Neil Drumm (drumm) and I have been working lately on the API module (used to build API documnentation sites like https://api.drupal.org and others). We've made a 7.x-2.x branch of the project, which works quite differently from the 7.x-1.x branch. The major changes are that it uses a different (and external) parsing library for parsing PHP files, and it uses Composer to manage its external library dependencies.

One of the important challenges facing the effort to improve Drupal as tech comm tool is getting the right user experience for authors especially when we start adding things like conditional text, single-sourced content and DITA-style mapping.

I was tweeting @drupaldocs yesterday, which is now leading to me posting here. Observe:

Me: @drupaldocs Can you recommend any tools/browser plugins/etc. for quicker/easier editing of docs? Maybe outliners, and so on? #drupal

Site Builder Tasks

I recently got the opportunity to work on an idea that I've had for a few weeks – some kind of automized technical documentation of Drupal sites. It resulted in a rudimentary but working module Documentation Robot, collecting some technical information about the site where it is installed and summarizing it on a page.

It currently collects information about node types (including CCK fields), installed modules/projects, and user roles. In the pipe is also support for documenting views, panels, better CCK field documentation, and a tonne of other ideas I got. I also want to make the collected information re-usable in a number of different formats (for example DITA or creation of book nodes), but that is further off in the future.
