We're excited to announce Exaltation of Larks' next web development mentorship training. This free training is from 12-3pm at Opodz, a new and well-designed collaborative work environment serving Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles, California.

What Will Be Covered?

We'll be using extensive video libraries from both OSTraining.com and Build a Module.com. Our main focus this time is on Drupal, a free and open source web framework used by millions of websites on the web today, and we'll also cover other web applications like WordPress and Joomla, as well as general coding topics such as HTML, PHP, CSS and responsive web design.

What To Bring

Bring your WiFi-capable laptop, your lunch, and learn about web development! If you don't have a pair of headphones, you can buy a pair from the organizers of this event.

Registration

This training is free. Donations to Droplabs, a learning community that provides low- to no-cost training, mentorship and entrepreneurship services, will be accepted ($45 suggested donation) at the event and at http://droplabs.net/donations

Registration is required. Sign up at http://www.larks.la/training

Be sure to arrive early to give yourself enough time to park, pick a seat, and connect your laptop to the venue's WiFi network. We begin promptly at 12pm. Classroom space is limited, so sign up early.

Directions & Parking

   Opodz
   362 East 2nd Street
   Los Angeles, CA 90012

Opodz offers desk space and bandwidth in a well-designed collaborative work environment serving Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles. Their phone number is (213) 207-6879 and their website is at http://www.opodz.com

There is 2-hour street parking for $1.50 an hour. Covered parking is $5 a day in the structure a few doors down from our venue.

What To Expect

Instead of spending the full day in a traditional workshop-style lecture, attendees will work at their own pace through a set of comprehensive, focused training videos covering one or more broad areas of web development, including HTML, CSS, PHP and responsive web design, and frameworks such as Drupal, WordPress and Joomla.

Experienced mentors will be available to answer questions on a one-on-one basis, work through difficult spots, or demonstrate additional examples to help clarify difficult concepts. By using video training instead of a live lecture model, attendees will be able to work at their own speed, pausing where they need to, replaying material they didn't get the first time around, and skip material they're already familiar with.

If you've ever zoned out during a lecture and found yourself a little lost, or been frustrated that the short time available for questions gets taken up with discussion you're not interested in, this web development mentoring event is perfect for you. You can take breaks when you need, tackle exactly what you need to learn (or we'll help you figure out what that is) and you'll get a lot of personal, expert advice along the way.

Attendees of all levels of experience with web development will come out of this workshop having made a huge step up their learning curve. Attendees will also be given discount codes for OSTraining and Build a Module.com so that they can continue to review and expand their knowledge following this mentored training.

My apologies, everyone. This event is on August 9th, not August 6th like the event announcement originally stated.

If you can't wait for this workshop and would like to learn more about Drupal on August 6th, check out the Downtown Drupal Meetup, which is also at Opodz:

Module Development and Advanced Site Building

christefano's picture

Hi all, just a quick update about the mentorship training on Friday, August 9th. While this training is great for those with any level of Drupal skill and experience, our focus this time will be on module development and advanced site building.

Along those lines, this week Build a Module.com released a couple new videos about Views Slideshow, all of which will be available during this mentorship training:

About the "Cycle options" available in Views Slideshow
In this video we start working our way through the extensive settings exposed to use through Views Slideshow. First, we look at settings like transition time and slide duration (and a slew of others). Getting a sense of what's available here will let you make some creative choices down the road.

How the pager and controls widget settings work in Views Slideshow
The next batch of settings we go through have to do with how the pager and control settings work in Views Slideshow. In this video we work through each of the settings so you know exactly what you're looking at.

What we need to do to complete our slideshow view
At this point we have a functional slideshow, but there's still a good bit of work to be done to get it looking right. Here we do an overview of the additional steps we need to take.

Setting up our node display with custom image style for the slideshow
In this video we build up our node display to show as a consistently-sized image and title.

How to add a views filter to show just nodes with images
Not all of our blog entries have images, which makes them look a little bare when the slideshow rolls through them. So here we add a filter to just display nodes that have images associated with them.

Thanks to everyone who came
