Welcome
Welcome to the Drupal churches group. This is a group centered around building Church websites with Drupal and a point for members of The Church to go out into the Drupal community. In this group we discuss how to use Drupal, modules to use, integrating other services with Drupal, and the ins and outs of building Church websites.
The Drupal church community extends beyond this group. You can find more information and help in the IRC channel #drupal-churches on irc.freenode.org and on the Geeks and God podcast website.
How to convert posts from Blog Module to "Blog" Custom Content Type?
I've heard on several occasions, including responses to my last post on How to Segment Blog Personas, the recommendation to NOT use the core blog module, but instead to use CCK and Views to replicate the blog module functionality. This makes perfect sense, and I'm doing that going forward.
But what about a site that already has a bunch of blog posts using the core blog module? Has anyone successfully converted a bunch of existing blog posts from the Blog module to custom content types? Can anyone share step-by-step instructions?

Read moreUsing Drupal for a Church Directory
I'm trying to use Drupal V6 to create an online directory (user list) of church members with pictures, contact info, interests, etc. Membership security access is required to view this info. This is pretty easy when I've got an email address to go with each member. But I'd like to include those in the listing that aren't on the net, for the benefit of the other members. Has anyone dealt with this issue, and how did you solve it? The problem revolves around Drupal requiring a unique email address for all users.

This site was designed with Drupal 6 and used some pretty basic modules. In addition to the core modules some of the front-end modules used were Views, Date, CCK, PathAuto, Menu Breadcrumb, Search 404, Menu Block. Some of the back-end/admin modules used were Admin menu(FTW! I love This), Vertical Tabs, Menu Settings Per Content Type, TinyTinyMCE, IMCE, Draggable Views, Image API, Image Crop, Better Formats. For enhanced SEO/tracking we used XML Sitemaps, Sitemaps, Google Analytics.

Read moreKnow of a good write-up on "Why Churches Should Use Open Source?"
I feel like I'm regularly finding myself needing to persuade churches on the benefits of using open source software (yes, most often Drupal but also OpenOffice and other programs). I always feel like I could have done a better job.
It would be great to have a well written short paragraph with perhaps links to one or more longer papers.
Who has this already? Should we create this?

I've changed churches and the church we joined was in the midst of a transition to a new web site platform and I helped them finish the move to Drupal. Here's the site:
The design is by the music pastor's wife and the functionality is still a work in progress, but quite an improvement over the previous static site.

Discuss this wiki here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/19770Goals
Our goal is to create the best event registration system available.
- Simple for the end user to register for an event
- Simple for the admin to create an event. Use Case: The church secretary should be able to do it.
The goal of this document is to gather, organize, and clearly express the needs that churches (and others) have regarding event registration.

Read moreQuick and dirty Authorize.net donations
I had to add an online donation page to our website recently, and didn't have a lot of time to do it. Instead of trying to learn Ubercart, I thought I would just write the bare minimum that we needed to get going. I had some experience with authorize.net from a project a I did about 6 years ago, and thought what we wanted would be very simple. Alas, Authorize.net had changed things around a bit and my solution didn't turn out quite as nice as I had hoped (It takes 2 pages before you get to Authorize.net).
Read moreDrupal Church Feature Sets
It seems the variety of options to create some sort of distro or feature set or pattern or template or whatever are broad, but one thing that is united under all of them is the need to collect a list of what sort of features should be included in this. So what features do you think every or most church websites should have. Let's stay away from modules, how it would be accomplished.
This is a question about defining the problem. We can figure out how to solve it later.

So, I made it to the last few minutes of the Churches and Ubercart BoF at Drupalcon DC and may not have the full picture on what was discussed. As such, I'm going to use this thread to just spec. out what I see as the desired solution for enabling church websites (and other non-profit organizations) to take donations online. It seemed like the folks in the BoF were willing to get behind a proposal, fund it, and start implementing it on their various sites.

With the recent couple of posts regarding Churches using Drupal (and with sessions/BOF times at DrupalCon DC), everybody might be interested in the recent surveys & results (http://www.goodmanson.com/2009-03/04/the-truth-about-church-websites-and...) a San Diego company (http://www.monkdevelopment.com) has recently done regarding Churches and their use of websites. While it's not specific to Drupal, it's still helpful for those doing websites in the contexts of churches.

There was some talk a while back that MFer got started about finding a direction or purpose for the groups.drupal.org/churches group.
I'd like to propose a new initiative for the group: to mobilize churches that use Drupal in order to improve Drupal for churches. At the same time we would be able to contribute these improvements back to the Drupal community. g.d.o/churches could organize and server as a hub for those efforts.
Here's what I'm thinking.
