Organization Profile

The Quixote Center is a multi-issue nonprofit organization working for peace and social justice. We help build houses and communities in rural Nicaragua; plant trees and hope in deforested regions of Haiti; and work to end the death penalty in the U.S., among other activities.

We have been using Drupal since 2005, and we are in the process of converting all our issue websites to Drupal. In the fall of 2006 we used Drupal to help publish newspaper ads calling for the U.S. to stop improper interference in the Nicaraguan presidential elections. The ads were signed by over 1,000 U.S. citizens, many of whom signed online through a Drupal-based system. (see http://quest.quixote.org/handsoff) We hope to polish our custom code into a signature ad module and release it to the community.

Other Drupal sites we maintain are http://haiti.quixote.org - http://cso.quixote.org - http://womensjusticecoalition.org

Personal

Real Name
Andy Laken
About Me

I started programming at age 11 (TRS-80 and Apple II) but ended up doing liberal arts in university. I've been working on the web for over 10 years, in just about every role there is (designer, producer, IA, programmer) and I've used technologies such as ASP, Java/JSP/Struts, Cold Fusion, and .NET. Now that I've found Drupal I plan to concentrate most of my development work on the platform.

I'm a co-director in charge of technology at the Quixote Center - that includes taking care of all the technology needs of around 20 workers, so I have much less time than I would like available for web development. With the new year and the release of Drupal 5 I hope to be coding a lot more.
