Changes to Drupal 8 that affect admin theme maintainers

Happy Friday! I maintain the admin theme in Drupal 8 core: Seven. There have been many changes to Seven in Drupal 8 that affect the relationship between admin themes and modules, and how the admin UI is generated.

I've always thought that the strategy we've put in place are going to have a positive impact on maintainers of contrib admin themes, but I've never sought out feedback directly. I am now!

The objectives of the Style Guide are:

  • Identify Drupal core values that we can use to determine the look & feel for the Seven theme.
  • Unify the visual language in Seven and ensure the overall look-and-feel supports the core values.
  • Identify the visual and UI patterns used by Drupal core so that they form a conscious, shared language for us to built upon.

All New CSS coding standards up for discussion!

Over 4 years ago, Alan Burke noticed that Drupal didn't have any CSS coding standards. He asked the documentation team lead at the time, Addison Berry, for advice and she suggested that if they wrote the first draft of the CSS coding standards, that would get the ball rolling on discussing them. The goal being to write, iterate and come to consensus on Drupal’s coding standards. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/14421 for the original discussion.

Unfortunately, its 4 years later and the CSS coding standards are still marked “Draft”. http://drupal.org/node/302199

Why is this so difficult? How to display a menu in a template file?

Is someone willing to make a definitive writeup of this? If you want to sit down and work together on this just let me know, and I'll help where I can.

I see so many parts of code snippets, and comments that it worked as well as comments that it didn't work, that I can't make heads or tails out of how it is supposed to be done.

Please if you post something try to be as clear and complete as possible so that people can understand, or maybe it is just me?

From what I gather:
