.org is a concept for the next-generation daily newspaper. We're organizing a group of journalists, technologist and nonprofit managers to organize a new newsroom for the San Francisco Bay Area that would produce a Web site, daily print newspaper and collaborations with nonprofit news-gathering organizations locally and nationally. We've built a simple Drupal 6 site that we will be growing in the coming weeks and months, and we plan to start publishing on the Web using this platform.

This is not a Drupal job per se, but all of the New America Foundation's sites are Drupal-based, so a "power user" who's familiar with and interested in the Drupal community would be ideal. Details below, and at http://www.newamerica.net/about/employment_opportunities/6956

The New America Foundation is seeking a managing editor for NewAmerica.net to help improve and expand our online presence. The ideal candidate will have a love of both journalism and technology, and be keenly interested in a wide range of public policy.

I have a client with a great Drupal project at hand, and I am unable to work on it for them.

The Drupal site relates to journalism, and will likely be structured in a similar way to many journalism websites.

In addition, there will be a decent amount of taxonomy, views, CCK, and tpl.php work as the client wants to have nodes browsable by various criteria.

You'll come in early into the project, and so your insights will assist as the specifications are written. I will also offer some of my ideas generated from early brainstorming sessions.

Ifra, the international technical organization for newspapers, is sponsoring a three-day summit/workshop on citizen media 2-4 July at the Park Royal Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. The official description follows:

Thursday I flew up to Michigan to see a group of Medill School of Journalism (Northwestern University) students make their final Media Management class presentation.

Each year, Rich Gordon's class undertakes an innovation project, usually in partnership with a media company. This year they did two projects -- one with a Morris newspaper, the other with Yahoo.

Hi, I am Subir Ghosh. I run Newswatch (www.newswatch.in). I am essentially a journalist, but I create my own sites too. Newswatch is based on WordPress. It was made with NucleusCMS earlier. And then I had to migrate to WordPress because of its robust category structure and of course perfect search results. I have a created a few other magazine sites for a few friends.. all using WordPress. It was a toss-up between WordPress and Drupal and I settled for the former. Primarily because of its more design flexibility, pagination possibilities, etc.

I've made test installations of Drupal before and, frankly, found its philosophies and implementation confusing, unfriendly and unnecessarily techy (concepts not explained in English). The prospect of editing themes and tinkering to achieve custom results seemed daunting.

Now I see this group, I'd like to ask your views on using Drupal to run an online news(paper) for journalism school students. That is, something with which undergrads can be introduced to and would practice the fundamentals of online journalism, from story publishing to blogging.
