Back at DrupalCon Chicago, Dries outlined a strategy for Drupal 8 involving a series of "gates" that would help ensure core quality in a number of different categories.Read more
I have always found the user management aspect of Drupal sorely lacking.
With all the other improvements to Drupal 7 I naively thought user management would make the list. Disappointment has come.
Why doesn't Drupal 7 Core allow you to do the following SIMPLE things:
- admin/people show you how many users you have, total, as well as census by:
- admin/people allows you to not just filter by role/user/status but by username
Why? do you ask?Read more
As most of you are aware that we completed a successful round of usability testing with 8 participants new to Drupal at the University of Minnesota in May 2011. Yayy! Thank YOU everyone involved in making this work. I was pleased to see the attention this study is getting on the issue queue (tagged with “UMN 2011”) and at various conferences including DCL. But this is just uncovering the tip of the iceberg, a lot more needs to be tested and be reported to the community. As a part of this, I plan to explore various avenues to conduct more studies.Read more
Anyone spotted the demo for the Twenty Eleven theme for Wordpress 3.2 - http://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com
I think its worth us tearing this apart and looking at the ideas they have bought in, I've only played with it briefly and its pretty nice actually. That said my initial impression was not so favorable (omg this is lame), however the more I play around with and uncover its various features the more I like it.Read more
I have just discussed within my company, www.ideup.com, about helping with further tests. We already have a usability lab with a camera and are willing to set up everything needed to bring a group of people to perform the tests.
Webchick says that there are more areas of Drupal 7 to be tested by people who does not know Drupal. Could anyone help me out to find them? Which are the top priorities at the moment?Read more
Principles are important. They ensure consistent and fair decision making and they set objectives for us all to work towards. Most of all, they keep us honest.
We've been looking at establishing a set of principles that encapsulate our intentions in this initiative and give designers a strong story of Drupal. It would be great to get some feedback on the principles we have been working on.Read more
(quick initial stab at collecting our Drupal specific usability resources, so no links to Apple interface guidelines and the like please :-)

The Design Initiative has three main goals - build a new core theme, build a new collaboration site for designers, and community outreach. The new core theme initiative is well under way and we're tantalizingly close to design.drupal.org becoming a reality. What we need to do now is step up a gear and start thinking about outreach.Read more
Context can mean many things, especially in Drupal. What I want to talk about is what context relates too from a device perspective.
Broadly I think this equates too:
It is device capabilities and constraints plus the fact that mobile devices are with you anywhere and everywhere.Luke Wroblewski
How does the ambiguous location of the user affect their browsing experience? Which device capabilities are going to affect how they view and use the site?Read more
A big part of any user experience is usability. It's the first step toward an engaging and seamless experience.
There are three key areas that will be the focus of the formal mobile usability tests:
- User Input
Currently Drupal's admin interface fails one and two almost instantly on small and touch screens. All three need a wide range of tests before we can confidently address these issues. I'd like it if people could weigh in based on previous experience.
I'll be posting more about the usability tests soon.
join top drupal designers and developers for 2 days of focussed workshops, sessions & discussions on design and drupal. This event will shake the very foundation of Drupal & how druplicon looks at itself will it end up purple ?
Verity is a part time administration assistant for a cancer support charity. She is working part time while she completes her Social Care Diploma. Before she left work to study, Verity was a Personal Assistant in the Finance Sector. Verity is in her late twenties. She is quite proficient with the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel etc.), and she uses Facebook and email but she doesn’t consider herself very good with technology.
To scope this discussion - this is about our new core theme for Drupal 8 and who it will serve, and how they will use it.
Its not possible to design and build something that will suit everyone, so we have been working on narrowing it down to identify who might use our new core theme and what their needs might be.
I have expanded on this and tried to think about skill-sets, constraints, features and what type of sites might they be building.Read more
We need to start thinking and talking about what approaches we're going to take in Drupal 8 with regards to design for mobile.
My own opinion is that we should probably be looking really closely at responsive design and how we might apply or adapt the patterns emerging in that field. The idea of "one web" and a unified design and user experience independent of device appeals to me. I don't want an impoverished mobile experience, so please don't assume what I want to see or do just because I'm on a tablet or handset.Read more
Recently I was lucky enough to have a lengthy discussion with Jane Wells, the lead User Interaction designer for Wordpress. During the call she raised the interesting topic of cross app UI design. If you're not sure what that means let me briefly explain - in short it means that apps like Drupal, Wordpress and Joomla could use the same UI designs or patterns to give site users a consistent UX (user experience).Read more
Amazing replies and talent. Job has been filled! Thank you to everyone who replied so quickly.
Looking for a theming ninja. Convert two Drupal 6.X sites to a new theme. Remote OK but Chicago area prefered. For blog & PR sites, both pretty simple. Great pay for the right person. Send me links of your work.
