Against the idea of a business directory module

We built a business directory using Drupal 6 with Solr 3.4 integration. See http://www.webnetwork.com.au

I personally am against building a "business directory" module as I see it would be limiting. Business directory websites can vary so greatly in features so it would be much better to use configurations of different Drupal modules to create a specific set of features rather than a business directory module per se.

In our directory, some of the core modules we used:

Apache Solr
Solr Location
content profile integration extending user profiles

An Example

The theme developer that I use has posted a new Drupal theme that is set up to display a directory structure. You can see it here:

http://www.themeshark.com/demo/westcoast/

It is pretty sparsely populated, but for example you can search in "Cars >> Cars and Trucks" or "Buy and Sell >> Electronics". It apparently just uses standard modules (e.g., Views, Taxonomy). I downloaded it (as a customer), but have not looked into the details yet. At least it shows some things that can be done, however.

Building local directory sites more like wp-localbiz

Hello! I need a little help (and apology if this is not the right place to do this..)

This is based on the wordpress plug-in wp-localbiz. However, it will be more than that!

I am not looking for a "clone", especially a wordpress clone!. wp-localbiz is more aimed at a single web-site - I want to implement a directory. More like Net Space Profits. So this is a merger of two ideas - and on Drupal 7, of course.

Scheduling using Drupal

We just launched a Drupal based sports/fitness Web site/directory, My Gym and Trainer. In the future, we are hoping to add scheduling capabilities for the various gym and trainers that maintain listings on the site. Does anyone know a good solution to implement this? I looked at scheduling modules for Drupal but didn't find much. <a href="http://drupal.org/project/merci" title="Drupal MERCI scheduling module>MERCI seems to be promising but it's more focused on inventory management than class scheduling.

Yelp-like site with Drupal

Hi,
I would like to make a Yelp-like site with Drupal.
I think there are a lot of people interested in this.
Could a more experienced user write a good tutorial so as to help the others?
Which modules should we use?

Thanks in advance for your time

Openlayers Proximity Search

Hi guys,

I haven't given up on a business directory yet, just waiting for Drupal technology to advance a little bit.

Here is something cool that I found. Could be the killer app that establishes Drupal as the go to platform for any directory that is location based.

What do you think?

A tutorial on integrating OpenLayers Geocode with Finder Module

Hi All,

This is a crummy tutorial. However, in my defense I did spend the last 2 hours putting it together and countless hours trying to figure these modules to do it in the first place. It is probably for the intermediate to advanced Drupal user, mostly because I'm sure there are some mistakes in it, some intermediary steps missing and I didn't make it very elegant.
