As I'm sure most of you know, Drupal 8.0.0 was released a few weeks ago (and 8.0.1 has already followed). There was much rejoicing, after several years of development!
On a slightly shorter time scale, around the end of June, the Drupal community (especially documentation folks) started working on making a User Guide for Drupal 8, and now seems to be a great time to get it finished. The project has made considerable progress: we have defined what topics need to be written, and first drafts of 53 of the 99 topics have been written, with another 14 or so in progress.
But there is more to do, and we need your help to get the User Guide done!
Individual Writers and Editors
Individual writers and editors can contribute to the User Guide effort by either writing a topic or editing someone else's writing. A single topic is about a page long, so it's not a huge project to write one, and all you need is the ability to write coherently in English and some basic Drupal skills. You can pick a topic to write in your area of expertise, or stretch yourself by picking something you know less about, and use the topic writing as a learning exercise. To get started, check out the contributor guide (login: drupal/drupal), which will guide you in picking a topic to work on. There are also several editing projects ready to go, and there will be more going forward.
The rewards: you'll get your name (and your company's name and URL, if you wish) in the Attributions list of the User Guide, and earn the gratitude of all the readers. Plus, you'll have the satisfaction of having contributed to something the Drupal project has long needed.
Conference and Sprint Organizers
If you're organizing a conference with a sprint day, a local meetup for the Drupal Global Sprint Weekend in January, or another type of sprint, you may be trying to figure out how to provide all your attendees with something useful to do. I'd just like to point out that writing topics for the User Guide is a great way to involve non-programmers in contributing to the Drupal project.
If you're interested in hosting a User Guide sprint, check out the contributor guide link in the previous section for details on what this type of contributing entails. There are generic guides to hosting sprints available on Drupal.org too -- see https://www.drupal.org/node/1503220
Also, several members of the Documentation group have organized User Guide sprints at conferences over the past few months, so if you have questions about how to have a successful sprint, feel free to post them as comments here.
Let's get this Guide done!

Problem with certificates?
There maybe a problem with the certificates on devdrupal.org.
So for the guide and the guidelines you get the error message below:
https://userguide-drupal.redesign.devdrupal.org/d8guide/en/index.html
https://userguide-drupal.redesign.devdrupal.org/guidelines/instructions....
I don't get that error...
I'm not getting that error, but probably some time ago I told my browser to "connect anyway". We should bring that to the attention of the infra team.

Also got the errror
Connected anyway, recklessly ignoring the warning. After doing so, Chrome did not repeat the message when revisiting the page.

The new cert uses our updated path, *.dev.devdrupal.org. redesign.devdrupal.org still works, but as you noticed the cert is invalid.
https://userguide-drupal.dev.devdrupal.org/d8guide/en/index.html shouldn't give an error.
Fixing URLs
Ah thanks! I will fix the URL links in this post and on the User Guide project page.

Actually that URL gives me a 403/forbidden error....

Clarification
I got clarification from basic -- that new URL is not valid actually. But we will probably migrate the site over to the new URL in the next day or two.

re: user guide
I'll help in the coming weeks during the holidays. Also we have the NYCDrupalCamp on Feb. 27th where we'll be doing some sprint work so if this is still (gulp) getting worked on by that time we'll enlist people in advance to work on the guide then.

New URL
It turned out that the dev site we've been using for the User Guide was on the "obsolete, should be deleted" list of our wonderful Drupal.org Infrastructure team. Oops! Turns out that they've moved to a new server and want to get rid of the old sites.
So, we've migrated it to a new site. The contributor guide is now at:
https://userguide_new-drupal.dev.devdrupal.org/guidelines/instructions.h...
and the in-progress guide can be viewed at
https://userguide_new-drupal.dev.devdrupal.org/d8guide/en/index.html
I've updated links in this post and elsewhere... update your bookmarks! The old site is NOT being updated with new edits and topics, and will be going away soon.

Re: New URL
Both links don't seem to be working for me.
Login information
You need to log in with user name drupal and password drupal in the pop-up windows.
Sorry, I often forget to say that... It does say it in the pop-up window but no one ever notices that. ;)

Reg: Login information
Get thrown straight to a 'server not found' page. The URL: https://userguide_new-drupal.dev.devdrupal.org/d8guide/en/index.html does seem off too.
This may be just me, so you should probably wait for someone else to complain before doing something about it!
Working for me...
It's definitely working for me... sorry it is not working for you, but maybe someone else will confirm working or not working, and if it's not working for a bunch of people we can try to do something about it? Hmmm...

Worked for me too
krishnan.n (I love your login name):
I tested on updated versions of Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and IE Edge via Windows 10. Out of interest, I tried it via Chrome-by-phone-Android too.
Try clearing your cache and retrying, there might be cached information that is disrupting your access to the server. If you killed the login-box by accident via the Esc key, it might have saved your 'decision' (depending on the browser).

Hi,
Worked first try on the office WS; will see what the issue is with the *BSD box at home.

Indeed, Drupal 8 has an easier to use interface.
Looks great!
The new Drupal looks way better than the old. Good job guys. I will check if it can work with me website. Is the userguide done yet?
Close!
The User Guide is not quite done yet. We are close to having a full first draft with all the topics written... then it will need some editing and some work on the images/screen shots. But it is getting pretty close.

Any progress on the documentation? This URL is still broken (getting a 404 error):

Guide has been Deployed
@derekgilmore - The Drupal 8 User's Guide has been fully deployed on drupal.org for a couple of months.
The Project Page for the User Guide was updated with the following when it went live:
The current version of the User Guide can be viewed at: https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide/en/index.html
Might have missed the email notification sent out.
