Drupal 8 - Core Initiatives Progress Update - 9/15/11 Edition

What this is about:
We've been hearing a lot from the community about wanting more transparency with regard to the Drupal 8 initiatives and their advancement. Every two weeks, the Drupal 8 initiative owners, along with Dries, webchick, and a team of project managers have “scrum of scrum” calls where each person goes around and talks about what they worked on since last time, what they’re going to work on for next time, where they’re blocked, and how the community can help.

Configuration Management Initiative code sprints in September and October

I will be attending spending a lot of time traveling to Drupal events in September and October, and I am hoping to run CMI initiative code sprints at all of them! There will be other initiative owners at the US events as well, so I would not be surprised to see coding going on around those topics as well. Our main focus here will be around the file-based config system and enhancements to the entity system. For those who are not local to these events, you can join #drupal-cmi on IRC to participate virtually.

So Long, Internet Explorer 6

On September 11, 2011, the Drupal project scored a huge win. Dries Buytaert committed a patch, officially dropping IE6 support in Drupal 8! This is exciting news for Drupal, as it will allow us to get rid of some legacy baggage, and use more clean and modern coding techniques. It also translates to less of a burden for contributors.

State of Drupal presentation (August 2011)

Three weeks ago, at DrupalCon London, I gave my traditional State of Drupal presentation. In good tradition, you can download a copy of my slides (PDF, 37 MB) or you can watch a video recording of my keynote. In my presentation, I talk a lot about Drupal 8 and some of the things that matter to the many Drupal users.

English WSCCI (announcement)

The original post by Crell has been removed from the core group since this is an annoucement-only group (no discussions):

I think most people have finally recovered from DrupalCon London (woohoo!), so it's time to pause and take stock of all that happened. London was actually a huge boost for the Web Services and Context Core Initiative (WSCCI).

Looking for volunteers to take part in a server environment survey

We are looking for volunteers to take part in a server environment survey, specifically focused on SQLite support. We are considering making SQLite required or at least prioritized for the Drupal installation process. Before making such a decision we want to get a good feel for the availability of SQLite in hosting environments. If you host sites through multiple providers we would appreciate results from each to ensure we get the most accurate data.

Depending on the success of this survey we may be able to use this process for making future decisions.

To submit results please follow these steps:

  1. Download the Sample module and install it on as many hosts as you see fit
  2. Visit admin/sample
  3. Submit the results

The results will be sent to a central server and can be accessed at

If you want to get involved or are interested in the details please see the SQLite issue in core (Generate minimal SQLite environment and use to install Drupal in full environment), but we would ask that you refrain from simply posting your opinion on SQLite.

Strategies for big core patches

There have been several discussions in the past about the difficulty of getting large patches into core. And between D8 initiatives and everyone's general plans this is going to be coming up a lot as 8.x gets moving. has been opened to discuss some possible approaches to this. The goal of this issue is to create a documentation page in the handbook that outlines the process someone wanting to do major refactoring to Drupal core should go through. Let's discuss strategies and come up with a plan.

Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative status update video, sprint from Sept 14th

Its been a long time since a discussion or status update was posted for the Drupal 8 Multilingual Initiative, the main reason being that we've been all busy with mapping out the main issues on and working on some of them to move forward. Drupalcon London was great in this sense, lots of new contributors came in and seen that there are countless ways to get involved and help. We've discussed and wireframed usability changes, proposed several API cleanup patches and worked on localization update module integration pre-requisites.

Do you use any of these modules?

The core team is trying to reduce its workload. Every small step helps and so we are considering removing a few modules: blog, dashboard, parts of statistics and trigger. If you have an interest in helping maintaining them, please speak up in the respective issues.

Core office hours start this week

Drupal core needs more eyes and more contributors to decrease the very high amount of unresolved issues.

We're going to hold the first core "office hours" this week in #drupal-contribute on freenode:

Depending on how this goes, we may continue these slots weekly (with a break for DrupalCon).

After a good start last week, we'll continue office hours this Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th August.
