This week I had a talk with Mixel Kiemen, who is an assistant at the MOSI research & teaching group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It seems that he is in a better position to lead an effort for a European Grant application for Drupal development.

He started a group at http://groups.drupal.org/academics
Apparently there was to much overlap with http://groups.drupal.org/drupal-research-and-academia so he joined this group.

After Boston and the introduction of Long term Drupal, the semantic web has been getting a lot of attention. Kristof suggest expert meeting for semantic web in a recent post. I like the idea much, although I would not restricted it to semantic web (but as every one will be interested in it, it will be the focal point any way). I think a list of short goals (Drupal7 or Drupal8) versus long term goals are needed. The long term goals will require more than two years and experiments may get organized more collaborative than has been the case in the past.

Currently I'm taking up contact with the FP7 contact points to see if we can setup expert meetings. If you check the FP7 site, you'll notice it can fit many of the pillars in general but non in particular. Some creativity will be needed according to the contact point. ... To be continued

DrupalCon Europe for London?

I saw some brief discussion about DrupalCon Europe being in London next time. Anyone got any thoughts on that? Is anyone actually working on a proposal? Seems to me if it's going to happen, it will need a concerted effort from UK-based Drupal developers and businesses. Be curious to see if anything's going on/anyone is giving this any thought. The publicity would be great for all of us! :-)

The ICT - INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES workprogramme from the European commission has calls for applications that could fit a Drupal project. Especially Objective ICT-2007.4.2 (ICT-2007.4.4): Intelligent Content and Semantics is very interesting, anybody interested in collaborating on a grant proposal for this?

Target outcome
Medium term:
a) Advanced authoring environments for the creation of novel forms of interactive and
expressive content enabling multimodal experimentation and non-linear story-telling.

DrupalCon vs. SuperHappyDrupalHouse

When I was recently down in the Bay Area, I connected with some Drupal folks and talked about planning for upcoming activities.

Since our last "con" was in North America, if we follow previous series, then the next one should be in Europe.

My personal current plans around this are to organize a DrupalCon around BarCamp Brussels / EuroOSCON 2006 in Brussels. Dries is presenting in Brussels, and Colin Brumelle just got word that his talk on "Music 2.0" has also been accepted.

The "cons" generally are a mix of developer and user work, and we've had lots of presentation-style content. Coding tends to be limited to (sometimes very successfull) hallway and hotel hacking. I think the timing and place of DrupalCon Brussels is probably a good one, but how do we make sure we get some fun hacking in?
