Community products usable out of the box : How is Drupal able to "compete"?
BrainStorming session Monday 3:00 to 4:00 pm Copenhagen time, Register at http://groups.drupal.org/node/88459)
Drupal has now at least two community products usable out of the box. http://commons.acquia.com & http://openatrium.com
(Edit 20100822) http://drupal.org/project/voicebox targeting targets community media
+ facebook like feature http://sndemo.dev3.webenabled.net/node/1
There is a need to see how those projects compare and are able to "compete" with non-Drupal products.
The output of this brainstorming session could be a list of features based on a competition analysis focused on the most successful of each targeted audience :
-With enterprises in mind we could focus on http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/ & in SaaS mode http://www.jivesoftware.com
-With a general audience in mind http://buddypress.org or in SaaS mode http://ning.com.
That way we may be able to coordinate our efforts and see what our weaknesses and strengths are.
This opening informal session is meand to complement the sessions of the official shedule :

There are lot of participants who could give a valuable input outside of the conference. We will use Ustream and I schedule it at 3PM European time / 9AM in the US.

Soon to be a third
Our KDI work (called VoiceBox) is nearing completion - it provides another way for a community to get started working and communicating with and among their stakeholders.
The initial writeup of our proposal is here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/11585
A pre-alpha version is live (supporting a community of teachers and students writing about issues related to the Gulf oil spill) at http://voicesonthegulf.org
As part of this build, we worked to make our base features as reusable and extensible as possible; this process is described here: http://funnymonkey.com/building-features-for-install-profiles
This video shows some of the functionality available to end users: http://vimeo.com/13716311
We're finishing up final testing on our features and the accompanying install profile, and are looking to make an official release within the next couple weeks.

Great looking project. It seems very usable evidenced by people using it! Did your users contribute ideas as to how it should be structured?
Again, great job.
Not for the initial pass
For the initial pass, we built out functionality/an IA based on building similar sites over the last few years - so, we used feedback we had gathered/observed, and then built this site based on those observations (as well as things we all look for when we are using sites).
This was one of our driving factors in making the features for it as modular as possible; not everyone will want all of the exact functionality we built, or they might want to solve similar issues in different ways. So we wanted to make a base install that was feature rich and just worked, while allowing more technical/motivated users to use what they wanted as a base and discard the rest.
