Co-working in DC?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
BrockBoland's picture

I've been waiting for someone else to post about this, but that's no way to get anything done, so:

Is anyone else in the DC metro area interested in doing Drupal co-working days? I know I'm not the only one around here that works from home.

I think that the first thing we need to do is gauge interest and get a ballpark number of people who might attend, so that we can then find a suitable space for us. To that end, go ahead and comment here if you're into it, even if you just say +1.

I've been half-assedly

I've been half-assedly looking for office space for a while, but when it's an office of one, the pickings are slim or pricey. Yeah, I'm in. I'd be "commuting" from Dulles Town Center.

for those of you in northern virginia or montgomery county, I'd be happy to put you in touch with the VP of the office suites I rent from. They've been good to me.

Works for me. They also have simple identify packages that include set number of hours of conference room or temp office.

Do you mean like a one

jemond's picture

Do you mean like a one time/once a month event kind of thing? I would definitely be interested, and I have a nice space at 7th and E where I should be able to host something like this.

More or less

BrockBoland's picture

I thought we might be able to do something every month or two.

I'd definitely be interested too - I work out around 19/L and we have some office space we might be able to share periodically. But it would be great to co-work once every month or so.

I might have some space available as well...

We have a second location that might be available for this sort of thing. I'm looking into it, and I'll report back once I know what the deal is.

Space Hosting

Hey Guys -

The Web Development Group has an awesome, light-filled office space across from the Potomac River in Old Town, Alexandria - just a block from the Old Town Trolley's last stop on King and S. Union Streets. We have plenty of space to share with other Drupaloos who would like to share their energy and ideas once or twice a month. We're a very enthusiastic group of Developers and love to mingle with others in the Drupal community. Arcade machine with 5k+ games and office dogs included!

Let us know how we can be a part of the co-space group!

Thanks for the interest!

Glad to see the interest!

If you'd like to be a part of this, feel free to let me know, either by replying to this comment or shooting me an email at hemam@wdg.nu ! I know our team loves new faces and fresh ideas, so we would love to start a monthly/bi-weekly spacesharing event as soon as possible!

PS - There's also a wraparound deck with space to work and a grill :). We make sure we enjoy what we do and where we do it!

I'm not in DC but I could refer contract and perm job leads. I frequently get contacted about work in DC by recruiters and I don't want to leave NYC. You can contact me through my d.o. profile if you want me to forward you some leads.

I'm in Maryland

I'm interested in a possible

David_Rothstein's picture

I'm interested in a possible co-working day (now that I just moved to the DC metro area). I'm living in Maryland.

Do we have a date?

schiavone's picture

Let's get something scheduled.

Definitely interested

cm1967's picture

I just moved to the Lakeridge, VA area from Indianapolis. Working from home is great but it gets a bit old after a while. Would love to work with some like-minded folks.

Anybody want to take the lead on this?

BrockBoland's picture

Clearly, there's a lot of interest in co-working, but I'm trying to stop taking on new projects here. Is anyone else interested in organizing this? Here, I'll even put together a todo list for you:

Step 1: Find space
As with sprints, we probably need chairs and tables for 20 or more people, plus reliable wireless for that many people.

Here are the people who offered to help with space:

  • kholmes123: rents an office suite, can put us in touch with VP (might cost money to rent?)
  • Justin Emond: potential space at 7th & E
  • sschafft: potential space at 19th & L
  • Steve Strong: suspicious "second location" might be available
  • homiewdg: space in Old Town Alexandria, with a dog!

Proximity to a Metro station isn't vital, but definitely in high demand.

Step 2: Pick a date
MediaCurrent proposed doing the last Friday of the month, but really, any Friday would do.

Step 3: Announce and publicize it
Post an event here on g.d.o, and put something up on the Meetup.com group for the sake of those who don't know about g.d.o. Depending on how much space is actually available, we may not want to post it on Meetup.com or publicize it on Twitter too much

So. Who wants to take charge? Don't be shy, you're totally qualified, I promise.

Raised hand

schiavone's picture

I can help coordinate this. I'll need some assistance from local DC peeps but that seems to be in abundance on the group

Interested in participating

Someone from our studio would be interested, especially if it's Alexandria with a dog!

Time to start scheduling Drupal co-working days

schiavone's picture

Every month I'd like to schedule one co-working day in DC and one in Baltimore. To simplify things let's do 2nd Fridays in Baltimore and 3rd Fridays in DC. We can always expand if this gets popular. That makes the schedule...

October 12 - Baltimore (location TBA)
October 19 - DC (location TBA)

I'm working on scheduling the Baltimore session at a co-working space here in Baltimore. We've had several offers to host in the DC area in this thread. If you can host the DC group on October 19th please reply. If I don't hear form anyone I'll contact a few co-working spaces in DC. I envision us exploring different locations over time.

Here are the responsibilities of the host...

  • Provide proper work space
  • Make sure there's sufficient bandwidth and access to electrical outlets
  • Help the group find their way to the space (directions, how get in)

I can be reached at daniel at snakehill.net

Co-working of 1

schiavone's picture

If any Baltimore folks are around I'm working out of http://beehivebaltimore.org in Canton. I'm trying to scheduling future co-working here. There's plenty of space and you're more than welcome to plug in.

We still don't have a space for DC next Friday. If you know of a space or would like to host let me know.

First scheduled coworking day

schiavone's picture

Finally, got a co-working day on the docket here in Baltimore. http://groups.drupal.org/node/263983 We're still working on a Washington, DC location. Please let me know if you can host or put me in touch with a DC co-working space.

Recently went to canvas.co...

Really liked my day at canvas.co, might be an option?

1st Baltimore/DC Co-working Day

schiavone's picture

Our first co-working day at www.beehivebaltimore.com went well today. We're confirming NoVa co-working session on Friday 11/16 and I'm heading down to canvas.co on Monday to book us in DC proper.

Look for confirmed dates in the Washington and Baltimore Groups.

Co-working in DC proper

schiavone's picture

Just struck out at canvas.co they can't let us have their conference room for a whole day. Does anyone know of a bar or restaurant in downtown DC we might hold a co-working event?

I heard real estate was at a premium in DC but boy... ;-)
