Twin Cities

Welcome to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Drupal Group. This is the place to get involved with the Drupal community in the Twin Cities. Whether you're not even sure how to pronounce the word "Drupal", you're a core contributor to the Drupal project or you're somewhere in between, there's something happening locally for you.

We have several regular meetings each month:

  • The main Twin Cities Drupal User Group (TCDUG) meeting is conducted in a presenter or roundtable format, and is sponsored by Advantage Labs. TCDUG meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7 PM.
  • One hour before the TCDUG meeting -- 4th Wednesday of every month at 6PM -- join the Twin Cities Drupal Commerce and Ubercart group to discuss Drupal e-commerce best-practices.

    Both meetings take place at:
    Advantage Labs @ Intermedia Arts
    2822 Lyndale Ave S
    Minneapolis, MN 55408
    map

This is near the corner of Lake and Lyndale. There is parking in the lot to the right of the building (north side).

  • If you'd prefer a more casual meetup, we have a longstanding Drupal Happy Hour on the 1st Thursday of the month starting at 5:30PM. We typically meet at The Blue Nile on East Franklin in Minneapolis. Look for the specific event announcement closer to the actual date each month for up to date details.

Catch us on IRC in #drupal-twin-cities on irc.freenode.net. Join us there to ask questions, propose ideas, socialize. Check out Drupal.org for more info about IRC and Drupal including how to start an account and connect. Or come to the next local meetup and someone can help you get started.

New Years Resolution: Learn to write tests' Workshop

Start:
2010-01-09 10:30 - 12:15 America/Chicago
Organizers:

Cross 'Learn to write tests in Drupal' off your New Year's resolutions - first thing in the New Year!

This is part of the Twin Cities Drupal Testing Weekend
You should plan to stay for the Test Sprint. This introduction is geared to get everyone you ready for the Test Sprint.

This introduction to test writing workshop is geared for people who have used Drupal and know some PHP. If you can write Drupal modules or theme a Drupal website, you should be just fine. (Don't worry, you don't have to write amazing modules or themes, either.)

Twin Cities New Years Test Sprint and 'New Years Resolution: Learn to write tests' Workshop

Back in October, we had a 'Testing testing' discussion. Six (or so) local Drupal people met up. We talked about doing a testing-related event here in the Twin Cities.

Today is December 2, and seriously, no one is going to be able to do testing a testing event until the New Year. :)
But that's cool, because I am sure that most of us would put 'learn how to write tests' on our list of new years resolutions.

So let's get it over with first thing in 2010!

Does January 9 (Saturday) or January 10 (Sunday) work for people who might like to attend or host this event?

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE...

Reminder: No TC Drupal Users Group on Wednesday November 25

The regular monthly TC Users Group Meeting for November was moved to the third Wednesday, November 18 to take into account the regular date's proximity to the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no meeting this Wednesday evening. Look for the upcoming announcement of the December meeting which, like November's, will move to the third Wednesday, December 16, instead of the regular fourth Wednesday date.

**TONIGHT** 11/18/09 TC Drupal Users Group Meeting

Start:
2009-11-18 19:00 - 21:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:

Tonight, tonight, tonight...

Besides being an atrociously awful Genesis pop song, it's the date for the next TC Drupal Users Group Meeting. At last month's meeting, the attendees voted to move the meeting up a week and combine it with the Ubercart Users Group meeting (3rd Wednesday regular meeting) since the regular date would be the night before Thanksgiving. What we did not do was let everyone know with much notice. Apologies.

drupal_lookup_path() redux

Here's a little more information on the patch I mentioned last night (by Wim Leers):

<

blockquote>
drupal_lookup_path() optimization - skip looking up certain paths in drupal_lookup_path()

Description
Why?
To reduce the number of queries per page that are completely useless, I've written this optimization.

Configuration
You get a new config page at admin/build/path/skiplist to modify the skiplist. The paths listed here can include wildcards as well as '', in the exact same way you can configure on what pages a block should (not) be listed.

What has changed to make this work?

Zen theme hacking

I'm hankering for a couple few hours of friendly Zen theme building with like-minded buddies.

Options:

Coffeee shop with loud, obnoxious people and bad internet

OR

My place where the intertubes are strong, the tea flows like the rivers of Babylon and where a 16-year old cat basks in the sun.

This can be a joint project or separate projects where we get to benefit from asking one another questions and getting feedback.

WYSIWYG API

I've been looking more closely at the inner working of the WYSIWYG API stuff, in particular as it relates to markItUp!. I've written up some of my thoughts on extending markItUp! within the WYSIWYG API and it occurs to me that there might be others in the area who are interested in either customizing their own WYSIWYG editors or understanding how this all works.

If you are interested in working on this to collaborate and learn let me know.

Grants and Programs for Participation in Drupal/Open Source

A few nights ago, I listened to the mp3 from this Drupalchix panel at the DrupalCamp LA. (And many congrats to the organizers Rain Breaw and Nicole Bluto for their smart leadership!) http://2009.drupalcampla.com/drupalchix (see also, http://groups.drupal.org/node/23188)

One of the speaker/facilitators (Rain, I believe) talks about the film industry and how grants are available to support and encourage aspiring women directors. I definitely know a number of women who were able to develop their own visions and voices with the support of various arts grants.

THE DEADLINE FOR THIS RFP IS 11/20/2009

SSCO Web Redesign Project RFP
October 27, 2009

Overview
The current SSCO Web site was made in 2004. At the time, the new Web was well received and met the needs of the organization. Since then, Web technology has taken off and the SSCO Web seems dated and lacks interactivity. Furthermore, the SSCO has subscribed to a variety of other Web 2.0 (list serve, Facebook, Flickr, etc.) products that are not integrated with the SSCO Web.

2009-11-05 17:30 - 20:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:

Well, it looks like I will be around until Nov 08. I won't be able to make the meeting on Wed, but I just want to put in the Nov Happy Hour which I can come to. Chach had said somewhere along the line that we should go to Pizza Luce (in Seward) so I am sticking with that.

Drupal Happy Hour does not usually have an agenda and no one usually opens up a laptop. It's usually just a time to meet each other, catch up, and talk about the Drupal goodness! Hope to see you all there.

TC Drupal Users Group Meeting

Start:
2009-10-28 19:00 - 21:00 America/Chicago
Organizers:

This month, we're proposing a wide-open topic -- Managing Drupal Development Projects.

It seems that every time we meet, discussions break out about how creating a Drupal site is different from other web projects. People have questions about process, tips about time management and bidding, horror stories and -- best of all -- ideas related to knowledge sharing and collaboration.
