TRUE/FALSE: "Open source is not accessible compliant."

Recently, the Chief Information Officer for the Government of Canada - Alex Benay - posted on LinkedIn, seeking input on the following:

"Open source is not accessible compliant."

I'm writing a formal response and wanted to get feedback from the community, specifically the working group on Drupal accessibility.

While we can only speak to accessibility in Drupal, I think it's important to have well-formed arguments that disprove this statement. This is definitely the best place to get those from.

Looking forward to your responses.

Interested in accessibility assistance

Working with several state education grants and even directly with a state education department, my organization has gotten a fair amount of training in accessibility over the last couple of years.

I would like to help the group apply that training to Drupal Core and contributed modules and themes.

I posted an issue to IMCE to increase its accessibility. What can be done to advance it?

Hi!

I recently posted an issue to IMCE to make it more accessible (link below). I also noticed that IMCE is listed as one of the modules this group (the Drupal Accessibility Group) has listed on its Wiki page as one that it would really like to take the #D8AX pledge. What can be done to advance this issue? Do "vote up" numbers help? Do "followers" help?

Thanks,
Richard

Accessible Drupal Teasers

We're running into the adjacent links issue in our custom-themed Drupal teasers where a teaser image (linked) floats left, next to the node title (also linked), a short description text (trimmed body text) and a "Continue reading" (i.e., more link).

The DOM looks roughly like this:

<

article class="node__teaser">

Only local images are allowed.

[node:title]

WEB COMPONENTS, POLYMER AND DECOUPLING DESIGN IN DRUPAL

Wanted to reference this here in case people didn't see it. We've got https://drupal.org/project/webcomponents module able to go straight from polymer templates to display modes to field UI to rendered output. This completely by-passes the traditional tpl / template file workflow and allows front-end to dictate design to backend (instead of in Drupal where it's usually a mish-mash of both). It's also by-reference so updating your templates sees them updated in Drupal.
