Google Summer of Code 2013

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Notice: We are not using separate group for each year's Summer of code any more. Everything should be happening in https://groups.drupal.org/google-summer-code from now on!

Welcome potential Google Summer of Code 2013 students and mentors!

We are currently still waiting for Google to announce this year's organizations, but it is wise to start collecting project proposals now.

If you already know what you want to do just create a discussion.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers post-secondary student developers ages 18 and older stipends to write code for various open source software projects. We have worked with open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund projects over a three month period. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together over 6000 successful student participants and over 3000 mentors from over 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code. Through Google Summer of Code, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the opportunity for employment in areas related to their academic pursuits. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers. Best of all, more source code is created and released for the use and benefit of all.

This group is for posting and discussing GSoC project ideas, as well as for general conversation that relates to the SoC. You can also get help on the #drupal-contribute IRC channel on freenode (irc://irc.freenode.net/drupal-contribute).

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SUBMIT PROJECT IDEAS OR TO RE-SUBMIT IDEAS FROM LAST YEAR!

Finally, read HOWTO: Write a Summer of Code application.

Drupal Projects in other open source organisations selected for GSoC 13

Hi,
I am posting after a discussion with xjm on #drupal-contribute.

First, I am really sorry and shocked at the same time that Drupal was not selected as a mentoring organisation this year. I am sure Drupal will be back with a bang the next year.

This discussion was to highlight that the student developers who came to the Drupal Forums looking for prospective projects need not be disappointed. There are drupal projects offered by Sigmah and Fedora this year where the student developers can contribute over the summers under the GSoC umbrella.

Statistical analysis on previous GSoCs

Out of morbid curiosity, I started going through previous GSoC years at http://drupal.org/google-summer-of-code and compiling data about students, projects, mentors, and whether or not they're still around.

You can find it here (just 2005 so far):
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AusehVccVSq2dEVrdnRLRlpGZXN...

If anyone else feels the urge to help with this, that'd be awesome! Else I'll probably pick away at it over the next while.

Improvements for the current media/asset-managment modules

Improvements for the or a selected existing "media-/asset-managment"-module.

Current solutions are a good base for small sites but lack some essential features IMO for bigger solutions like e.g. intranet-solutions (e.g. file integration of external files stored on a NAS without a needed upload).

Unfortunately I am no programmer but I can provide support with UI, UX & Workflow-Design/Ideas. I am also Betatester for Adobe and know all current solutions which work very well as desktop apps.

Get BlogAPI for D7 To Functional State

The ability to post to Drupal Blogs from external clients using Blogapi is an valuable feature that was removed from Core in Drupal 6. There is a BlogAPI Contrib Module for Drupal 7 but it is not functional and has not had an updated release in over a year since the current maintainer has not had time to work on it.

Port File entity to D8

File entity (fieldable files) provides interfaces for managing files. It also extends the core file entity, allowing files to be fieldable, grouped into types, viewed (using display modes) and formatted using field formatters. File entity integrates with a number of modules, exposing files to Views, Entity API, Token and more.
