Documents storage format
Hi,
I need to put together a solution to store health documents for the company I work with. Drupal is the platform, but I am not sure in what format should I store the documents. Documents will be viewed from the web (remotely), but also locally in the office.
Real life situation:
- I might be ask to put together all the documents for a patient for the last 4 years and this might be around 10K documents and the size of all of them around 600MB in PDF at 300 dpi.
Secure Document Management solution - the filedepot module
The filedepot module is a feature rich application for managing and sharing files securely across your organization or user community. The module is easy to install as it only requires the base CCK and filefield modules. The filedepot module has been developed to provide the user with an easy to use functions to search, download, edit and add documents. The user interface has been developed with design cues from Google Docs and makes extensive use of modern web application technologies to behave like a desktop application.

Hello together,
Drupal(wiki) is now officially listed on the wiki-comparision page #1 : www.wikimatrix.org
We are happy to announce the successful implementation of Drupal as Wiki in the Drupal Wiki project. It is build on vanilla Drupal 6 and creates a new level of integration of Wikis or even more precise, for Drupal in Intranet-Applications.

From my experience, there are a few major things lacking in Drupal. One of them that I have encountered a lot is the ability - or inability to manage files/documents effectively. I'd like to start laying the groundwork for a comprehensive file (or at least document) manager that allows some of the more popular feature requests e.g check in/check out, protected files & directories etc.

I've made two alfa releases of the module, more on the way. The module is still in alfa for three main reasons:
- would love more feedback
- more features need to be implemented
- there are known bugs affecting installation edge cases
Currently implemented features
- Directories - implemented based on taxonomy
Modules for DMS
After reading Hariska2@drupal.org's comment about creating a rudimentary DMS module, I was thinking about wanting just such a thing. (It is part of the reason for establishing this group.)
However, much of the functionality already exists. I want to make sure that if I aid in the creation of a new module for document management that that module doesn't totally overlap existing functionality to much. However, there are some pretty significant improvements that I think could be made. I will commence with suggesting the things that already exist and then consider what is missing.

Now that the group is out of moderation I feel comfortable announcing this group. Drupal is not and does not provide a document management system (DMS). However, by creatively assembling a few modules it is possible to provide a limited amount of functionality. I've created this group to discuss strategies for managing documents in Drupal.
