Event type:
Drupalcamp or Regional Summit

Last year ROCKED so we've been invited back!

A call for presenters AND attendees AND sponsors!
PLZ reply with your session proposals

The organizers of SouthEast LinuxFest have again asked me to volunteer to organize a FREE one day Drupalcamp to take place on day3 of the SouthEast LinuxFest. http://www.southeastlinuxfest.org/
WHEN: Sunday June 12th
WHERE: Spartanburg Marriott at the Renaissance http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/SPAMC?groupCode=slxslxa&app=resvli...
Spartanburg SC
TRAVEL: The hotel is 10 min away from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) which serves most air lines.
REGISTRATION: Opens soon and will be on www.southeastlinuxfest.org

We will have TWO tracks and we have a FULL DAY to fill up. The response I get from potential presenters and attendees will aid in determining how many tracks we will have. We could do SEVEN like we did last year.

This is a group effort. Chime in and be a part of the 2nd DrupalCamp at S.E.L.F.

If you will attend this event PLZ register on this page as attending so we can keep track here.

That's great news, Doug! I will definitely help out more this year.

I will put together a site for us to use, www.DrupalCampSC.com, and will build it out with the COD distribution http://www.usecod.com

I'll try to get something up in the next couple weeks. Let me know what else I can do.

Do you want to do an all-day session like you did last year? Let's plan to talk by phone or skype some time next week...

take care,
Tom

Update

dougvann's picture

Jason Hibbets has expressed his desire to deliver his "building community the open source way" talk from DrupalCon Chicago. I didn't catch it there so I look forward to catching it here!
Tom has begun the process of building out a COD site to manage our session submissions. If any onw wishes to jump in and help that would be great! The goal of the site is to accept session submissions and make the schedule available. It's not going to be a vey tricked out site at all. And there's no payment processing to deal with!
Who wants to chip in and help develop it? [saying you helped build a camp site is a pretty sweet bragging right!] Use Tom's contact form http://groups.drupal.org/user/16396/contact to let him know you're on board

In the mean time [Doug Cone] and any one else... It would be awesome if you would all reply to the original post on this thread and let us know what sessions you are thinking of doing. I don't want to wait for the COD site to complete before we get the session ball rolling?
As soon as I finish this post I'll go to the opening post and start off by suggesting some ideas I have.

Thank you all!

I can do any of the following for presentations

Silicon.Valet's picture
  • Introduction to module development d6 & d7
  • Introduction to data migration / import strategies
  • Introduction to panels and views

3 down!

dougvann's picture

I say for now that we will run with ALL three of them! :-)
I'll add mine here as well:
1] INTRO TO DRUPAL
2&3] SITE-BUILDING in Drupal7 [this will last 2 sessions long]

I know Jason Hibbets and Doug Cone are good for at least 2 sessions each. So that gives us EIGHT sessions.
Also, if we get more people involved then Jason Smith and I won't be doing three sessions each. [No session hogz allowed!] ;-)

I think we'll close this up by months end!

THANK U ALL!

And now for the bad news.

dougvann's picture

The bad news is that DENVER DrupalCamp is the same weekend as S.E.L.F.
:-(
So this is definitely effecting us already. Palantir.net was looking at sending Ken Rickard and possibly George Demet, but they have notified me that that is no longer a consideration. Ken spoke last year on access rules in Drupal7.
That might be the end of the impact of DenverCamp being the same weekend, we will see.

Any more sessions on this thread? We're going to launch a DrupalCamp SouthCarolina site very soon, but I'd like to see some more sessions suggested here.

Doug,

I will be glad to present on "Hosting Drupal with Aegir".

Let me know if that works.

Thanks!
Mark

You're in dude!

dougvann's picture

That would be an excellent session!
Maybe you could spend about 30minutes on how to pronounce it. Perhaps we could line up in two sides; one side is the EEE-jir side and the other is the AY-jir side. Then we throw things at each other.
But seriously... I'd like to see a really goos session description on this one. I believe that a well written description will appeal to many of the Linux users on site.

Wish I could go, but looks like I will be at DrupalCamp Colorado that weekend :(

WebSite is LIVE : http://www.drupalcampsc.com/

dougvann's picture

Please go to http://www.drupalcampsc.com/ and submit your sessions.
So far, the response here has been mixed. Since we have 2 rooms and at least a total of 12 sessions to fill, I have proposed 3 consecutive intro sessions that are designed to take the uninitiated thru the dangerous sharp turns of Drupal. If we wind up with more sessions being proposed I'd be more than happy to surrender some of my time. This whole idea of doing multiple intro-sessions that build on eachother has served me well in other LinuxFests and many Camps. But if we have sufficient presenters, then I don't want to be a session hog.

Session proposals close at Midnight Sunday April3rd.

We are late in getting this info to the SouthEastLinuxFest people who need to print and promote this data.

If you have expressed interest on this thread then please go to http://www.drupalcampsc.com/ and create your account and submit your session. There's no time for voting and vetting. Unless we get an onslaught of proposals in the next 120hours, then you can pretty much count on your session getting in.

Thank you all!

just submitted a proposal

narayanis's picture

I'd be glad to introduce Drush and Drush Make for site management and site building. I'd call myself intermediate, and this session would be for an audience who knows how to manually put together a site but wants to let the tools do the work so they can focus on the fun bits. I've never presented at a DrupalCamp before, so any pointers would be appreciated.

For other session ideas, I'm well-versed in CiviCRM and the out-of-box usage of Open Atrium (my nonprofit runs both).

