Test Site Best Practices

I have my production site just about ready to go (Yay!) but, I would like to have a test site for updating modules, etc. Ideally, I would have a completely separate site either hosted or locally to play with, but I have yet to get a local site working well and I don't have the budget to pay for two sites hosted. Bluehost said I could just make a folder called test and move a complete Drupal install there and then my test site would be domainname.com/test. I have some ideas about doing this, but if anyone has done this before, I would love some ideas on how to best accomplish this.

Site Migration FAIL

I'm attempting to migrate my functioning Drupal site from one host to another. I have tried several different methods (importing the database, then loading the files; using their Drupal install and then loading my database; cursing at the computer) and all have given me different error messages that seem to be at the database level. I have changed sites/default/settings.php to reflect the new database information. The error seems to always come from something called the lock.ini file. I've looked around online and talked with the new hosting company for a bit, but have not had any luck.

Google Analytics or something else?

I'm fairly new to Drupal, but have created some sites before. In the past, I typically used Google Analytics to monitor the site traffic and noticed that there is a Google Analytics module, but I was wondering what others thought of it and if there might be a better solution with a Drupal site.

Thanks!

Time to get back on the wagon. Due, in particular, to our recent Building a Powerful Custom Website with Drupal class, we've been way off schedule with our regular meetings. It's time to get started again.

We will start things back up with an informal Drupal meetup Thursday, March 17, 4:00pm at Zootown Brew coffee on Broadway.

Drupal 8 Development Begins — 15 Bugs At a Time

darthcamaro writes
"It took nearly 3 years for the open source Drupal 7 content management system to hit general availability. The plan for pushing out Drupal 8 is to be faster. How are they going to do that? '"At no point in time will there be more than 15 critical bugs," Dries Buytaert, founder of Drupal said. "I will not pull in a big change if we know there are known bugs. This gives us the ability to do timely releases because we know at most the release is only 15 critical bugs away from being ready."'"

Changing the default search box

I'm working with the MAYO theme (http://drupal.org/project/mayo) and it has a nice feature where you can turn on and off a search box in the header through Administrator-Themes-Settings. I'd like to use this search box, but with a different search box (one that searches our library catalog). So, basically, I'm looking for a place to stick the HTML code in the MAYO theme so that that search box becomes my search box. I've looked through the CSS and other files in the theme, but all I see is the layout of the search box, not the actual information for the search box.

I'm not crazy... Date and Views hate each other!

After having my site really messed up (WSOD messed up) twice, I started to look into calendar, dates and views more to see if anyone else is having an issue and I found this http://drupal.org/node/1066690. It looks like they're going to be rebuilding the date module to work better with views (sigh of relief!). Anyone else seeing problems with Date, Views and Calendar in Drupal 7?

Filtering by taxonomy in views

I've been playing around in views for awhile, but I can't seem to filter a view by taxonomy term. Ideally, I'd like to create a view that displays an alphabetical list (it's of hyperlinks) and then let's users change the list by selecting the taxonomy term to narrow the list to just that category (for example: health resources). But, I've also been trying to just create a view using the taxonomy as a filter and then creating links to the different views. I feel like this should be easy to do (maybe if I could write SQL queries, it would be), but I'm not getting anywhere.

Drupal as an Application Framework: Unofficially competing in the BostonPHP Framework Bakeoff

BostonPHP hosted a PHP Framework Bake-Off last night, a competition among four application frameworks: CakePHP, Symfony, Zend, and CodeIgniter. A developer coding in each framework was given 30 minutes to build a simple job-posting app (wireframes publicized the day before) in front of a live audience.

I asked the organizer if I could enter the competition representing Drupal. He replied that Drupal was a Content Management System, not a framework, so it should compete against Wordpress and Joomla, not the above four. My opinion on the matter was and remains as follows:

Drupal 7 Field Type Definitions

opegasus noted that there wasn't a readily-available list of all the core (and contributed?) field types for Drupal 7. Let's make one.

What are they for? i.e. why chose one over the other? How come I have field types like term-reference that aren't listed here?

Site migration/move and overcoming issues changing databases.

Greetings MT Drupaliers!

I found that I had to move my site. I went from a MySqli to a MySql database set up.

Everything (I believe) is the same.

The site will not connect (thelightscriber.com ) and shows it offline and that I am facing DB issues.

I did change the settings file in the DB line but that was it. Still a no-go.

I have searched but most threads say to just change the one line in Settings. Did that but still epic fail.

Come chat with group members in our local IRC channel

Hi Montana Drupalistas!

IRC is a venerable Internet protocol for real-time text-based communications. Essentially, chatrooms. Ages before Skype, AIM, etc people were using IRC to chat about thousands of topics, and IRC remains very popular today, especially among geeks.

I have created an IRC channel for the use of our local Montana Programmers group, and I think we should use it for Drupal Montana as well. We can help each other with questions/answers, say hi, and alleviate the isolation of working alone for us home-office folks. It's like a virtual water cooler.

If you already know how to use IRC, just join the #mtprogrammers channel on the Freenode network (irc.freenode.net).

If you need help getting started with IRC, I've provided complete instructions here:
http://www.meetup.com/Montana-Programmers/messages/boards/thread/10053832

If you need any help, just let me know! Hope to see you in the channel…

P.S. The global Drupal community makes heavy use of IRC to stay connected. The Drupal IRC channels are a great way to ask/answer questions, coordinate with Drupal friends in far-flung locales, etc: http://drupal.org/irc

Drupal's double HTML meta print trashes Nodewords.

It's a crying shame that Drupal's core code causes double meta printing in the HTML.

I really wanted to use Nodewords to enhance each node's meta keywords and descriptions for SEO. The validity of being able to specify the exact meta info for each specific node would greatly enhance targeted SEO. due to this error I have to hard code a set of tags for each template. Lost is the ability to SEO a node on the fly.
