Has there been any development on social media functions done with Drupal

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi! My name is Michael Lagrimas, I just joined WIDT! I would like to find out if anyone has any resources, experience on using social media functions using Drupal? I am new to using Drupal and would like to use it to build a website that will use social media functions. Your input, suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Define "social media functions"

Hi Michael - could you define "social media functions"?

There's a great newly updated distribution of Drupal called "Commons" which provides a community site out-of-the-box:

Define "social media functions"

Hi Steve! yes, I am basically looking for features much like some existing social media sites, and past ones. For instance, the "status update" on Facebook, a profile "Bio" of a person, a person's "Favorite" section, their favorite things e.g., songs, movies, places, food, etc. The ability to upload photos, create albums or upload videos, and have a video section or even place a video in the comment section for a relevant topic. Is this all making sense? I would like the functions to achieve these features on a website I'd like to create using Drupal. It will be a Login type website but free. This "commons" that you mentioned, might it offer any of these features? Or maybe a different concept?

Yes, Commons has many of those functions, it's in beta version at the moment but I have it up working nicely over at http://drop.coop. There's not much in the way of media uploads yet, I believe that's being discussed on the issue queue.

You can always build one from scratch if you have specific requirements - check out things like the 'media' module http://drupal.org/project/media.

There's 20,000+ modules for Drupal to build pretty much anything you want, see http://drupal.org/project/modules/categories

There's also more distributions http://drupal.org/project/distributions, for example PushTape which is for musicians http://drupal.org/project/pushtape