I love all 3!

dougvann's picture

We're doing the 50minute sessions again this year. If we fall short of having enough then we might extend those session lengths to fill out the day.
I honestly do love each of your 3 session ideas. I would love to see them all myself. And I'm especially happy that this is your first time presenting! We desperately need to grow the speaking talent out there.
If we do 50min session starting at 9, 10, 11, 1, 2, 3, and 4, then we have 14 sessions to fill up; and we're not quite 1/3 of the way there yet.

What I propose you do is prepare yourself for all three. Don't sweat using lots of slides. I'd make some slides that have some heavy hitting bulleted-points that you want the crowd to take home. Spend most of your time demonstrating and using Drush, OA, and CiviCRM. They need to see the power AND how to get the power out of Drupal for their use or the use of their organizations.

Plop on over to the site and submit all three. If we find by Sunday that we have more than we need, I'll be sacrificing some of mine to make room. If it REALLY gets crowded then I'll maybe have to painfully take off on of yours.

How's that sound?

Nicholai,

And then there were 20!

dougvann's picture

OK.
We currently have 9 unique presenters, 12 slots to fill, and we have 19 proposed sessions.

Thank you to all who rocked it and submitted sessions. There's still time between now and midnight this Sunday.

What i'd like now is to see some people voting on some of these multiple sessions. I love seeing people with 6 sessions and some with 3. We have a LOT of options to chose from!

I went ahead and removed my other 2 sessions and kept only my "What is Drupal" session. I also went ahead and accepted My session, Tsliker's "Distro", Shrop's "Aegir", Tlattimore's "Theming". and Jhibbets' "Online Communities" sessions.

So that's 5 down and 7 to go. If we don't get any more unique presenters then we'll need to double-down and 3 presenters may need to present twice.

Voting will determine which session(s) get in among those who proposed multiple sessions. It's awesome to have so many excellent choices to choose from.

Thank you for voting!

Will voting begin this coming

jacksinn's picture

Will voting begin this coming Monday (4/4)? Also are you trying to have an even number of beginner/intermediate/advanced sessions or would you prefer the sessions to be geared more towards beginners?

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Voting has started.

dougvann's picture

Voting is going on now.
We technically owed this schedule to the LinuxFest organizers some time ago.
What I'm doing is asking the presenters to vote on eachother's sessions now so that we can get a schedule to the LinuxFest team on Monday. I should have stated that in my pevious post on this thread. Thanks for beinging that up.

As for beginner/intermediate/advanced...

What I'm seeing is that we really need three tracks next year. But for now my biggest focus is getting every presenter into at least one session, then seeing what's left and going from there.

Next year we will have to have a dedicated track for beginners, but this year we'll just have a few sessions for them.

A N O T H E R N O T E...
I know I'm taking the ball and running with it, but I'm wide open to input and suggestions. I don't mind undoing anything I've done. Maybe next year we can set up a committee to share the power so that I'm not a benevolent dictator as I have somewhat been for this year's and last year's camp.

We can discuss that at the camp! :-)

I think someone definitely has to take the lead. Appreciate the effort, Doug!

I might be missing something, but I don't see any way to vote on the sessions.

If you are using COD, there's some config to do

Silicon.Valet's picture

Have whoever is doing the site send me an email if they'd like some help. I used COD for swdrupalsummit.com but I had to hybridize it with some other stuff to make it work the way we wanted. There are a few gotchas to the distribution.

where is the actual voting

where is the actual voting taking place?

i'm not seeing anything here: http://www.drupalcampsc.com/program/sessions/proposed or here (this thread)

am i missing something?

is the flag set to a global

jacksinn's picture

is the flag set to a global flag instead of a per user flag? does the flag have authuser perms? exposed in the view/node? i don't see a vote either.

It took me a while to find

caschbre's picture

It took me a while to find it... you have to open the session node to vote on the session.

It might be nice to add the flag option to the proposed sessions view to make voting easier. And possibly add the number of votes?

Good idea, thanks

Silicon.Valet's picture

I'm working on a new roll-out of the site and had implemented it, but I went ahead and tweaked some of the views to add voting to them in the meantime on the "live" site. The new site will have more config changes.

Any other suggestions for usability or desired features?

I didn't enable the number of votes because I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. It shouldn't be used to influence your vote and can leave some sour feelings.

Any word on the accepted

Pre-Release of the Schedule

dougvann's picture

Tom and I are still working om some specifics,
BUT
While we do... I wanted to get some feedback from you all.
If you submitted a session, you should have received at least one session-slot.

We now have THREE rooms!

So many of us now have more than one spot.
Take a look at http://drupalcampsc.com/program/session-schedule/all
N O T E : only users who submitted sessions have access to the above link. Once we nail that down we will show the world! :-)
I'd like feedback on the sessions selected and the layout of the schedule. We had a lot of similar topics proposed but many of them took different paths on the same topic so it seemed fitting to accept what looks like some moderate overlapping topics. I know that Matthew is already catering his session to dovetail nicely with the two other similar sessions.

Check out the schedule, and post your feedback here.

I think it might make sense

erikwebb's picture

I think it might make sense to swap my "Become a Drupal Coding Rockstar" presentation with the "Creating online community the open source way" one. My presentation is probably closer to Advanced and gives a single developer session rather than overlapping coding best practices and Drush/Drush make.

Agreed

I have started a NEW event post at http://groups.drupal.org/node/144194 and announced that the schedule is posted.

Within reason, I'm still open to comments and change-requests on the schedule.
