Full time

Joyful for JS? Singing the praises of Sass? Gung-ho for Gulp? If so, we want you to join our team of talented frontend developers who thrive creating mobile-friendly web experiences. We don’t put up walls — UX designers, frontend and backend developers are all in close collaboration to design and build modern websites and web applications. We’re thought leaders always looking to improve our processes and tools, so come ready to learn and teach others.

  • Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to implement the visual design and user interactions for websites and web apps.
  • We work with content management systems (primarily Drupal), so you will usually be working within a templating framework or theming system.
  • Implementing designs using a mobile-first approach to create pleasant, performant experiences on smartphones, tablets, and desktops.
  • Leveraging frontend style guides and pattern libraries.
  • Engineering first class user interactions using modern JavaScript best practices and frameworks.
  • Ensuring good user experience design in all work you produce.

  • Open vacation policy.
  • $2,000-$3,000 annual professional development and education budget. This can be spent on conferences, seminars, classes — anything that advances your professional goals.
  • Flexible scheduling and telecommuting.
  • 50% paid medical insurance.
  • An excellent work environment filled with smart, funny people who love what they do.

  • Passion for writing fast and maintainable custom HTML, CSS and JavaScript while ensuring frontend performance best practices.
  • Experience implementing web designs within branded style guidelines.
  • Experience implementing rich Javascript interactions in collaboration with designers and backend developers.
  • Professional, yet personable demeanor. You must be able to represent yourself and Four Kitchens to our clients, other members of your team, and to open-source communities at large.
  • Enthusiasm for open-source philosophy and community involvement.
  • Intellectual curiosity and passion for making really cool stuff for the web.

  • Experience designing, theming, or developing for Drupal.
  • Experience working with and producing interactive prototypes.
  • Experience building asynchronous Javascript applications.
  • Experience with Node.js
  • Experience working with frontend development tools, such as Sass, Bower, Grunt, and/or Gulp.
  • Experience with the “mobile-first” approach to frontend development.
  • Experience working with large website projects.
  • Knowledge of best practices to optimize frontend performance.
  • Previous work on open-source projects and adhering to coding standards.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher. (Why preferred rather than required? Experience and passion are more important, and being a constant self-educator is essential.)

About Four Kitchens

(tl;dr: We design and build complex websites, we’re doing lots of forward-thinking stuff in the publishing and mobile web spaces, and we contribute tons of code to open-source projects.)

Four Kitchens is a leading open-source consulting firm with strong roots in the Drupal, open-source, and free-culture communities. We do everything in-house: design, information and systems architecture, usability testing, development, performance tuning, and project management.

We are proud of our clients: major media outlets, universities, non-profits, and social reformers. Our projects are mostly large-scale, and they require extensive client collaboration and occasional on-site work.

Though we handle (very) big projects, we're small enough that our team members go by names, not numbers. Our Web Chefs bring much more than their professional skills to the kitchen, and we encourage everyone to help guide the direction of our company.

We’re a distributed company, meaning we believe good talent is where you find it. Our headquarters is in Austin, Texas — but the Web Chefs span nine time zones and two continents. We strive to make physical distances irrelevant and have all team members feel like they’re working together in the same room.

We work hard and we strive to maintain a good work-life balance for our employees. Our Web Chefs' hobbies include cycling, rock climbing, sketch comedy, yoga, writing, and home brewing. We also actively participate in various charities, community meetups, and volunteer activities.

We hope you’ll join us!
