The Marketing of Drupal

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

This group is a central place for the Drupal Association Branding and Marketing Committee activities and is open for anyone interested to participate. Read more about our focus, goals, and purpose in our charter.

Our work is organized into the major areas listed below. We use this group for discussions and issue queues on drupal.org for tracking individual tasks. Join us and let's help Drupal dominate the world!

Projects

The purpose of undertaking the branding of Drupal is to accelerate the adoption of Drupal. In order to achieve this, we are focusing on the following areas:

  • Mission - Promoting the Drupal project to the public at large with particular focus on non-Drupal developers, CMOs, IT decision-makers and other project owners
  • Branding - Coordinating efforts around the brand, logo, and other collateral
  • Research - Ongoing marketing and competitive research
  • Ideas - Ideas and opportunities
  • Infrastructure - Organizational aspects of the Branding and Marketing Committee
  • Supporting Events

A full description of the goals and detailed breakdown of associated tasks can be found on the Drupal Association Marketing and Branding Committee Charter.

Please help with marketing-related issue queues, here's a couple I've just done.

Hi,

Part of our mission is to help with current issues. Last week I sent out a mail to the group - thanks to all who took a look, I realise the issue queues can be a bit scary for the first look.

I was lucky enough on Sunday during our Brighton DrupalCamp to have Terry who helps out on the case studies queue come down and walk me through the process. The case studies queue seems to be ok at the moment according to Terry, but others like marketplace and training have issues which have been sitting there for ages and need looking at.

Some thoughts on the process

I have been tracking the conversations in here. It's good to see things are moving on this front. From reading the discussions so far, these are my thoughts on the process I see:

Time-boxing is good, closing comments is not.

Especially after only an handful of comments and only a couple of days. There's Drupal people in all of the timezones all over the world. Give things a bit more time. Why close comments at all, why not be clear on where you are in the process without shutting down avenues for further discussion?

Leave room for the discussion to evolve

Support travellers?

To remove any doubt: I mean "Support" as in "provide the facilities to connect" - not as in "give money".

Let's explore the thought.. It's great that we have facilities in place to discuss ideas through forums, though we miss out on the personal connection that are also possible and necessary. And as it was mentioned in another thread, international DrupalCon's can only happen a certain places at certain times... What happens between the con's?

Many Drupalists travel extensively,
some travel because of their work,
some travel as a lifestyle.

Help debug broken pagination links on "The Marketing of Drupal" group

The pagination links at the bottom of this group are broken. However, pagination is not broken for other groups on GDO. This is preventing people from getting a historical perspective of the marketing efforts by the Drupal community over the last several years.

I suspect this has to do with the home page. If you are interested in helping to debug this issue I can elevate your permissions in the group to do so.

Thanks,
Kieran

Make Drupal easy

Capturing the idea from this comment:

http://groups.drupal.org/node/251648#comment-811263

What are the best practices for delivering a website in Drupal that is easy and elegant for content creators? How would we give users a happy WordPress editor feeling? What is the best method for showing only the things they need on the admin screens? On the node edit form?

Please post your suggestions in the comments and we'll work on a proposal.

Drupal evangelism outreach to increase motivation

I've just caught up on the closed thread, and svenryan's call for more fun learning materials. I answered his post, but one thing keeps bugging me.

Developers need to be motivated to learn Drupal. With motivation, they seem able to learn anything.

Training is not the way to grow the talent pool. Training is a way to improve the skills of individuals who have chosen Drupal, or help entire teams convert to Drupal after management has made the choice to move to Drupal.

Make Drupal introductory/training material more fun and engaging

This is an idea and reflection after trying out the Hello Drupal material from Acquia for a group of students.

While I think Hello Drupal is a marvelous and professional piece of work, nicely laid out, with a great compendium that covers the drupal basics in an excellent way, I found it very technical and less engaging.

Material that teaches an entirely new concept needs more of a "fun" factor. This might go hand in had with the typical notion that it's sometimes really hard to do something quite simple with drupal (which i think was pointed out in the closed thread).

What is it that Drupal does so well?

What is it that Drupal does so well? How are we better than any other similar product?

What are the awesome things we can say about Drupal that nobody else can say about their CMS?

NOTES: This is a step in a planned Branding exercise that is outlined here:
Brand Strategy Purpose and Workflow

We are basing this entire thread on this simple idea: The purpose of undertaking the branding of Drupal is to accelerate the adoption of Drupal.

Who are our "mindset" competitors that we need to overcome?

Who are our "mindset" competitors that we need to overcome? (For example, "I think Drupal has a steep learning curve.")

Don't try to narrow it down to a single big one. Let's ger them all ou on the table.

NOTE: If ou agree with someone, simply +1 their comment. Don't feel the need to add your own story if it is largely the same as what has been shared.

Who are Drupal's competitors and what do they do particularly well?

I've done some basic research on this topic. Please contact me directly if you would like for me to share the Google doc with you. This is very hush, hush!

But, the discussion here should center around who are the competitors and what do they do really well?
How do they position themselves in the market?

Who is Drupal's target group? What are their demographics? Psychographics?

Which begs the question: Adoption by who?

Group Home Page Layout

I'd like to gather thoughts for what you'd all like to see on the homepage of this group so do please let me know. The Drupal 8 mobile initiative has a good looking front page, I just went there as catching up on DrupalCon videos and webchick mentioned mobile initiative would like some help on the UI and I'd like to direct some people to the info and it made me think ours is still bare - but early days!

Feel free to post ideas/links/etc., I have some other stuff to attend to, and I understand many are away this weekend so thought I'd get the ball rolling.

The Marketing of Drupal Group Redesign v1.0 Released!

Well, not an official version but now thanks to lots more help from tvn which ended in me updating a bit of documentation on how to customise group pages as it was out of date - http://drupal.org/node/1187094

Have a look around the tabs and click on the quick links, this is the best I can do for a start. There may be a way to get latest issues automatically listed, we're looking into it.

Defining the PURPOSE of Drupal Branding efforts.

I'm starting a fresh thread to discuss just the PURPOSE section that Ben laid out in his earlier post Brand Strategy Purpose & Workflow

Ben asked us to Define our purpose. He provided a template:

PURPOSE:
First, let's define our purpose: We are working on the Branding of Drupal so that we can _____________ Drupal faster than it is _______________ing now.

Is that grow/grow? Is that why we are branding Drupal? Are we happy with faster growth or is there some other higher purpose that we are called to? It could be helping people, turning a profit, expanding the web, mobile, what? Why are we doing this?

Brand Strategy Purpose & Workflow

I would like to propose a workflow for the brand strategy. While I don't want to get bogged down in "talk talk talk" and never do, it's helpful to have a process and a framework of what needs to be done so that it is useful and long-lived. Let's spend a few hours figuring out the direction Drupal should be moving first, then put the pedal down.

Here's the way I have done this in the past:

PURPOSE:
First, let's define our purpose: We are working on the Branding of Drupal so that we can _____________ Drupal faster than it is _______________ing now.
